Excerpt 1 ~ TRUTH: Spiritual Manual for Battle

Truth: Spiritual Manual for Battleby Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro © 2018

As shared in a recent post, for 3 months in 2017, the Lord had me sit intensely in prayer with Him, listen, and write out a book which had been on my mind and heart since early 2006.  Finally, finally, He was giving me the words to express for you what I believed He had been showing me about Himself and worship. It was and is for military to gain more situational awareness about the invisible, supernatural spiritual battle ongoing around us at all times, but it is also for you–because all of us find ourselves immersed in this spiritual battle.  TRUTH: Spiritual Manual for Battle has been published and is available on amazon.com. However, He has also laid on my heart to publish periodic excerpts here, so you can begin to read a bit (if you so desire).  This post starts the process. PLEASE REMEMBER and respect, that this material is under copyright and is not for use or reproduction in whole or in part in any way without permission. Email address for contact is at the end of the post.

Let’s begin with prayer: LORD GOD, Most High Ruler over all. You desire to be known. And You desire us to understand the principles by which You operate, so that even in the midst of life’s worst, we can experience thriving in You and because of You. Guide us now. Guide each reader. Bring the ones for whom this excerpt is for and speak to them interiorly what information is specifically for each one and move in them to recognize what they are to do with it. You are greater than we can imagine. Help us to gain a greater grasp of You and the over-riding, supernatural spiritual dimension which is around us at work at all times. Help us be cognizant of You as well as the other side and to learn to wield well the sword of Truth which helps us to stand strong in life’s battles and persevere until Your victory. Your ultimate victory is eternal. Your gift: unending life with You. A healing and destiny no evil can steal away. Lead us, Lord. Guide each one specifically into the more You have for Him or her. In Your mighty and precious name, Amen

Excerpt 2 – “Introduction”

There is power (“pow”) with which God promises to respond when we choose to worship Him. Sounds unbelievable, but its true–based on irrefutable principles.  That’s “pow” as in superhero, where you partner with God in your battles for His one-two, knowck-out punch for your adversaries (both visible and invisible.)  Read on and learn what, why and how. If you dare, it could change your life in indescribably positive ways…forever.

What if I were to tell you that there is a wisdom greater and higher than what people have taught you that catapults you into a supernatural realm where true life and purpose are found? There God is waiting to provide His protection, provision and direction for your life now through forever. And it’s better than you think.

This booklet is specifically for deployed military and those who love them. It presents a perspective on your military mission and your life. Please take it or leave it. But before you decide, maybe just read it and see what you think. Throughout, you will come to understand why this Worship Toolkit (gift bag) has been sent to you.

Let’s begin with some background. When I finish, you may have decided I’m just crazy. But I beg you to consider, what if I’m not?

First, even though you don’t know me, I’ve been praying for you and holding you (and those who are important to you) in my heart since the terrorist attacks on NYC and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. It doesn’t matter if you were in the military already then or not. It is irrelevant if you weren’t even born until later. I was and am praying for all those who serve and stand in the miltiary against enemies of all sorts for the rest of us. That includes you. I pray for you when you train, when you serve, if you deploy and after you come home. I pray God would bless you and lead you into all the good He has for you and those you love.

Though this little book is about God, I didn’t always believe in Him. Raised with faith as a child, I went through a ten-year period in my twenties when I wasn’t sure He existed. Life was dark and hopeless. I struggled with depression. I knew I was missing something, but I didn’t know what. One day I finally reached the point I wasn’t sure I wanted to keep living if this was all there was, so I turned toward where I thought God might be and uttered a mental request. “If you’re real, God, could you give me just a little mustard seed sized amount of faith? I’ve heard that’s all I need and it will grow from there. Help me to believe in you.” Well, He answered this prayer very specifically. Step by step it did go forward from there and suffice to say, I now have absolutely no doubts in the existence of God and fully acknowledge that the missing piece to life satisfaction for me indeed was relationship with God. But that is a story for another day. This story is about and for you.

Be forewarned, I’m going to share stuff about God, which includes concepts beyond what may seem comfortable and doesn’t seem to be talked about enough. But I have to be real with you!

One “a-little-out-there” topic is that as I continued to work to learn more about God (to “seek” Him) and He answered, I learned that He does speak to us and promises to teach us to understand Him if we ask and are diligent learners. In the years that followed, He taught me how to recognize His voice. He also encouraged me to practice having the courage to obey what He laid on my heart in interior wispers, especially when initially these requests didn’t seem to make sense.

In autumn 2003…

Decorating My Heart With His Joy

img_4552
Holy Baby, come to set us free. In love descending, in love never-ending Your care for souls from here to eternity.  We are awestruck at Your majesty and how You love and come to rest today and every day in You.

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro © 2016

Outside cold rain pouring down. Certainly in the mountains it is snowing. Unusual rain. Unusual temperatures. Actually a sense of autumn. I love the rain and its coolness and wish it could be thus every year.

Normally in our part of Northern California, October is hot and dry (long after we are ready for autumn rain and cooler temperatures) and November is temperate, often still too warm to feel like autumn completely dry. It is not common to have lots of rain in autumn or for the temperatures to feel like fall. Our autumn is usually one of bold and bronze colors but not of the cooler temperatures usually associated with how   one imagines the season should be.

This year we have autumn. Unusual rains and cooler temperatures in October and now a rainy, cold Thanksgiving. And the Holy Spirit is reminding me of His message in the rain and storms.

Oh, Lord, thank You for autumn and with the faith of being Your child, I say thank You, Lord, for storms which bring Your water into the spiritual deserts of hurting, dry hearts so seeds long thought dead can finally sprout and Your new life can come forth!

We received devastating news about someone we love the day before Thanksgiving.

As in everyday there is a choice to be made. Is God truly God or is He not? In my twenties I lived ten years in the place where I didn’t see how God could be real. Yet during those years when I chose to be absent from Him, I was dying without Him. No joy. No true peace. I was floundering to figure things out on my own and to make sense of it all even while I tried to stand resolute, firm and brave. But I was on a faulty foundation.

I returned 25+ years ago to faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord (the perfect representation of Father and the One who requested the Holy Spirit for us). This means by definition of faith, I do not have HIM all figured out. Yet, I have been witness to repeating, increasing evidence of God at work especially through what seem to be the worst circumstances. He never fails to work through all things to bring for the breakthrough, life and LIFE.

We are broken, imperfect humans, living broken, imperfect lives where we often make unwise choices which can lead to horrible consequences for us and those around us.

And though with us providing His blessing through all things, God’s greatest gifts are eternal in nature and He uses what we consider life’s worst to get others as well as us in position to receive His eternal blessings (which begin now).

The unusual rain is impetus to keep listening for what God wants. In addition, also in this unusual rain I sense His promise. It is His promise of restoration, increased life and LIFE if we will stay the course and seek to walk in His specific will.

When we first became aware of the direction things had actually taken for the one we love, it was Christmas Eve 2015 for me. The Lord nudged me that this revelation was part of my Christmas gift. At first, this just seemed cruel and unlike God. That is, until we recognize once again that it’s often through these things which seem so awful, that He is bringing His gifts. Through the storm, He is answering prayers and growing our spiritual muscle. We receive the gift of increased intimacy with Him while He is about the deep work of answering our prayers. This is because often when we have prayed for someone, only He has down the depth and expanse of what is needed to answer these prayers.

