The Deer on the Hill (and Carols At The Capitol)

Lord, we come to adore You
Lord, we come to adore You, Victor Savior and King.  Heavenly host declared Your coming.  We gather today to sing.  We declare who You are. Every promise is true. We rejoice in what You have said, in who You have been and will always be. Heavenly King, we adore You. Yes, forever.

The date was Saturday, December 14, 2013: the first Carols At The Capitol gathering. I had spent the night at our Placerville home to be closer to the state capitol, Sacramento. The Lord called me out on a walk shortly after dawn. The air was cold, frost covered the little valley like a light blanket of snow. It was spectacular. The path crunched under my feet. Ice decorated the leaves on nearby blackberry vines like lace. I watched as the flock of swans rose from the reservoir on their daily flight around the area, the newly risen sun tinging their wings with cream-colored gold. At the conclusion of the walk just before I went back inside, the Lord prompted me to turn around one last time at the back garden gate. He nudged me to point my camera up the adjacent hill. I thought it was to be positioned to take a photo of the still rising sun through the trees. However, at the moment my camera was in place, a doe came forward on the slope above and into view. Her warm breath condensed into puffs like steam as it came forth from her nostrils. We stood staring at each other.

In that moment I realized that though December 14, 2013 was Carols At The Capitol to me, to the Lord’s creation it was just another day—and this was a good thing, it was a God-thing. We place varying degrees of importance and value on different days. To the Lord they are all of equal important—of great importance. Each is to be savored and simply lived trusting Him and thus in His peace.

There was some nervousness which accompanied the first Carols At The Capitol. All we wanted was the Lord’s will and we had worked so hard to create what we hoped He wanted. Would anyone come? Would it be what He had wanted? Had we heard Him correctly?

The deer on the hill. The swans in morning flight. Blackberry leaves frosted with frozen lace. An inner sigh.

There was no pressure in this day. There was to be no pressure in any day. It didn’t matter if anyone else came. It was His will for us to be there. And so we would be. Period. We would make our imperfect, childlike offering of Christmas worship on the steps of the state capitol. To our Lord this would be like any other day. He was simply looking if we would obey.

He had asked for us to simply come and offer Christmas carols as worship—to come seeking Him like the Wise Men. No more. No less. Simply….Simply that. Simply worship. Simply joy. Simply peace. All from Him as we did it for Him.

There was no concern or pressure necessary. It was simply our task for the day.  His task. It was to be bliss, not worry in every regard.

If we just came and offered the Christmas carols as worship, as He had seemed to be asking, He would bless it according to His promises. As He had promised my friend (and Founder of Carols At The Capitol), Andrea, if we would worship Him with Christmas carols at the seat of human government, entering the gate into the courts of the highest place in the state, then He would bring us a righteous leader. Was it righteous leader or was it the Righteous One as our Leader?

Recently, in discussion with Andrea’s daughter, Alanna, it has seemed clear He meant if we would simply go seeking Him like the Wise Men and make our offering of Christmas worship, then He would inhabit our land with more of Himself because by our worship we would be welcoming Him (inviting Him to have His way with us no matter who was in government).

Today, we gather again at state capitols to sing Christmas carols as worship to Him with one voice–not only in California, but in other states as well. Andrea worships from heaven, already in the presence of our King. We come seeking this true King, whose Kingdom is not of this world. We come to adore Him, to acknowledge Him as our true Leader, to give Him our hearts and our lives, pledging allegiance to Him by acknowledging what He has done and will do. Christmas carols. Christmas worship. Simply. Our hearts full and overflowing with joy because He came, lived, died, rose and is coming again.

Christmas was the beginning of the fulfillment of all His promises. We begin with Christmas worship to invite Him to be the Righteous Leader over all of us again, and to sovereignly influence the minds of those who govern to rule His way in love, fairness and justice.

All creation is constantly declaring His glory. All the time. Every day.  No matter what.

We join creation and sing. Christmas worship. We declare Him with hearts filled with joy. And we thank Him for another day to declare Him and live in His perfect provision and care until our days here are done and He takes us home.

Prophetic Word: Give Me Your Hand

Wonderful One, all I want and all I need is to take your hand. You lead from darkness into Your light. You restore. You heal. All I want and all that I need is Your way. You promise to bring mountains down and raise valleys up so that there is a level place where I can stand and take your hand and move forward into all that You have for me. My heart is rejoicing. Yes, Lord, here is my hand. Lead me.

Yes, Lord, here is my hand. Lead me.