I have prayed what I call, “The Ugly Prayer” for those I love:

“Lord, take the ones I love wherever they need to go in life in order to come into the fullness of what you have for them and so they can walk out the God-given assignments You have for them.”

I meant it when I prayed this prayer even though I was completely aware that what I was praying for would not be answered by everything being easy and positive for those I loved. It would mean pitfalls and exposed weak spots which He would then lovingly tend to and shore up on Him the Rock and right foundation.

I could not pray the other prayer which was always so tempting: “Lord, protect the ones I love from everything which could harm them and let nothing bad happen in their lives.” This was not a prayer the Lord could answer the same way. Here remains earth and not heaven. There will be no escape from difficulties. Answer to this prayer would not bring us into the potential richness God had for us–into those blessed places where we must choose to let Him be God and grow us or not.

We live in a broken, fallen world with broken, faulty people who will affect themselves and others in ways which are not always right or good. Here will never be heaven. Ever. Human wisdom and way fails over and over through all generations.

So now in the midst of a raging storm, am I going to cower in fear, cry out in panic or give up in despair and become crippled by it? Has God changed? Is He still King over all on His throne? Have any of His promises been nullified?

No, God remains God and faithful. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Therefore, I will remain in Him, gazing at Him, singing His praises. He always has been and remains my singular hope. It is on His strength, power, wisdom, way and promises which I rely. His joy is my strength and in who He is and what He promises is my ongoing joy in spite of what I can see. I will sing His praises through it all and never stop, for I know who He is:

My Lord, You are Victor. You are never done. My Lord, You are Creator and Father who loves those I love even more than I do. My Lord, You are sovereign and nothing thwarts Your purposes. My Lord, Your purpose is eternal union with You because You are love. Heavenly One, Your love is unstoppable and supreme beyond defining. You are always Victor, my Savior and King. You, Lord, are the Shepherd who tends to very sheep. Because You are love, Your searching does not cease. You came to a manger, to show us the Father. Your love never ending, our Lamb and High Priest.

I either believe in Him or I don’t and He has shown me too much evidence of who He is and how He works not to believe. The enemy brings storms to destroy. God uses the storms to usher in His Living Water—Life comes forth through the storms.

So what am I to do? Will I crumble in the face of what I see for these waves are dangerously high? Or will I choose to continue to walk on water as He calls me, with eyes only for Him because my Lord calls me out. When He is resting in my boat will I panic, thinking He doesn’t notice the storm or rely on Him to know and bring it to cease and be still at His proper time (after His objectives have been accomplished).

My goal is to be in His will. My goal is to remain in Him receiving His joy and peace. This means I will choose to rejoice, give Him glory and rely on Him in this place.

The last few years I have decorated for Christmas less and more slowly. It has seemed like something which could easily get out of hand and in our exuberance—actually distract from focus on Jesus who came without worldly decorations or fanfare (even as heaven rejoiced).

But this year, in this excruciatingly hard place, I will walk by faith and as an expression of trust in Him, I will let nothing steal His gift of joy. Therefore as a symbolic expression of trust and commitment to be engaged in the party, I will decorate already today and enter into the celebration of my current and coming King, in thanksgiving for Who He has always been, is and will be.

Will We Join Creation and Give Him Glory?

Magnificent One, You reign. There is none like You. We know full well that we are the works of Your hands. We delight in You. We delight to do Your will and through every storm continue to sing Your praises and give You all glory for we know who You are and our trust is in You. You do not disappoint for as we declared to You in the beginning, indeed You reign. In Jesus' name, Amen

11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it.  12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. (Ps. 96:11-12)

7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it,  the world, and all who live in it. 8 Let the rivers clap their hands,  let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. (Ps. 98:7-9)

23 Sing for joy, you heavens, for the Lord has done this; shout aloud, you earth beneath.  Burst into song, you mountains, you forests and all your trees, for the Lord has redeemed Jacob, he displays his glory in Israel. (Isa. 44:23)

1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. 3 They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.  (Ps. 19:1-3)

You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. (Isa. 55:12)

7 Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. 8 I cling to you; your right hand upholds me. (Ps. 63:7-8)

17 The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.  He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. (Zeph. 3:17)

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. (Ps. 28:7)

16 But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.  17 You are my strength, I sing praise to you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely. (Psalm 59:16-17)

All creation declares the glory of God. Vibrating with essence of Him which created it, creation reverberates back to Him the fact that in Him all creation lives, moves and has its being.

We are the only part of creation who can choose to declare His glory—to acknowledge His place in our lives and honor Him in it—or not.  We are the only ones who can choose whether or not to be in His will—to be aligned with Him and what He desires to do in us and through us.

Oh, His place in our lives does not change when we choose to deny Him or ignore Him.  However, He cannot work as effectively through us or bless us bringing goodness into our lives here and now as well as eternity when we do not give Him the place which He already has (He owns it).

In Him, by Him and through Him we also live, move and have our being.  Without His will and power to complete it there is no life or LIFE for us.  We choose.  Today, will we declare His glory?  Or not?

To declare Him can be done with words, but not necessarily. Actually often words are less effective than simply how we choose to life for and by Him. This is not necessarily focusing on the “thou shalt not’s”, as much as living in the recognized victory of the cross.

Translated out of “Christian-ese”, this means we know God is real. We know heaven is our forever home. We understand through Jesus death is no longer the end. We are freed from the world’s way of seeing ourselves, life and others. We are working to gain the Lord’s perspective.  As we understand His eternal way more, we come to rest in who He is and what He promises. We receive His gifts of peace, love and even joy, which as we grow, we suddenly cannot stop from flowing through us to others.  We find our purpose–our life’s purpose now through eternity.

Truly, we have our place in society where we work. However, our purpose is deeper and greater than just this temporal work in a temporal world.  Our purpose is to be the reflection of Him in that place by our gazing at Him and letting His Holy Spirit work through us wherever this life takes us. His goal is that more will see Him.

We do not necessarily preach.  We keep our eyes on Him, listen and obey. He does the rest. Through this He is glorified!  This means people see Him instead of us because when we obey He as supernatural God causes things to happen which cannot be explained and cause the hearts of those around us to begin healing with His comfort and truth even as they sense an unfamiliar wonderful inner peace they do not understand and the first inklings of true joy. And if they ask, we can share the present hope and hope for the future we have found in Jesus, the Father and Holy Spirit for every aspect of our life, now and forever.

What will you choose? Who will you trust?  Can you do it on your own or will you acknowledge your need for Him to be there for you?  Remember, He is whether you acknowledge Him or not. But when you do—He gets the glory. When you live for Him, through how we are in Him, with Him and through Him we are declaring His glory—sometimes most effectively with no words at all.  We are joining with creation and singing high praise to the One we desire and who desires us.

This is the Kingdom of God perfect harmony constantly going forth and stretching from here to eternity which He has created where He sings over us as our Creator, Father and the One Who loves us and we and the rest of His creation sing back to Him.  It is exquisitely beautiful. It is the rhythm of heaven come to earth and earth reaching up to heaven. We get to choose to be part of it!  Isn’t His Way is magnificent?!

PSALM 92:

1 Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.  2 Sing to the Lord, praise his name;  proclaim his salvation day after day.  3 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.  4 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.  5 For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. 6 Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and glory are in his sanctuary.  7 Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.  8 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come into his courts. 9 Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth.  10  Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.”  The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity. 11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. 12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;  let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.  13 Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth.  He will judge the world in righteousness  and the peoples in his faithfulness.