This is what is called a prophetic word.  I hear it as if the words are being spoken into my mind and write it down as I “hear” it.  Please always pray before and as you read.  By definition I am human and imperfect.  In addition, when the Holy Spirit “downloads” a word, it will either resonate with you or it will not and that’s okay.  No one prophetic word is for every person.  And this is my prayer for you: ”LORD, please lead each reader perfectly and cause them to receive and remember, only that which is from You for them.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.” ~ Elizabeth

Give Me your hand and I will lead you. I have so much to show you. I want to reveal more of Myself to you and My Way. I want to love you more. I want to use you more. But the love comes first. I want to heal you. My love heals. This is the greatest aspect of My power which is all love.

I give life now and I give LIFE forever and I heal and restore. Fallen one, it is I who lift you up. How do you expect to pick yourself up if you do not take My hand? How will the world see Me and come to k now Me if it is not through you?

I know you are broken. This world is not kind, but I am. The world’s ways are not my ways. Climbing over each other for power, vying for greatness defined by invisible accolades from the masses. Who are they anyway, that they should value you?

You are Mine. You have always been Mine whether you choose to recognize Me or not.

There are opinions of you which have no true hold on you. They will pass away. Their opinions won’t matter.

Yet, I AM. I have always been and I will always be. No matter what others say or do to you in the end it all loses its power. It does not last. I alone reign. I am eternal and eternal life is with Me alone. My way—how I have ordained things to be will always be. I AM He and there is no other.

Will you take My hand? Will you believe Me? Will you choose to see your life and yourself the way I see you and be free? That which holds you captive is not from Me.

How I long to free you from it. It will take time. It is a process. You need a new way of thinking and of seeing.

I will help you. Will you take My hand?

I am all good. I am gentle. I will help you. I will lead you. As I lead you I will heal you, wounded one. Do you know? Can you see? Through my wounds I have restored and redeemed the world. This is the full, complete healing—to eternity with Me!

By My wounds. Because I suffered. My wounds were inflicted by the evil one who desires to reign, pretends to reign, yet from an eternal perspective is already defeated.

By your wounds—through your wounds, I desire to heal others.

Do not be mistaken. I do not delight in your wounds. It is not from Me that you hurt. I have wept as they hurt you and how I long to hold you yet closer in My eternal arms of love, to comfort you and let My love be a balm, a bandage and a miracle, which restores to you all I have meant you to be.

You are My beautiful one, My handsome one, and I long to finally usher in full justice for you.

And yet, and yet, My way is so superior, so supreme that even in the hard, ugly places of this worldly temporal life I will use all things for eternal good in the lives of those I have called and I have called all.

Will you hear Me? Will you come? Will you let Me be in You and heal you? Will you let Me flow through your wounds to bring My healing to others even as I heal you?

I have purpose for you. It is great. It will be one of refreshing and joy to you.

Listen. I am calling. Will you take My hand? Don’t let go for I desire to lead you.

I can. I will. I AM.  Give Me your hand.  It is a choice. Will you do it?

Will We Join Creation and Give Him Glory?

Magnificent One, You reign. There is none like You. We know full well that we are the works of Your hands. We delight in You. We delight to do Your will and through every storm continue to sing Your praises and give You all glory for we know who You are and our trust is in You. You do not disappoint for as we declared to You in the beginning, indeed You reign. In Jesus' name, Amen

11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it.  12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. (Ps. 96:11-12)

7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it,  the world, and all who live in it. 8 Let the rivers clap their hands,  let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth. (Ps. 98:7-9)

23 Sing for joy, you heavens, for the Lord has done this; shout aloud, you earth beneath.  Burst into song, you mountains, you forests and all your trees, for the Lord has redeemed Jacob, he displays his glory in Israel. (Isa. 44:23)

1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. 3 They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.  (Ps. 19:1-3)

You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. (Isa. 55:12)

7 Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. 8 I cling to you; your right hand upholds me. (Ps. 63:7-8)

17 The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.  He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. (Zeph. 3:17)

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. (Ps. 28:7)

16 But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.  17 You are my strength, I sing praise to you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely. (Psalm 59:16-17)

All creation declares the glory of God. Vibrating with essence of Him which created it, creation reverberates back to Him the fact that in Him all creation lives, moves and has its being.

We are the only part of creation who can choose to declare His glory—to acknowledge His place in our lives and honor Him in it—or not.  We are the only ones who can choose whether or not to be in His will—to be aligned with Him and what He desires to do in us and through us.

Oh, His place in our lives does not change when we choose to deny Him or ignore Him.  However, He cannot work as effectively through us or bless us bringing goodness into our lives here and now as well as eternity when we do not give Him the place which He already has (He owns it).

In Him, by Him and through Him we also live, move and have our being.  Without His will and power to complete it there is no life or LIFE for us.  We choose.  Today, will we declare His glory?  Or not?

To declare Him can be done with words, but not necessarily. Actually often words are less effective than simply how we choose to life for and by Him. This is not necessarily focusing on the “thou shalt not’s”, as much as living in the recognized victory of the cross.