PSALM 65:

1 Praise awaits you, our God, in Zion; to you our vows will be fulfilled.  2 You who answer prayer, to you all people will come. 3 When we were overwhelmed by sins, you forgave our transgressions. 4 Blessed are those you choose and bring near to live in your courts! We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple. 5 You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds, God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, 6 who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength, 7 who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations. 8 The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy. 9 You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it. 10 You drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops. 11 You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance. 12 The grasslands of the wilderness overflow; the hills are clothed with gladness. 13 The meadows are covered with flocks and the valleys are mantled with grain; they shout for joy and sing.

The Power of Choosing Worship

Lord, You are the Light in our Darkness. You are the dawn which illumines our Way. You are the strength by which every mountain in this life is climbed and from this place and every place we choose to adore You. Thank You for who You are. Thank You for Your promises which never fail. Thank You for Your love and that You are our one and only God and Lord. In Jesus' name, Amen

Since the Lord asks us to worship Him—to adore Him now on earth as is happening in heaven—and He promises to respond to mightily in return, perhaps practicing turning worry into worship would help us. What is it which concerns you? What is it that you are fervently praying for?  How could you take this heavy duty prayer request and rephrase it into worship which acknowledges you know the Lord is aware, in control and You trust Him for His result?

For example, for parents–say you are worried about your child.  Yes, He asks us to pray so He welcomes your prayers, “Lord, help.  Help with this child. Help him or her to…..”  AND, we can rephrase this as worship and honor Him as in-charge, all-powerful Lord and Shepherd who sees and goes after every lost sheep as a promise not a “maybe”.  So….how could we rephrase it.  “Lord, thank You for Your sovereignty in all things. Thank You that You love xxxx more than I do. Lord God, how amazing You are.  You are the good Shepherd.  You look after every sheep.  You do not lose even one and I know I can trust You to look after xxxx. How blessed to be able to rest in Your promises because You are faithful. I look with great anticipation to the result You will bring and will worship You and partner with you in prayer until it is done.”

Another example, when we are afraid.  Again, He welcomes our prayers. “Lord, help. Lord, something is not right. Lord, I am afraid this or that is going to happen. Lord, fix it please. Fix it please!  Lord, don’t let this or that happen.  Lord, fix it!”  AND, we can rephrase this into worship, such as: “Lord, You know this is afoot.  You know what could happen. Holy One, You are almighty. It is in You alone I trust. I trust in Your power, Your love and Your sovereignty. I trust in Your promise to use all things for good in light of Your eternal plans for all of us.  Lord God, because You are faithful, I choose (and this is hard) to lay down my will and entrust this situation to You.  You know my heart!!!  Lord God, You will bring the best result.  And in trust and adoration I thank You before I can see it.  Magnificent One, You reign.”

Any and all prayer requests can be rephrased into worshipful declarations. We are strengthened by them because it writes the Truth of who He is on our hearts and we are strengthened by this.  There will be storms in this life and so this helps us stand strong on the Rock of who He is as our unshakeable foundation so that we are not carried away by the wind and waves of life.

Even more importantly, our Lord is given the glory (the credit) and thus the honor He is due for the place He does hold in our lives.  This is not a place He has because we give it to Him (though He is honored through this). It is a place He has period. We choose whether to honor Him in this place or not.

It takes practice.  It begins with being aware of what we are thinking–what is running around as worry or concern in our minds—taking hold of these thoughts and actively putting them up against the truth of Christ.  St. Paul writes about this as taking our thoughts captive to Christ in his second letter to the Corinthians:

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.  (2 Cor. 10:4-6 NIV)

What are we thinking? What does the Lord promise? When we rephrase our thoughts to focus on His promises, our worries become worship.  He is honored and given the credit He is due (which is part of our purpose while we are still living in this world, though  no longer of is) and He responds with a release of His power in His timing always, always, always in ways which exceed our human expectations. He is almighty. His ways are eternal. He does not fail. His word returns victorious to Him.

11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.  (Eph. 1:11-12)

By His magnificent promised response to our worship, we are blessed and the work of His kingdom is furthered in us personally and the world around us. Yes, the power of worship is the power of His promised response.  We can rest in it (and rejoice!)

A Pause for Gratitude and an Update

Lord God, thank You for Your perfect magnificent Way. Your love and care for us astounds. We are in awe of how You work out all the details in each of our lives so each person receives what he or she needs from here to eternity. We can be at rest in You and rejoice because of the magnificence You are. In Jesus' name, Amen

It’s time for a cancer progress check-in. First the practical, then a reflection on God and His mysterious, wonderful way.

When last I wrote, the May 2015 ultrasound and scan (which were in the hopes of declaring my body cancer-free) showed some type of slight illumination on the scan which was not confirmed by the ultrasound. In other words, there was iodine uptake of some sort or a false positive of iodine uptake the neck and thyroid area, representing the scan detected some bit of thyroid tissue or thyroid cancer remaining. To be cancer-free the scan should have been completely dark. However, the ultrasound, which was to reveal potential masses growing where there should be nothing growing, indeed revealed nothing. So the ultrasound was terrific to which the scan added a question mark. Thus they could not say, “cancer-free” because they could not be sure. Perhaps there was something still there which was not yet large enough for the ultrasound to detect. Perhaps it would grow enough to be detected. Perhaps the scan had been a false positive of iodine uptake and there was nothing going on there at all. Perhaps….

The end result was a decision by the endocrinologist who oversees my care for me to have ultrasounds on the thyroid/neck area every few months to see if anything had grown enough to now be visible on the ultrasound or to gradually ultrasound by ultrasound confirm that actually no hidden cancer is growing there at all.

August 2015 was the first of these ultrasounds and indeed there was nothing there at all. So in January or February 2016 back to the blood draw and ultrasound I will be sent to do it all one more time. Meanwhile I have complete peace. Nothing in this life is sure except that eventually none of us are getting out of here alive so I have moved on. God knows the number of my days and I’m good with that.

However, I am grateful to God that in His grace He has seen fit to continue to provide vocal recovery—a recovery through recuperative, rehabilitation efforts by multiple experts, which now seems as if it will deliver an eventual result which enables me to have a stronger singing and speaking voice than ever before. I am abundantly grateful! For without the Lord showing me the way to Dr. Krzysztof Izdebski, who then has overseen my care with the others (notably Lucy Beck and Amy Lesico), there would have been no recovery. And while the ability or inability to talk easily or sing at all does not define quality of life, it is a gift to be able to use my voice!!! Though not fully restored yet and though for some unknown reason it is still painful to create sound vocally, my speaking voice finally has times when it sounds “normal” to me and like it used to be and I am beginning oh-so-slowly, but firmly (thankfully and joyously) to sing again. Oh how I have missed it!

For years I have used my voice almost exclusively to praise the Lord I love. It was something I truly took for granted for it was so easy. I simply opened my mouth whenever I willed it and song came forth. After six months where my post-surgery singing range was 3 tones (do-ray-mi-ack!!! no more sound!!!), and following over 9 months of active, daily vocal-therapy-specific exercises for improvement overseen by these wonderful people in whose care the Lord has placed me, what a gift to be able to do this again!

It gives me profound joy to announce that as of July 24, 2015 I returned to The Creation Lab in Turlock, CA to begin recording the lead vocals for the upcoming worship CD, “You’re My Healer”. This was my first time back to the recording studio since the same week in July exactly one year prior in order to make sure I completed recording the background harmony vocals for the “Christmas Bells Call to Worship” worship CD (released December 2014) in case I could not sing following the August 13th surgery—which I could not.