Translated out of “Christian-ese”, this means we know God is real. We know heaven is our forever home. We understand through Jesus death is no longer the end. We are freed from the world’s way of seeing ourselves, life and others. We are working to gain the Lord’s perspective.  As we understand His eternal way more, we come to rest in who He is and what He promises. We receive His gifts of peace, love and even joy, which as we grow, we suddenly cannot stop from flowing through us to others.  We find our purpose–our life’s purpose now through eternity.

Truly, we have our place in society where we work. However, our purpose is deeper and greater than just this temporal work in a temporal world.  Our purpose is to be the reflection of Him in that place by our gazing at Him and letting His Holy Spirit work through us wherever this life takes us. His goal is that more will see Him.

We do not necessarily preach.  We keep our eyes on Him, listen and obey. He does the rest. Through this He is glorified!  This means people see Him instead of us because when we obey He as supernatural God causes things to happen which cannot be explained and cause the hearts of those around us to begin healing with His comfort and truth even as they sense an unfamiliar wonderful inner peace they do not understand and the first inklings of true joy. And if they ask, we can share the present hope and hope for the future we have found in Jesus, the Father and Holy Spirit for every aspect of our life, now and forever.

What will you choose? Who will you trust?  Can you do it on your own or will you acknowledge your need for Him to be there for you?  Remember, He is whether you acknowledge Him or not. But when you do—He gets the glory. When you live for Him, through how we are in Him, with Him and through Him we are declaring His glory—sometimes most effectively with no words at all.  We are joining with creation and singing high praise to the One we desire and who desires us.

This is the Kingdom of God perfect harmony constantly going forth and stretching from here to eternity which He has created where He sings over us as our Creator, Father and the One Who loves us and we and the rest of His creation sing back to Him.  It is exquisitely beautiful. It is the rhythm of heaven come to earth and earth reaching up to heaven. We get to choose to be part of it!  Isn’t His Way is magnificent?!

PSALM 92:

1 Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.  2 Sing to the Lord, praise his name;  proclaim his salvation day after day.  3 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.  4 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.  5 For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. 6 Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and glory are in his sanctuary.  7 Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.  8 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come into his courts. 9 Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth.  10  Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.”  The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity. 11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. 12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;  let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.  13 Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth.  He will judge the world in righteousness  and the peoples in his faithfulness.

PSALM 65:

1 Praise awaits you, our God, in Zion; to you our vows will be fulfilled.  2 You who answer prayer, to you all people will come. 3 When we were overwhelmed by sins, you forgave our transgressions. 4 Blessed are those you choose and bring near to live in your courts! We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple. 5 You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds, God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, 6 who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength, 7 who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations. 8 The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy. 9 You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it. 10 You drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops. 11 You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance. 12 The grasslands of the wilderness overflow; the hills are clothed with gladness. 13 The meadows are covered with flocks and the valleys are mantled with grain; they shout for joy and sing.

There is Enough Time For His “Enough”

Holy magnificent God, You reign. Mighty and awesome Your plans are superior to ours and only Your plans bring Your result. Lord God, we no longer want our plans but only Yours. Holy Spirit, we lay down our will. Lead us and guide us. Usher us into Your life, LIFE everlasting and peace. Our trust is in You. Our wholeness is in You. All life is in You. Teach us to hear Your voice. We long to follow. In Jesus' name, Amen

Easy does it. Are you in a rush? Is there more to be done than time to do it? Stop. Pause. Breathe. Listen. Yes, there will always be more to be done than time to do it. Such is life. However, what does our Lord want you to do? Jesus never rushed anywhere. He stayed perfectly in Father’s will only doing what the Father told Him to do. In this way, by setting a side His own will, His life was a perfect reflection of Father. We could see Father in it—in Him!

We will never be the perfect reflection of Father God. But we are to be followers of Jesus, thus setting aside our own will to do the will of God (empowered then by Him for His effect) that others might get a glimpse of Him through us.

And….Jesus never rushed anywhere. He never ran to get there faster. He walked.

Consider when He received word that Jairus’ daughter was dying and chose to accompany Jairus to go to her in order to heal her. In the intense urgency of the moment, Jesus stopped to deal with the woman who had had a problem with bleeding for 12 years. He did not say, “I’ll be back. Wait for me here.”, or “Not today. Try me another time.” He did not dismiss her or only give her a trite greeting. He was present to her in the most formidable, transformative way! While he was present to her word came that it was too late. Jairus’ daughter was already dead. However, Jesus had been in the Lord’s will not to rush and in Father’s will not to make it to Jairus’ daughter seemingly in time. The purpose of the miracles of Jesus was to reveal God the Father and the coming of the already-here, but not-yet-fully-manifested Kingdom of God.   The will of Father was for the greater temporal miracle of raising her from the dead.

Jesus did not get caught up in hectic. He did not run to get there faster or get more done. He simply did what the Father told Him to do and He was only in ministry 3 short years. Yet….according to what Father wanted, Jesus completely finished the work. He came with a global ministry. He never left the Middle East. He never even fully travelled around the Middle East. None of us would dispute that Father’s work was accomplished.

Hmmmm….We are to be followers of Jesus, so what about us? On the streaming, seemingly unending list of to do’s, He knows what you actually need to do in what order because He knows the actual consequences of each and what He wants to accomplish through it. No one else does. There is only One who knows the future and so He knows the present and where your priorities need to be for His glory manifesting in your life.

Dare to listen interiorly for His soft, quiet, gentle voice. Dare to trust and obey, doing the step HE lays before you in this moment, letting the rest go—for now. He may bring it back as a task for later.

Come to rest in His enough. Receive the peace, contentment and unabashed wonder of simply doing that which He lays on your heart as He does so. His plan is perfectly enough.

” For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.”  (John 6:38 NIV)

21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. 22 Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him.

A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.

30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’

32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”

36 Overhearing[c] what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40 But they laughed at him.

After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat  (Mark 5:21-43 NIV)

Thoughts on Healing

Lord, You offer us the door from here to eternity. We do not want to cross over a moment before it is Your timing, for we have one another here and You created us to love. And yet, we do not want to lose sight of Your greatest gift--our healing from here to eternity. Lord God, by Your grace help us to keep our eyes on You, help us to stand in the gap for healing for those for whom You have ordained more time here and to gentle walk those whose time has come to Your door where You call to them as You did to St. John: "Come up!" How blessed we are that You love us infinitely and fully, providing for us in every way from here through eternity. We adore You our Savior, Redeemer, Healer and Lord!!! In Jesus' name, Amen

November 1st All Saints Day is celebrated. It causes me to think of all those who like us have been imperfect and yet never gave up persevering to follow our Lord more. It reminds me of heaven and the blessings of eternity which await. It brings to mind those I have loved who are already there and those I know who are preparing to be there soon. And so come thoughts reflecting on our Lord–Jehovah Rapha our Healer and the immense gift of His healing now and in eternity.  God bless you! ~ Elizabeth

There are different types of healing from the same Lord God. All healing, whether people recognize it, is by the power of God flowing into our world through the conduit of the Holy Spirit, enabled by the spilling of His own blood by Jesus as He submitted to the ultimate injustice of the cross.  Sometimes healing is for more time here.  Sometimes it is the ultimate healing, the ultimate rescue from here – for eternity.

Too long have we as Christians continued to fear death when that is the ultimate bondage from which we are freed because of Jesus.  It is why He came.

True, Jesus performed miracles while he walked the earth. Yes, He tells us that we will usher in greater miracles than these. Yet to some extent we have lost sight of the greatest miracle of all–the gift of reinstated relationship with Him, of adoption as His children and entrance even now into His eternal Kingdom.

Eternal.  No more suffering. No more pain. No injustice.  No difficulties. Celebrations. Joy. Ultimate love. Engulfed by it.  In His presence.

This is our inheritance.   This is the ultimate gift of Christ and why He came. All else is indescribably less–hugely, monstrously–to the point it can be dangerous to hang onto here so fiercely as our focus.  Is that our call as followers of the eternal, all-good Lord? Hmmm…

This does  not mean we can’t enjoy here. He made it to enjoy. There is so much beauty.  And these are His gifts to us.

It does not mean we do not have a destiny here. We do.  He does have plans to use us to flow to touch the world His way until the day He calls us home.  We have good work to do here no matter what our circumstances! And, and, and beyond all that we are aware of here, our true destiny is eternal.  It is His ultimate gift. It is the ultimate source of supreme joy.

Yes.  there is grief when someone graduates or goes home to eternity with Him in heaven.  He made us to love. He made us to be with others.  Each of us are individual and none of us are replaceable. This means we will suffer the loss of the ones we love–those who go on ahead of us until we are reunited.  Sorrow is a part of this exile in which we dwell and serve Him until He sovereignly opens the gate to heaven for us and sets us finally free.

To fix our eyes on Jesus and be His effective witnesses–witnesses of the Truth–we need to keep our eyes on what is to come in addition to what is here.  And we need to praise Him for whatever is His perfect will.  Whatever it is, it is all, all, all for His glory.  People will be blessed. They will find their way home. We will be together forever in heaven.  We are on our way.  We are journeying there and He alone is leading.

Healing….we pray for now! We pray for Him to heal us temporally yet in this life. And we pray for the complete, ultimate healing unto LIFE everlasting which each will need when His appointed day has come. (Every person Jesus healed temporally when He walked this earth ultimately died. They are still dead unless they chose Jesus as their Savior, Lord and Way.)