The Lord’s plan is awe-inspiring on so many levels. Though the cancer had been growing silently for a number of years, it was found and diagnosed in mid-July 2014.  A year earlier in August 2013 as I was in the studio with Michael Everett, Mark Davis and Brandon Davis laying the initial tracks for my second CD of mostly original Christmas worship songs (“Christmas Bells Call To Worship”), the Holy Spirit nudged me firmly to talk with Mike about booking the studio for February 2014 to begin recording another new full length worship project of original songs, but this time it would be songs with which those who were seeking healing from the Lord could worship Him. Interiorly I was thrilled the Lord was asking me to do this because the February dates marked the 10th anniversary of my friends Andrea, Lori and Nicole praying over me to begin hearing new worship songs from heaven during our Bible study worship time in February 2004 as well as the day after their prayers when I “heard” the first new song. What an incredible, truly God-given way to commemorate the event!

Of course, I obeyed, booked the studio and began listening for His new melodies and lyrics in late 2013 for this new healing worship project.  Along the way I did mention to the Lord how aware I was that He was asking me to write lyrics for something I had never experienced myself. Certainly, I had been ill before. But since coming back to faith in Christ as Savior and Lord over 20 years before, I had not had to endure an illness which required me to lean on Him for His healing.

The timing of the scheduled initial recording of the songs in February 2014 became even more impactful when my close, close friend Andrea was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer on January 14, 2014 exactly one month following the first Carols at the Capitol event which she had obediently put on in response to an assignment from the Lord. I knew and know here is not our final home, but only a place of temporary fallible living (and eventual physical death). However, Andrea’s diagnosis and prognosis was so close to the February 2014 recording date, that it definitely effected how I listened for His lyrics and caused me to select certain songs I had composed earlier to be added to the “You’re My Healer” project.

Indeed, in a way only the Lord could have orchestrated, in February 2014 we laid the initial tracks of a few basic instruments for all the songs for “You’re My Healer”. However, after this strong start, progress on “You’re My Healer” stopped. This was not our lack of focus, but the Lord’s plan.  I did not know it then, but He did not want me to have time the remainder of spring 2014 to work on singing my final vocals for the project. He already knew I had cancer and would be officially beginning my own healing journey by mid-year. The singing of these songs was to be during my own journey.  However, He had wanted the music ready.

Is it not amazing as my voice now slowly has been recovering, that these songs are already prepared musically, just waiting for me to vocally recover enough to sing them in the studio? Is it not beyond belief that He has ordained my voice to be added to this worship project while it is still recovering when this project exists to accompany others on their own healing journey as they seek to lean on God through it? Only our Lord could have set this up. Who knows all and thinks this way but Him?! Wonder of wonders!

Especially the first few times in the studio starting in July 2015 it was excruciatingly hard. I drove the 1.5 hours each way sometimes to do one song each time. It was hard to sing, hard to move from pitch to pitch and hard to form the sounds required for each of the lyric’s words. Certain consonants and vowels were still quite difficult.

Though standing behind the microphone to record is always humbling and one has to fight a fear of inadequacy or insufficiency, these times it was intensely more than ever before. And the sound which came out was not exactly as I would have wished! However, I knew this was how my Lord wanted His music done—singing through my healing for those seeking healing to join in.  As always, I prayed both before we began and interiorly as I was offering Him the worship songs one by one into the microphone.

These were His songs, which He had given me to sing. Like all the other worship projects which have preceded “You’re My Healer”, this one was also His not mine and I knew what He enabled me to do would be sufficient for His purposes. He had told me clearly it was time to begin singing again. I had obeyed. I trusted Him. My singular request on all of my worship projects is not that people would experience my voice, but that through my obedience to His call for me to release these songs, that He would imbue the songs with the power of His Holy Spirit so that all who listened and sang along would be touched by Him in the way they each needed to grow closer to Him day by day. It was my prayer for this one too. JOY!

In addition, I was once again blessed by Michael Everett, who in his role as producer was oh-so-gentle with me, working with me in the short bursts of singing stamina I had to make the recording of the songs as easy on me as possible.

As of September 25, 2015 the final lead vocals for all 11 songs have been completed. There remain only two harmonies each to add to the last six songs and my work on this project is done. God is so good! He has been so immeasurably kind to me! His provision of this healing has bordered on miraculous because it didn’t have to go this way.

In addition because of what I experienced in the first weeks following the 2014 cancer surgery, there will be another new worship project produced in the next month. It will be an improvisational piano-only worship CD of original music called, “Worship When Words Are Too Much”.

Directly following surgery, I tried to listen to worship music and offer the lyrics heavenward as I always, always do. However, following the cancer surgery this was more than I could mentally accomplish. My body required so much energy directed towards the immense physical recovery that there was no mental energy left with which to engage with the words. In fact, the lyrics made it so I couldn’t listen to the music because the message of the words automatically began to draw me in, but it was simply too much for me. Thus as I began to recover (and during that time I could not sing at all), He began to give me little melody lines which have developed into worship music where the offering is music only with no words. Each song has a theme—a basic worshipful thought behind it which I contemplate as I play the song instrumentally. For instance for one the theme is “His peace”, for another “trust”, for another “at rest in Him”, etc. My prayer is that since all this is done in obedience to His promptings that His Spirit would be on this new music so it would touch those who hear it His way to accomplish His healing, restoring purposes in them (as only He can.)

Both these music projects will be available latest February 2016, the 10th anniversary of stepping out in faith and beginning to record original worship music in accordance with the Holy Spirit’s instruction with Michael Everett at The Creation Lab in February 2006. Wow….what an amazing journey.

Meanwhile I continue seeing Dr. Krzysztof Izdebski and Lucy Beck, two specialists who continue to guide me toward fuller and more complete vocal restoration. They are kind to me. They are patient with me. They guide me expertly, willingly using their God-given gifts to help me and help others. When I could find no help, the Lord led me specifically to them. For Dr. Krzysztof Izdebski, Lucy Beck and Amy Lesico (who helped me for months with speech), I am grateful beyond what any human words can express—both to the Lord God who gave me the gift of connection with Dr. Izdebski and for how the Lord has used him and those to whom he has referred me for vocal song and speech therapy to enable my recovery (a recovery which would not have just happened on its own). There would be no good speech or song from my voice if they were not willing to do the work the Lord has given them!

I am also profoundly grateful to the Lord God, who in His plan decided to allow me to suffer a cancer which is curable. I know my eternal destiny. I am confident in it. I know here is not God’s long-term best for me. Yet, I do so love serving Him here and for the moment He has granted me more time to do this. (He knows at what instant—any instant—when my time here is done.) So I am thankful for now, for this moment, and at rest in how His way from here to eternity works.

Yet through this cancer journey our magnificent Lord God also has affirmed yet another aspect of His often incomprehensible way. Our Lord most definitely uses us for His kingdom work wherever this life takes us. Wherever!  And I am thankful!

It is not only how He takes what the enemy means for evil and uses it for good, but how He uses it for His more. He makes out of the ugliest places an assignment –a God assignment—which is part of furthering His kingdom and making it known on earth as in heaven. He uses our most undesirable circumstances out of which to write a God-story, raising beauty from ashes and anointing the heads of many with His oil of joy and gifts of salvation and abundant inner peace, all from an increasing knowing from the inside out of who and how He is.

Therefore wherever life takes us (and we know this will include suffering, unfairness, evil, hate and injustice because this is earth where Satan rules, not heaven), becomes a critical part of accomplishing His Great Commission, that He would be revealed to all people and every individual would have the opportunity to see Him and begin to know Him as both Savior and Lord.   There are also God-assignments which take us into trenches where despite the hardships we personally endure, He can flow through us to be His triage unit and safe place for recuperation and strengthening for all those who have been wounded (which includes every one.) It is when we are on these God assignments, which He has made of the hard places and spiritual battlefields which take us places which we would never have chosen for ourselves, that He uses us to spread the fragrance of His truth (by the power of His Holy Spirit) which contrasts so sharply with the stench of the wisdom of this world.

There are those who are seeking Him even if they do not yet even know His name. Inherently interiorly they know there is more for us in life than is apparent even though they don’t know what (who) it is and how to find it. It is God they seek because He created us for this intimate connection with Him. We are incomplete without it—without HIM—and deep down inside we recognize the lack.

There is an intrinsic incompleteness, a discontent and dissatisfaction until we find our fulfillment in adopted sonship and daughtership in Him, restored to the place in His eternal kingdom for which He created us. This is an aspect of the darkness our Lord speaks about and how He is the Light of the world.

He is the Truth. Looking but not knowing how to find Him or having begun to know Him yet not knowing how to pursue the fullness of relationship with Him—this is the darkness, sadness, depression, discouragement and lack of hope into which Jesus came and into which the Holy Spirit still desires to come to others working through us.

Thus sometimes the places we have to go in life are dark. We do not want to be there. We wish we could be somewhere else. And yes, often these hard places are an aspect of this fallen world and not at all like the heaven He has planned for us. It feels more like the desert wilderness than the Promised Land.

Yet, He is with us there too and we must be attentive to the assignment He has for us there. We are not the Light of the world. But we are lamps He has made to carry His Light into the dark places—the truth about life now, life eternal, God in it and through it and the living and active Holy Spirit here with us now with His gifts of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control.

Like in Isaiah, our Lord is calling—whom shall I send! He is looking for response: “Send me.” How will they see His Light if we don’t go on or if we are filled with so much fear and despair that He Himself must send those to help us and we are incapable of being used by Him to be His love, truth and comfort to others?

Rarely is it so one-sided. Usually we have times of both: times where He can flow through us because our trust in Him is strong and times of being utterly human where we forget He is there using us there and that we have a hope and a future promised (a good one) even if that promise is heaven sooner than we thought we wanted.

Our hope—the hope of Jesus—is that death is no longer the end. It is in this promise we rejoice. It is in this promise we can stand strong in the storm which seems to envelope us in darkness and tries to steal what we thought we had. Our Lord is the Light to our future. Nothing and no one can steal this destiny. When we grasp this by His grace and choose to rely on it, the Holy Spirit can flow through us as the river of Life that He is, especially in the dark and dry places, to touch the world.

On a very practical note, in my own journey into the dark places of cancer eradication and recovery where I continue to pray to be His light, there have been many wonderful, caring, self-less prayer warriors (family, friends and others where sometimes we have not yet even met face-to-face—you know who you are!!!) who have been oh-so faithfully with me by His Spirit the whole time covering me in prayer. I am grateful beyond ability to adequately express it. Such selfless giving to pray for another! I can never pay you back. Thank you so very, very, very much for praying for me so faithfully all this time!

As you can see, I am here to formally report your prayers are answered and better than you may have been able to imagine. He did not answer your prayers for immediate, instant, complete healing. It has been oh-so-gradual and therein lies the last point for which I am thankful because the gradual healing has been the greater blessing.

There are multiple aspects to this. He has taught me to enjoy the quiet even more than before through the months of inability to speak in most situations. He has taught me that often fewer words need to be spoken. He has allowed me to clearly hear the difference between chatter and what my grandmother called, “good talk”.

However the most powerful aspect of the blessing of gradual healing over immediate healing is that through it He has graced me to come to know individuals whom I never would have met (because I never would have needed to ask the Lord to help me find them). Between us, we have been blessed to pour into each others’ lives in incredible, indelible ways. I never would have known these individuals who are literal gifts to me and for whom I now pray daily. My life would have been less without them. They have made my life richer and I would not have wanted to miss knowing them. Oh the wonder of His magnificent ways from here until the day He finally calls each of us home.  His way is perfect. I am grateful. Let’s rejoice!

Selah!

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it…The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. (John 1:1-5,9-13)

16 the people living in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.  (Matt. 4:16)

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. (Matt. 5:14-15)

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”  (Isa. 6:8)

“Let Them Know I Am An Intercessor”

Oh our Lord and God, we are each here for but a season. Let not a moment be wasted. To honor and remember Andrea O’Brien

by Elizabeth Fulgaro

LUKE 8:15

“But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.”

Introduction

August 14, 2015 marks the 3rd anniversary of when the Lord visited my friend, Andrea O’Brien and gave her the assignment to start a new Christmas worship movement called, Carols At The Capitol. Andrea passed from life to LIFE on June 2, 2015 and our hearts ache with missing her.

The last time I saw her was Mother’s Day evening May 10th. I had been invited to cook dinner and bring it over. Andrea and I had not had a chance to really talk alone with each other for a week or so. There had been a welcoming, loving frenzy around her at the Danville National Day of Prayer event three days before and thus no time to really connect personally and talk. Now alone on her family room couch I was listening closely to all Andrea was intent on sharing with me. She was so ill.

About midway through our two hours together she looked at me quite seriously and said, “Will you do something for me?”

“Sure,” I answered.

“Will you speak at my funeral?”

I felt tears well up at the edges of my eyes. “Yes, Andrea. Of course….What would you like me to talk about? What would you like people to know?”

She did not hesitate with her response. “Tell them about how I am an intercessor. Let them know about the powerful intercession with which we have been involved. Many don’t know this about me. I want them to know.”

“Ok, my dear friend. I will do it. It would be an honor to do this for you.”

We continued our deep conversation until she was too weary to continue. We hugged. At her request, I left her reclined on the family room couch. To her chagrin (amazing hostess that she was) she was too weak to show me to the door.

Ever since she had made this request, I had been pondering what exactly she meant by it. I was honored beyond words to be asked to do this, but I also was praying, asking the Lord how it was to be done. The Holy Spirit had put this topic on her heart and now she had passed the assignment to me. Since it was His idea, He knew what was to be said, how to say it, when and to whom.

However, speaking at her Memorial was not to be. Though day after day through May I had prayed for the Lord to orchestrate her passing so that I would be able to attend, she passed from life to LIFE less than 3 days before our son and I left on a long-scheduled trip to Europe to visit old friends. The memorial would occur while we were gone.

Our Lord could orchestrate anything! At the airport, He had orchestrated for me to lift my cell phone, with its ringer set to “silent” out of my purse at the exact moment Andrea’s eldest daughter, Allie, was calling in response to a text I had sent. This call was a treasure to both of us! He had even orchestrated for the plane to be over an hour delayed, so I was not in the air yet and could receive Allie’s phone call. Yet, He had not enabled me to attend Andrea’s Memorial, let alone speak there as she had asked. What was I supposed to do with this message she had asked me to deliver? Lord, what do you want me to do with this?