Thus with the same fervency we pray for more life, let us also pray for LIFE eternal.  Let us also look forward with great expectation, anticipation and delight to eternity.   Heaven is our home.  With Him forever is the gift.  It is the ultimate healing that we all await.  Let’s not miss it.

The Power of Choosing Worship

Lord, You are the Light in our Darkness. You are the dawn which illumines our Way. You are the strength by which every mountain in this life is climbed and from this place and every place we choose to adore You. Thank You for who You are. Thank You for Your promises which never fail. Thank You for Your love and that You are our one and only God and Lord. In Jesus' name, Amen

Since the Lord asks us to worship Him—to adore Him now on earth as is happening in heaven—and He promises to respond to mightily in return, perhaps practicing turning worry into worship would help us. What is it which concerns you? What is it that you are fervently praying for?  How could you take this heavy duty prayer request and rephrase it into worship which acknowledges you know the Lord is aware, in control and You trust Him for His result?

For example, for parents–say you are worried about your child.  Yes, He asks us to pray so He welcomes your prayers, “Lord, help.  Help with this child. Help him or her to…..”  AND, we can rephrase this as worship and honor Him as in-charge, all-powerful Lord and Shepherd who sees and goes after every lost sheep as a promise not a “maybe”.  So….how could we rephrase it.  “Lord, thank You for Your sovereignty in all things. Thank You that You love xxxx more than I do. Lord God, how amazing You are.  You are the good Shepherd.  You look after every sheep.  You do not lose even one and I know I can trust You to look after xxxx. How blessed to be able to rest in Your promises because You are faithful. I look with great anticipation to the result You will bring and will worship You and partner with you in prayer until it is done.”

Another example, when we are afraid.  Again, He welcomes our prayers. “Lord, help. Lord, something is not right. Lord, I am afraid this or that is going to happen. Lord, fix it please. Fix it please!  Lord, don’t let this or that happen.  Lord, fix it!”  AND, we can rephrase this into worship, such as: “Lord, You know this is afoot.  You know what could happen. Holy One, You are almighty. It is in You alone I trust. I trust in Your power, Your love and Your sovereignty. I trust in Your promise to use all things for good in light of Your eternal plans for all of us.  Lord God, because You are faithful, I choose (and this is hard) to lay down my will and entrust this situation to You.  You know my heart!!!  Lord God, You will bring the best result.  And in trust and adoration I thank You before I can see it.  Magnificent One, You reign.”

Any and all prayer requests can be rephrased into worshipful declarations. We are strengthened by them because it writes the Truth of who He is on our hearts and we are strengthened by this.  There will be storms in this life and so this helps us stand strong on the Rock of who He is as our unshakeable foundation so that we are not carried away by the wind and waves of life.

Even more importantly, our Lord is given the glory (the credit) and thus the honor He is due for the place He does hold in our lives.  This is not a place He has because we give it to Him (though He is honored through this). It is a place He has period. We choose whether to honor Him in this place or not.

It takes practice.  It begins with being aware of what we are thinking–what is running around as worry or concern in our minds—taking hold of these thoughts and actively putting them up against the truth of Christ.  St. Paul writes about this as taking our thoughts captive to Christ in his second letter to the Corinthians:

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.  (2 Cor. 10:4-6 NIV)

What are we thinking? What does the Lord promise? When we rephrase our thoughts to focus on His promises, our worries become worship.  He is honored and given the credit He is due (which is part of our purpose while we are still living in this world, though  no longer of is) and He responds with a release of His power in His timing always, always, always in ways which exceed our human expectations. He is almighty. His ways are eternal. He does not fail. His word returns victorious to Him.

11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.  (Eph. 1:11-12)

By His magnificent promised response to our worship, we are blessed and the work of His kingdom is furthered in us personally and the world around us. Yes, the power of worship is the power of His promised response.  We can rest in it (and rejoice!)

It’s time for a cancer progress check-in. First the practical, then a reflection on God and His mysterious, wonderful way.

When last I wrote, the May 2015 ultrasound and scan (which were in the hopes of declaring my body cancer-free) showed some type of slight illumination on the scan which was not confirmed by the ultrasound. In other words, there was iodine uptake of some sort or a false positive of iodine uptake the neck and thyroid area, representing the scan detected some bit of thyroid tissue or thyroid cancer remaining. To be cancer-free the scan should have been completely dark. However, the ultrasound, which was to reveal potential masses growing where there should be nothing growing, indeed revealed nothing. So the ultrasound was terrific to which the scan added a question mark. Thus they could not say, “cancer-free” because they could not be sure. Perhaps there was something still there which was not yet large enough for the ultrasound to detect. Perhaps it would grow enough to be detected. Perhaps the scan had been a false positive of iodine uptake and there was nothing going on there at all. Perhaps….