Sharing the role powerful intercession had played in her life did not seem like it would be a surprise to most of those at the memorial. Didn’t they know this about Andrea already? I mean didn’t people know that being a strong intercessor went hand in hand with her faith and all she did for her Lord in faith? In fact, intercession was integral. Intercession gave everything else she did its foundation. Intercessory prayer was that upon which her actions for the Lord were built. People knew this, didn’t they?

Hmmm…Maybe not. Just in case, perhaps I could or even should write about my dear friend, Andrea O’Brien, as the powerful intercessor who she was. Thus as the airplane lifted off the San Francisco runway bound for Europe taking me away from Andrea’s Memorial, the Holy Spirit led me to write what follows.

Andrea O’Brien, Powerful Intercessor for the Most High God

My birthday lunch May 2007. L to R Lori Duffy, Elizabeth Fulgaro, Andrea O'Brien. The Lord called us His Daughters of Praise. The three of us worshipped together, sought His will together, prayed for it together and encouraged one other while we each walked out our individual parts.
My birthday lunch May 2007. L to R Lori Duffy, Elizabeth Fulgaro, Andrea O’Brien. The Lord called us His Daughters of Praise. The three of us worshipped together, sought His will together, prayed for it together and encouraged one other while we each walked out our individual parts.

I was blessed to have Andrea O’Brien as a dear, close and trusted friend for over 15 years. We had met in Moms in Prayer (then called Moms in Touch) group for the San Ramon Valley Christian Academy, gathering weekly to pray for our children and their school. Beyond a wife and mother, first and foremost Andrea was a daughter of Most High God and she knew it. She didn’t just believe in the existence of God. She believed God had created us for relationship with Him. She understood that the original relationship with the Lord, which He had intended, had been damaged by Adam and Eve’s choices (with negative repercussions for all of their progeny). They had made their own decision regarding what was right and wrong instead of submitting to God’s leading. In so doing they had asserted they wanted to be their own god, thus separated themselves from the One True and Only God.

Therefore Andrea understood that our relationship with God during this temporary life is not everything it was always meant to be. Faith in Jesus and the choice to follow Him makes all the difference because it takes advantage of Jesus’ offer to restore our relationship with God to what He had always planned. The full benefits of this restoration process would not be enjoyed until heaven, but it could begin and move forward mightily now. By faith in Jesus and what He did for us we became part of His kingdom which was definitely to be enjoyed now and simultaneously not fully yet.

The choice to believe in and seek to follow Jesus gave Andrea’s life its purpose and direction. Andrea spent her time seeking to hear from and listen to her Lord because she understood in order to be a follower of Him, she was to imitate the example He set through His own life.

She knew that Jesus –even though Son of God and thus equal with God (for He was fully God Himself)—set aside His own will to do only that which He saw Father God doing. Jesus exclusively did the will of His Father. Thus in order for us to imitate Jesus, we needed to listen for the will of God as whispered in our hearts by the Holy Spirit and set aside our own will to embrace and carry out His.

To be in a state of listening for God’s instructions accompanied by a readiness to obey is a form of communication with God. Prayer is what we call the various forms of communication with Him. Thus to be in a such a state of listening so that by His grace and the activity of the Holy Spirit we can hear and obey is to be in a state of ongoing prayer.

Sometimes our obedience to the Lord is to listen and then pursue specific good actions which we believe He is leading us to do now. Other times, He leads us not in the doing (yet), but in partnering with Him yet a little while in prayer.

In this type of prayer we frequently are not praying necessarily for ourselves, though sometimes we are praying specifically for individuals. Other times we are praying for communities, nations or the entire world. Sometimes the prayers are uttered silently in the depths of our hearts. Other times we literally declare out loud into the atmosphere around us that which He has led us to believe He has purposed in heaven (in the spiritual realm) and desires to birth into the world (into the natural realm) where we live. We continue to declare the impending coming of these things in faith until we see the evidence of the fulfillment of His will in the world around us—until that which we believe He has purposed and planned in heaven for earth has been accomplished by His power. Sometimes this prayer is in a group setting. Other times it is when we are alone with God. Sometimes it is for minutes, hours or days. Other times it is for years or even a lifetime.

When we pray in this way, we are partnering with our Lord and actually imitating Christ. Scripture tells us that once Jesus ascended into heaven following His death and resurrection, He became seated at the right hand of the Father with all things under His feet (under His power and authority). Yet even as the worship around Him as Lamb of God and King of kings is ongoing, Jesus simultaneously continues to pray for us right now. Scripture tells us Jesus is “interceding” for us from this position at the right hand of Father God. Stunning! God on the throne and from that position He is praying for us!

This is the essence of intercession—of intercessory prayer.   The word “intercede” literally means to intervene on behalf of another.  Even though Jesus enabled full restoration of relationship with God through the actions of His death on the cross and resurrection, we must each still choose Him. Meanwhile, He continues to stand in the gap between heaven and earth to pray for us.

Clearly, since Jesus enthroned as our heavenly King continues to intercede for us, intercessory prayer also must be an integral part of His divine and perfect way of life for us—where we intervene before God on behalf of others and the whole world. By the example set by Jesus, this confirms intercessors are not to just pray for themselves, neither do they pray their own will. Intercessors listen for God’s will in the moment and then pray forward what they perceive to be on God’s heart. We pray; we obey; the Lord releases His power and then He often works through us in the process to fulfill His will for every person now through eternity.

Through Jesus, we have received position (authority) to partner with Him in this prayer. As believers and followers, though still temporarily very much still in this world, we are no longer of it and have been spiritually seated in the heavenly realms with Jesus even now. As Jesus intercedes for us from His position at the right hand of God, so we also pick up the spiritual sword He has given us in the Word of God, listen for His leading and pray with Him in one accord. We are praying on earth as in heaven, in essence by our God-powered and God-directed intercession calling into being (by the power of God) that which He desires to birth on the earth by the authority He has given us as His children and heirs.

Ultimately, all intercession is about the Lord’s great plan to draw all people to Himself in Spirit and truth, enabling those who seek Him to receive the restored relationship and eternal life with Him which became possible through the work of Jesus. Compelled by nudges from the Holy Spirit (which is called the prophetic) regarding what to pray when, intercessors choose to sacrifice personal time and energy to partner with God in prayer for His good purposes to be fulfilled in the lives of all He loves (which is every single person). Then often but not always, eventually intercessors can be called to specific tangible actions related to that for which they have been praying, through which God works to bring sovereign His will to fruition. Such was the case for Andrea with Carols At The Capitol and the National Day of Prayer gatherings in Danville.

At her core, Andrea O’Brien was an intercessor for her Lord. She was a powerful intercessor, because her intercession was led by His Spirit and thus it was empowered by Him. She did not pray for her will, but sought to know and pray for His. Intercession was key, foundational work to which He called her on an ongoing basis. It preceded and accompanied everything else she did and by her intercession she not only prayed the Lord’s will forward, but sought His specific steps for every day of her life.

Andrea relied on the Word of God, the Bible, more than any other tool in her intercession, using it in her prayer, letting the Holy Spirit lead her to specific verses or bring them to mind at particular moments. This was because Andrea knew what the Lord promised about His Word. First, His Word was Truth—the revealed will and ways of God. In addition, one of her most quoted verses about the Word of God was Hebrews 4:12:

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Heb. 4:12 NIV)

Andrea understood the power of our words and the authority with which we operate because she understood the power of the Lord’s Word. She understood how in John 1 He declared in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. God is Almighty. It is through His Word that all things were created. He spoke and what He spoke came to be. We are made in God’s image. Thus she understood that in our words was the power to build up and create and the power to destroy.