The end result was a decision by the endocrinologist who oversees my care for me to have ultrasounds on the thyroid/neck area every few months to see if anything had grown enough to now be visible on the ultrasound or to gradually ultrasound by ultrasound confirm that actually no hidden cancer is growing there at all.

August 2015 was the first of these ultrasounds and indeed there was nothing there at all. So in January or February 2016 back to the blood draw and ultrasound I will be sent to do it all one more time. Meanwhile I have complete peace. Nothing in this life is sure except that eventually none of us are getting out of here alive so I have moved on. God knows the number of my days and I’m good with that.

However, I am grateful to God that in His grace He has seen fit to continue to provide vocal recovery—a recovery through recuperative, rehabilitation efforts by multiple experts, which now seems as if it will deliver an eventual result which enables me to have a stronger singing and speaking voice than ever before. I am abundantly grateful! For without the Lord showing me the way to Dr. Krzysztof Izdebski, who then has overseen my care with the others (notably Lucy Beck and Amy Lesico), there would have been no recovery. And while the ability or inability to talk easily or sing at all does not define quality of life, it is a gift to be able to use my voice!!! Though not fully restored yet and though for some unknown reason it is still painful to create sound vocally, my speaking voice finally has times when it sounds “normal” to me and like it used to be and I am beginning oh-so-slowly, but firmly (thankfully and joyously) to sing again. Oh how I have missed it!

For years I have used my voice almost exclusively to praise the Lord I love. It was something I truly took for granted for it was so easy. I simply opened my mouth whenever I willed it and song came forth. After six months where my post-surgery singing range was 3 tones (do-ray-mi-ack!!! no more sound!!!), and following over 9 months of active, daily vocal-therapy-specific exercises for improvement overseen by these wonderful people in whose care the Lord has placed me, what a gift to be able to do this again!

It gives me profound joy to announce that as of July 24, 2015 I returned to The Creation Lab in Turlock, CA to begin recording the lead vocals for the upcoming worship CD, “You’re My Healer”. This was my first time back to the recording studio since the same week in July exactly one year prior in order to make sure I completed recording the background harmony vocals for the “Christmas Bells Call to Worship” worship CD (released December 2014) in case I could not sing following the August 13th surgery—which I could not.

The Lord’s plan is awe-inspiring on so many levels. Though the cancer had been growing silently for a number of years, it was found and diagnosed in mid-July 2014.  A year earlier in August 2013 as I was in the studio with Michael Everett, Mark Davis and Brandon Davis laying the initial tracks for my second CD of mostly original Christmas worship songs (“Christmas Bells Call To Worship”), the Holy Spirit nudged me firmly to talk with Mike about booking the studio for February 2014 to begin recording another new full length worship project of original songs, but this time it would be songs with which those who were seeking healing from the Lord could worship Him. Interiorly I was thrilled the Lord was asking me to do this because the February dates marked the 10th anniversary of my friends Andrea, Lori and Nicole praying over me to begin hearing new worship songs from heaven during our Bible study worship time in February 2004 as well as the day after their prayers when I “heard” the first new song. What an incredible, truly God-given way to commemorate the event!

Of course, I obeyed, booked the studio and began listening for His new melodies and lyrics in late 2013 for this new healing worship project.  Along the way I did mention to the Lord how aware I was that He was asking me to write lyrics for something I had never experienced myself. Certainly, I had been ill before. But since coming back to faith in Christ as Savior and Lord over 20 years before, I had not had to endure an illness which required me to lean on Him for His healing.

The timing of the scheduled initial recording of the songs in February 2014 became even more impactful when my close, close friend Andrea was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer on January 14, 2014 exactly one month following the first Carols at the Capitol event which she had obediently put on in response to an assignment from the Lord. I knew and know here is not our final home, but only a place of temporary fallible living (and eventual physical death). However, Andrea’s diagnosis and prognosis was so close to the February 2014 recording date, that it definitely effected how I listened for His lyrics and caused me to select certain songs I had composed earlier to be added to the “You’re My Healer” project.

Indeed, in a way only the Lord could have orchestrated, in February 2014 we laid the initial tracks of a few basic instruments for all the songs for “You’re My Healer”. However, after this strong start, progress on “You’re My Healer” stopped. This was not our lack of focus, but the Lord’s plan.  I did not know it then, but He did not want me to have time the remainder of spring 2014 to work on singing my final vocals for the project. He already knew I had cancer and would be officially beginning my own healing journey by mid-year. The singing of these songs was to be during my own journey.  However, He had wanted the music ready.