Sound is vibrations. Thus sound released has a physical, emotional and even spiritual effect on the world around us. Stated another way that which we put out through our words into the atmosphere can shift the atmosphere either in a direction which invites more of the presence of God and the effects of the magnification of His Spirit in our midst, or pushes us toward a more worldly perspective, where powers contrary to God have the upper hand.

Andrea wanted to welcome and exalt God alone. She wanted to impact the atmosphere—the invisible spiritual realm—and the world for God. Andrea was a warrior for her Lord. Her allegiance was completely to her King of kings and Lord of lords. She wanted to be an authentic follower of Jesus, which meant she only wanted God’s will. Thus in an effort to discern His direction for this moment and her life, Andrea’s method of operation was to worship (often accompanied by fasting) to let the Lord know she was seeking Him. By her worship and fasting she sought to honor Him and acknowledge that she knew He was the One with the power, plan and answers. He was the only God, the Most High One who alone was worthy of her attention. He was more important than anything else and she wanted Him to know it.

Consistently, alongside worship and fasting, Andrea could be found reading His Word and waiting for Him to speak to her through it. This was not just at weekly worship services. More often it was daily before Him privately on her own. She knew we were created to worship Him and by her worship and sacrificial fasting she wanted to simultaneously honor Him for this place in her life and invite Him to have His way fully with hers.

All of this goes back to a part of God’s truth, which Andrea knew well. We live in a reality where there are forces at work which are natural and supernatural, visible and invisible, physical and spiritual. The truth is there is a spiritual reality around us at all times, beyond that which we can see which is more powerful than us in nature—there is God’s good and then there is well….the other side, which is the opposite of good—both super-natural (beyond what is possible naturally for us as human beings). Everything visible was created out of the invisible. The invisible spiritual existed first. Then God spoke and what He spoke was created in the visible realm.

God has a will. God has a specific plan. Andrea knew this with her whole heart and being. There are still circumstances and situations God wants to cause to come to pass in the visible realm today. Andrea longed to always be His faithful servant, partnering with Him in worship and prayer for release of His power to accomplish His purposes. Andrea wanted only God’s will—His plans and His ideas—and not her own. Thus worship of God to honor Him as in-charge thereby putting Him “on the throne” in our lives, along with intercessory prayer simultaneous to study of His Word undergirded everything which Andrea did.

We change and grow, but God does not. He remains the same, yesterday, today and tomorrow. This means how He is recorded to have been with the Israelites in the Old Testament and how Jesus is recorded to have been while on earth with His disciples, is how we can expect Him to be with us still today. We read the Word. We learn more about Him and how He has operated in the past. We absorb His promises as the Holy Spirit honors our seeking of Him through His Word, by writing the deep truth (the revelation of God) from what we are reading on our hearts. Our faith grows. We understand the One in whom we have chosen to believe a little more every time. We comprehend better His purposes and He lets us know how we can serve Him and why by previous examples.

The Word and worship, worship and the Word (often accompanied by fasting) these were ways Andrea employed ongoing to seek the Lord more and inquire what He might want her to understand, how she should pray and what He might want from her.

Andrea tended her private relationship with the Lord in this way, but she also knew the importance of being in community with other like-minded believers. We are described as the many parts of His Body where Christ is the Head (the “brains” of the operation). None of us can function completely separately from each other. We are connected.

She sought to know Him more through organized group Bible studies. Thus Andrea augmented her personal study, worship and prayer. She knew if we seek He promises to be found by us! She knew we can never fully plumb His depths—never know Him fully—so we would be lifelong seekers, ever trying to learn more about Him.

Through participation in a local group called the Blackhawk Bible Study got her first real drink of the cool, refreshing, invigorating, enlivening Living Water of the Holy Spirit. In autumn 2003, she felt led to write and lead her own Bible Study upon which the Lord later bestowed the name: Daughters of Praise. Every week she spent hours in fasting, personal private worship and intercession asking God to tell her what she should teach, in which order and how to write it up. Simultaneously she interceded for those He was calling to attend her study.

God was faithful. Every woman who attended grew mightily in her understanding of the Lord by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. At the same time even as she led the group, her own understanding of and commitment to worship, intercession and the Word grew. At our weekly Bible study gathering times, under her leadership we were encouraged to practice together what we had been learning. This included: the power of words because of the power of His Word (the power which is on blessing and cursing—one positive and the other negative), the power of declaration, the mandate to be intercessors, the call to worship and the critical importance of listening for His will as the foundation of everything else.   As the group continued, we experienced a shift from praying more for husbands, children and schools, to praying for our nation, nations, the world, His Kingdom come, His will be done on earth as in heaven and for the expansion of this Kingdom. (That means more people coming to faith in Jesus Christ in a way which they began to imitate His life—following His way,—too.)

Only after prolific worship, followed by intercession did we settle down every week to delve into His Word and learn more. Worship and prophetic intercession preceded our study. We wanted to invite Him to have His way with us during our study time. We wanted to welcome Him in by our worship. And we wanted to join with His purposes through intercession, praying forward only that which we believed He was showing us.

At her core, Andrea was an evangelist. She understood her Lord’s ultimate plan and wanted to fulfill His place for her in it until He called her home. She wanted everyone to know and choose her Lord. She wanted governments to bow to Him and let Him be their King by establishing and enforcing laws which matched His way. With her Lord she knew to expect the unexpected and that He made the impossible possible. She believed and did not doubt.

This increasing habit of a lifestyle of ongoing personal and corporate worship linked with prophetic intercession (praying forward what she sensed was on God’s heart) carried over into Andrea’s life and the personal lives of the rest of us at the study. Once Andrea grabbed hold of what she thought His will was, then she would declare it, confident in His ability to bring whatever His will was into fulfillment. Understanding that God’s Word was the most perfect and powerful of all, she would speak out what she perceived to be God’s plan in agreement with Him and wherever possible, link specific Scripture to what she thought the Lord was looking to accomplish through it. Then while she interceded for God’s will to be done on earth as she perceived was already His plan from heaven, she would listen to whether beyond declaration there were specific steps God ordained her to take toward the visible accomplishment of what had been declared.

I was a beneficiary of her study of the Word, worship and listening for His will—what He was doing and wanted to bring forth (prophetic).  I obeyed a prompting of the Holy Spirit to bring forward a song the Lord had had me compose years before so that we could worship to it at our Bible study. Andrea sensed the Lord was using that song as a prompt for our small group to lay hands on me and pray (led by Andrea who was led by the Holy Spirit) that I would begin hearing new worship songs from heaven which would go around the world. Since that day I have written well over 400 new original worship songs, over 100 of which have been professionally recorded and indeed they have been shipped and listened to on every continent. It was Andrea who sensed the Holy Spirit wanted prayer for this for me that February day in 2004. Her obedience to lead the others in prayer has born huge fruit. This was also how Carols At The Capitol was birthed after the Lord visited her and gave her the assignment (and she heard and believed) the night of August 14, 2013. She sensed what God wanted done experiencing His very presence with her giving her the assignment. She dared to believe what He told her and act upon it as He led. As she did, He opened doors to enable that which was His will. Thus, that which He had “prophetically” revealed to her (His plan of that which was to come) went into fulfillment. (On the second Saturday of this December 2015 will be the 3rd annual Carols At The Capitol celebration.)