Is it not amazing as my voice now slowly has been recovering, that these songs are already prepared musically, just waiting for me to vocally recover enough to sing them in the studio? Is it not beyond belief that He has ordained my voice to be added to this worship project while it is still recovering when this project exists to accompany others on their own healing journey as they seek to lean on God through it? Only our Lord could have set this up. Who knows all and thinks this way but Him?! Wonder of wonders!

Especially the first few times in the studio starting in July 2015 it was excruciatingly hard. I drove the 1.5 hours each way sometimes to do one song each time. It was hard to sing, hard to move from pitch to pitch and hard to form the sounds required for each of the lyric’s words. Certain consonants and vowels were still quite difficult.

Though standing behind the microphone to record is always humbling and one has to fight a fear of inadequacy or insufficiency, these times it was intensely more than ever before. And the sound which came out was not exactly as I would have wished! However, I knew this was how my Lord wanted His music done—singing through my healing for those seeking healing to join in.  As always, I prayed both before we began and interiorly as I was offering Him the worship songs one by one into the microphone.

These were His songs, which He had given me to sing. Like all the other worship projects which have preceded “You’re My Healer”, this one was also His not mine and I knew what He enabled me to do would be sufficient for His purposes. He had told me clearly it was time to begin singing again. I had obeyed. I trusted Him. My singular request on all of my worship projects is not that people would experience my voice, but that through my obedience to His call for me to release these songs, that He would imbue the songs with the power of His Holy Spirit so that all who listened and sang along would be touched by Him in the way they each needed to grow closer to Him day by day. It was my prayer for this one too. JOY!

In addition, I was once again blessed by Michael Everett, who in his role as producer was oh-so-gentle with me, working with me in the short bursts of singing stamina I had to make the recording of the songs as easy on me as possible.

As of September 25, 2015 the final lead vocals for all 11 songs have been completed. There remain only two harmonies each to add to the last six songs and my work on this project is done. God is so good! He has been so immeasurably kind to me! His provision of this healing has bordered on miraculous because it didn’t have to go this way.

In addition because of what I experienced in the first weeks following the 2014 cancer surgery, there will be another new worship project produced in the next month. It will be an improvisational piano-only worship CD of original music called, “Worship When Words Are Too Much”.

Directly following surgery, I tried to listen to worship music and offer the lyrics heavenward as I always, always do. However, following the cancer surgery this was more than I could mentally accomplish. My body required so much energy directed towards the immense physical recovery that there was no mental energy left with which to engage with the words. In fact, the lyrics made it so I couldn’t listen to the music because the message of the words automatically began to draw me in, but it was simply too much for me. Thus as I began to recover (and during that time I could not sing at all), He began to give me little melody lines which have developed into worship music where the offering is music only with no words. Each song has a theme—a basic worshipful thought behind it which I contemplate as I play the song instrumentally. For instance for one the theme is “His peace”, for another “trust”, for another “at rest in Him”, etc. My prayer is that since all this is done in obedience to His promptings that His Spirit would be on this new music so it would touch those who hear it His way to accomplish His healing, restoring purposes in them (as only He can.)

Both these music projects will be available latest February 2016, the 10th anniversary of stepping out in faith and beginning to record original worship music in accordance with the Holy Spirit’s instruction with Michael Everett at The Creation Lab in February 2006. Wow….what an amazing journey.

Meanwhile I continue seeing Dr. Krzysztof Izdebski and Lucy Beck, two specialists who continue to guide me toward fuller and more complete vocal restoration. They are kind to me. They are patient with me. They guide me expertly, willingly using their God-given gifts to help me and help others. When I could find no help, the Lord led me specifically to them. For Dr. Krzysztof Izdebski, Lucy Beck and Amy Lesico (who helped me for months with speech), I am grateful beyond what any human words can express—both to the Lord God who gave me the gift of connection with Dr. Izdebski and for how the Lord has used him and those to whom he has referred me for vocal song and speech therapy to enable my recovery (a recovery which would not have just happened on its own). There would be no good speech or song from my voice if they were not willing to do the work the Lord has given them!

I am also profoundly grateful to the Lord God, who in His plan decided to allow me to suffer a cancer which is curable. I know my eternal destiny. I am confident in it. I know here is not God’s long-term best for me. Yet, I do so love serving Him here and for the moment He has granted me more time to do this. (He knows at what instant—any instant—when my time here is done.) So I am thankful for now, for this moment, and at rest in how His way from here to eternity works.

Yet through this cancer journey our magnificent Lord God also has affirmed yet another aspect of His often incomprehensible way. Our Lord most definitely uses us for His kingdom work wherever this life takes us. Wherever!  And I am thankful!

It is not only how He takes what the enemy means for evil and uses it for good, but how He uses it for His more. He makes out of the ugliest places an assignment –a God assignment—which is part of furthering His kingdom and making it known on earth as in heaven. He uses our most undesirable circumstances out of which to write a God-story, raising beauty from ashes and anointing the heads of many with His oil of joy and gifts of salvation and abundant inner peace, all from an increasing knowing from the inside out of who and how He is.