Andrea was aware that by the Holy Spirit we are now the ones who partner with God that all might know Him. There is no spanning the gap between us and God which existed from natural birth to natural death without Jesus. It could not be spanned by our well-intended efforts. No amount of good deeds creates a ticket to restored paradise-like relationship with Father God. There is no way we could personally cause our spirits to be released into God’s presence when at natural death the physical body becomes a shell devoid of life. We had neither the power to stop natural death, nor the power to cause our spirits at that moment to soar into God’s eternal presence where everything good he has ever desired to give us awaits. Without Him there is no way for us to bridge the gap between the visible we know and the invisible which is around us, but always beyond our grasp. We could not wish into existence this restored relationship with God. We have no ability to able to grab hold of and ultimately receive the fullness of all for which HE has created us. Jesus made clear the only way to Father is through Him.

Andrea knew this. She comprehended completely that eternal life following physical death was a gift, which could not be bought or earned—only received. It was a free gift from a gracious God through Jesus when we chose to consciously, actively place Him back on the throne of our lives, actually looking to Him to lead us according to His way versus our own.

Though God-honoring (good works) were the result of receiving the gift, (God-honoring works are naturally occurring evidence that we are have put Him back “on the throne” or in authority over our lives and are trying to live His Way), the receipt of the gift of restored eternal life so that death is no longer the end and we were no longer separated from our eternal destiny with God was by Father’s grace alone. Jesus was and is the Gate through which we would enter in.

Andrea united herself to her Lord’s purposes that all would have opportunities to encounter Him, know Him and choose Him, so they would receive the eternal inheritance in Him for which they were created. Worship. Fasting. Intercessory prayer. Discerning His will. Walking it out. Andrea was constantly trying to partner with her Lord for His results in her life, her family, her community and the world.

How many still needed to know this?

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it…9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. (John 1:1-5;9-13)

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. (John 3:16-18)

Thus where Andrea said to me, “Tell them I’m an intercessor”, I believe this is what she wanted people to know. Her life was consumed with her Lord and His purposes. She was consistently listening for she wanted His plan, not her own. She looked to partner with God through declaration and Spirit-led action for fulfillment of His eternal purposes. She sought to discern her God-given part which would contribute to His plans designed in eternal heaven to be birthed into this world in which we live. She would do this heartily until His appointed time to take her fully home to Himself, which we now know was June 2, 2015.

It was this consuming God-focus with ongoing worship, fasting, listening and intercessory prayer, which made orchestrating the two first National Days of Prayer (2014 and 2015) in Danville, California a perfect fit for the calling God had on her life. It is why the Lord knew He could trust her when He gave her the assignment of Carols At the Capitol.

Andrea strove to run the race that her Lord set before and run that race faithfully, persevering to the end. When her life here was done she longed to hear His words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” I believe with all my heart this is how He greeted her as she bridged from our here and now into eternity.

We will each leave this life as Andrea did at His appointed time. Our work here will be done and we will enter into His eternal presence. Andrea left behind the fragrance of Christ, so that more could know of Him, experience Him and ultimately find Him. What fragrance will each of us choose to leave behind? The present is all we have to make His difference His way by the power of His Holy Spirit.

May we learn from Andrea’s example. May we each pick up the sword of His Word as we seek to listen for His will. May we worship Him ongoing and as we seek to discern His plans and declare them according to His word. May we listen ongoing and then go out in obedience to do our specific God-given part (and only our specific God-given part), so that of our generation it would be said that indeed His kingdom has come and His will is being done on earth as in heaven.

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.  (Col. 3:16)

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. (2 Tim. 2:15)

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.  (Matt. 24:35)

6… All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field.  7 The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.  (Isa. 40:6-8)

If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.  (John 15:7)

Rewards of Choosing to Worship HIM

Holy One, You alone are God. You alone are Lord. In all things You are. You reign over the heavens and the earth. All creation at all times declares Your majesty and sovereignty. We too, are Your creation. We too, bow to You and choose to thank You for Your wondrous care. All things are indeed in Your hands. In You we trust completely. We breathe out every burden we have picked up that is not ours to carry and breathe in the reality of who You are and what You promise. We are overwhelmed by the gift of Your peace which surpasses all understanding. We will worship You without ceasing because of Who You are and what You promise. We will be ever listening for our heart's desire is to be Your servants in Your will. We are ready to walk out Your will at all times, not by our power, but by Yours working within us. You reign! We give thanks! In Jesus' name, amen

Seems like for all of us we are either in a storm or there is a storm brewing at all times–always something threatening on the horizon or which has to be dealt with already.  Our Lord is very aware that this is how our lives are.  Jesus lived this too.

Yet in spite of this reality, our Lord says we are NOT to worry. He is Dwelling Place, Refuge, never leaves us or forsakes us (or those we love) and has all things in His hands.  These are but some of His promises!

Hmmm….so what are we to do instead of worry and be anxious? We choose to TRUST Him, consciously laying down our burdens and lifting our eyes to Him until our thoughts are transformed by the Truth of who He is, which silences the worry of what might be.

His response is to reward us with His rest, His gift of inner peace.  Then as when we choose to use our precious time and energy to WORSHIP and PRAISE our LORD instead of worrying or despairing, He rewards this sacrificial expression of trust with an invasion of His love and power into our circumstances in bold, brilliant, often-wonderful ways we cannot anticipate.  We are stunned by His actions, awed by His masterful demonstrations of supremacy and His infinitely kind expressions of supreme love.  He is not just a God far away, but shows us He is near and very much God of the details.

When we change our worry into worship, taking our thoughts captive to Christ, choosing to change the wording of our prayers to reflect our confidence in who HE is and HIS promises, two profound things happen.  We are changed from the inside out in ways which delight and nourish our souls. Simultaneously, He comes and by His might, in His perfect timing He shifts our circumstances in ways which are glorious

This will never be heaven! Worshiping the Lord does not guarantee we get what we want! However, it does help us to remain in the gift of His peace which surpasses all understanding in all circumstances and to be ready to accept that which is His will versus our own.  In addition, because hectic and anxiety are not reigning and ruling within us, it causes His Light to illumine us more from the inside out, which helps others to find Him and therewith make progress on their own journeys home.  This is the Lord’s heart! It is fulfillment of His great mission for all He loves (and yes, He loves all). Yes, indeed, our King uses all, all, all things for good in light of His eternal purposes and His divine plans are a reflection of His unlimited, infinite, insatiable love for every single one of us.

When we choose worship instead of worry, we facilitate the ushering in of fulfillment of His purposes, giving Him permission—yes, even invitation–for His Holy Spirit to work for us and through us. Our worship honors Him in a way which invites more of His Spirit into the atmosphere where He cannot help but continue the healing, restoring work He longs to do in others as they begin to have encounters with Him as well.  This is never by our power but by His response to our choice to worship. It is part of His kingdom come, His will be done on earth as in heaven, for which Jesus told us to pray.

Our Lord reigns! Thank goodness!

Thanks be to You, Lord! What would our lives be without You?!

Therefore when trials threaten or come–and they do–we look to change our thoughts and words into utterances of adoration.  We go from, “Lord, help!” to “Lord, thank You that You are in control and greater than every circumstance. Thank You for Your perfect plan and power to complete it.”  Then the One Who can, does.  It’s a promise. Amen?  Amen!

Matt. 6:25-31 (NIV)

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?  28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Jer. 29:11 (NIV)

11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