Therefore wherever life takes us (and we know this will include suffering, unfairness, evil, hate and injustice because this is earth where Satan rules, not heaven), becomes a critical part of accomplishing His Great Commission, that He would be revealed to all people and every individual would have the opportunity to see Him and begin to know Him as both Savior and Lord.   There are also God-assignments which take us into trenches where despite the hardships we personally endure, He can flow through us to be His triage unit and safe place for recuperation and strengthening for all those who have been wounded (which includes every one.) It is when we are on these God assignments, which He has made of the hard places and spiritual battlefields which take us places which we would never have chosen for ourselves, that He uses us to spread the fragrance of His truth (by the power of His Holy Spirit) which contrasts so sharply with the stench of the wisdom of this world.

There are those who are seeking Him even if they do not yet even know His name. Inherently interiorly they know there is more for us in life than is apparent even though they don’t know what (who) it is and how to find it. It is God they seek because He created us for this intimate connection with Him. We are incomplete without it—without HIM—and deep down inside we recognize the lack.

There is an intrinsic incompleteness, a discontent and dissatisfaction until we find our fulfillment in adopted sonship and daughtership in Him, restored to the place in His eternal kingdom for which He created us. This is an aspect of the darkness our Lord speaks about and how He is the Light of the world.

He is the Truth. Looking but not knowing how to find Him or having begun to know Him yet not knowing how to pursue the fullness of relationship with Him—this is the darkness, sadness, depression, discouragement and lack of hope into which Jesus came and into which the Holy Spirit still desires to come to others working through us.

Thus sometimes the places we have to go in life are dark. We do not want to be there. We wish we could be somewhere else. And yes, often these hard places are an aspect of this fallen world and not at all like the heaven He has planned for us. It feels more like the desert wilderness than the Promised Land.

Yet, He is with us there too and we must be attentive to the assignment He has for us there. We are not the Light of the world. But we are lamps He has made to carry His Light into the dark places—the truth about life now, life eternal, God in it and through it and the living and active Holy Spirit here with us now with His gifts of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control.

Like in Isaiah, our Lord is calling—whom shall I send! He is looking for response: “Send me.” How will they see His Light if we don’t go on or if we are filled with so much fear and despair that He Himself must send those to help us and we are incapable of being used by Him to be His love, truth and comfort to others?

Rarely is it so one-sided. Usually we have times of both: times where He can flow through us because our trust in Him is strong and times of being utterly human where we forget He is there using us there and that we have a hope and a future promised (a good one) even if that promise is heaven sooner than we thought we wanted.

Our hope—the hope of Jesus—is that death is no longer the end. It is in this promise we rejoice. It is in this promise we can stand strong in the storm which seems to envelope us in darkness and tries to steal what we thought we had. Our Lord is the Light to our future. Nothing and no one can steal this destiny. When we grasp this by His grace and choose to rely on it, the Holy Spirit can flow through us as the river of Life that He is, especially in the dark and dry places, to touch the world.

On a very practical note, in my own journey into the dark places of cancer eradication and recovery where I continue to pray to be His light, there have been many wonderful, caring, self-less prayer warriors (family, friends and others where sometimes we have not yet even met face-to-face—you know who you are!!!) who have been oh-so faithfully with me by His Spirit the whole time covering me in prayer. I am grateful beyond ability to adequately express it. Such selfless giving to pray for another! I can never pay you back. Thank you so very, very, very much for praying for me so faithfully all this time!

As you can see, I am here to formally report your prayers are answered and better than you may have been able to imagine. He did not answer your prayers for immediate, instant, complete healing. It has been oh-so-gradual and therein lies the last point for which I am thankful because the gradual healing has been the greater blessing.

There are multiple aspects to this. He has taught me to enjoy the quiet even more than before through the months of inability to speak in most situations. He has taught me that often fewer words need to be spoken. He has allowed me to clearly hear the difference between chatter and what my grandmother called, “good talk”.

However the most powerful aspect of the blessing of gradual healing over immediate healing is that through it He has graced me to come to know individuals whom I never would have met (because I never would have needed to ask the Lord to help me find them). Between us, we have been blessed to pour into each others’ lives in incredible, indelible ways. I never would have known these individuals who are literal gifts to me and for whom I now pray daily. My life would have been less without them. They have made my life richer and I would not have wanted to miss knowing them. Oh the wonder of His magnificent ways from here until the day He finally calls each of us home.  His way is perfect. I am grateful. Let’s rejoice!

Selah!

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it…The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. (John 1:1-5,9-13)

16 the people living in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.  (Matt. 4:16)

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. (Matt. 5:14-15)

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”  (Isa. 6:8)
