Excerpt 1 ~ TRUTH: Spiritual Manual for Battle

Truth: Spiritual Manual for Battleby Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro © 2018

As shared in a recent post, for 3 months in 2017, the Lord had me sit intensely in prayer with Him, listen, and write out a book which had been on my mind and heart since early 2006.  Finally, finally, He was giving me the words to express for you what I believed He had been showing me about Himself and worship. It was and is for military to gain more situational awareness about the invisible, supernatural spiritual battle ongoing around us at all times, but it is also for you–because all of us find ourselves immersed in this spiritual battle.  TRUTH: Spiritual Manual for Battle has been published and is available on amazon.com. However, He has also laid on my heart to publish periodic excerpts here, so you can begin to read a bit (if you so desire).  This post starts the process. PLEASE REMEMBER and respect, that this material is under copyright and is not for use or reproduction in whole or in part in any way without permission. Email address for contact is at the end of the post.

Let’s begin with prayer: LORD GOD, Most High Ruler over all. You desire to be known. And You desire us to understand the principles by which You operate, so that even in the midst of life’s worst, we can experience thriving in You and because of You. Guide us now. Guide each reader. Bring the ones for whom this excerpt is for and speak to them interiorly what information is specifically for each one and move in them to recognize what they are to do with it. You are greater than we can imagine. Help us to gain a greater grasp of You and the over-riding, supernatural spiritual dimension which is around us at work at all times. Help us be cognizant of You as well as the other side and to learn to wield well the sword of Truth which helps us to stand strong in life’s battles and persevere until Your victory. Your ultimate victory is eternal. Your gift: unending life with You. A healing and destiny no evil can steal away. Lead us, Lord. Guide each one specifically into the more You have for Him or her. In Your mighty and precious name, Amen

Excerpt 2 – “Introduction”

There is power (“pow”) with which God promises to respond when we choose to worship Him. Sounds unbelievable, but its true–based on irrefutable principles.  That’s “pow” as in superhero, where you partner with God in your battles for His one-two, knowck-out punch for your adversaries (both visible and invisible.)  Read on and learn what, why and how. If you dare, it could change your life in indescribably positive ways…forever.

What if I were to tell you that there is a wisdom greater and higher than what people have taught you that catapults you into a supernatural realm where true life and purpose are found? There God is waiting to provide His protection, provision and direction for your life now through forever. And it’s better than you think.

This booklet is specifically for deployed military and those who love them. It presents a perspective on your military mission and your life. Please take it or leave it. But before you decide, maybe just read it and see what you think. Throughout, you will come to understand why this Worship Toolkit (gift bag) has been sent to you.

Let’s begin with some background. When I finish, you may have decided I’m just crazy. But I beg you to consider, what if I’m not?

First, even though you don’t know me, I’ve been praying for you and holding you (and those who are important to you) in my heart since the terrorist attacks on NYC and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. It doesn’t matter if you were in the military already then or not. It is irrelevant if you weren’t even born until later. I was and am praying for all those who serve and stand in the miltiary against enemies of all sorts for the rest of us. That includes you. I pray for you when you train, when you serve, if you deploy and after you come home. I pray God would bless you and lead you into all the good He has for you and those you love.

Though this little book is about God, I didn’t always believe in Him. Raised with faith as a child, I went through a ten-year period in my twenties when I wasn’t sure He existed. Life was dark and hopeless. I struggled with depression. I knew I was missing something, but I didn’t know what. One day I finally reached the point I wasn’t sure I wanted to keep living if this was all there was, so I turned toward where I thought God might be and uttered a mental request. “If you’re real, God, could you give me just a little mustard seed sized amount of faith? I’ve heard that’s all I need and it will grow from there. Help me to believe in you.” Well, He answered this prayer very specifically. Step by step it did go forward from there and suffice to say, I now have absolutely no doubts in the existence of God and fully acknowledge that the missing piece to life satisfaction for me indeed was relationship with God. But that is a story for another day. This story is about and for you.

Be forewarned, I’m going to share stuff about God, which includes concepts beyond what may seem comfortable and doesn’t seem to be talked about enough. But I have to be real with you!

One “a-little-out-there” topic is that as I continued to work to learn more about God (to “seek” Him) and He answered, I learned that He does speak to us and promises to teach us to understand Him if we ask and are diligent learners. In the years that followed, He taught me how to recognize His voice. He also encouraged me to practice having the courage to obey what He laid on my heart in interior wispers, especially when initially these requests didn’t seem to make sense.

In autumn 2003…

Prophetic Word: Steward It As I Lead

Lord God, all that we are and all that we have is Yours. We know You alone are God and that You have good plans for us. We ask for You to guide us by Your Holy Spirit. We are listening and as Your beloved children, only want Your will. Our trust is in You and we look with excited expectancy for how You will work for good through us for Your glory in ways beyond anything we could imagine when we choose to trust, listen an obey. Indeed we are Yours. In Jesus' name, Amen

This is what is called a prophetic word.  I hear it as if the words are being spoken into my mind and write it down as I “hear” it.  Please always pray before and as you read.  By definition I am human and imperfect.  In addition, when the Holy Spirit “downloads” a word, it will either resonate with you or it will not and that’s okay.  No one prophetic word is for every person.  And this is my prayer for you: ”LORD, please lead each reader perfectly and cause them to receive and remember, only that which is from You for them.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.” ~ Elizabeth

Humbly written out as “heard” August 24, 2015 Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro © 2015

Steward what I have given you. It was never yours. It is Mine and I alone know what it is for—how I want to use it. I alone see needs. I meet them. I meet them through you

My way is wondrous. My way is great. My way is just. My way is right.

Miracles are worked by Me. My miracles are worked through you.

I made My sacrifice. Follow Me and make yours.

I am your Provider. I alone know what “enough” is. I supply it. I will supply it.

On this earth, in this life, times of famine and times of abundance are. Help each other through it. I provide for one and nudge you to help the other. Then it is your turn and I will call on them to help you in your hour of need.

You focus too much on money as the key to My provision. I provide in an unlimited myriad of other ways, too. Money is not the way to an abundant life. Fullness, contentment and satisfaction are found only in ways that go beyond what money can provide. Money is merely a tool, which is a part of My complete provision. It will never be more in providing the fullness of blessing I have for you. Money is temporary and can help to meet physical needs in the now. It will never meet the deep inner needs which are at your core. Only I can. Money is not the way.

I know at times it is hard for you. I know when you are hungry and worry for shelter. How difficult it can be to trust in the greater, forever-lasting, greater gifts I have for you. Look to Me. Sometimes I have instruction to help you out of the hard place where you find yourself. Sometimes these will not seem to make sense. I exhort you—listen to Me!

And to all of you, I say and keep on saying, open your hands!!! How can I take care of others My way when you are so tight-fisted with what I have provided and refuse to open your hands. Open them and let what I have enabled and provided to flow through you to the world the way I ordain.

This means you must listen. You must choose to believe I will speak to you and direct you as I did My Son, Jesus. It is why I sent My Spirit.

The needs of this world—this place which is not heaven and so much less than I have for you—are massive. You cannot meet all of them.   You cannot and this is not my plan for you. I alone am God. It is through Me alone all needs are met perfectly. My plan. No other.

You do not want to listen because you do not think you want My will. You think there may be a cost and there may be.

If you say you are My disciple, what does that meant to you? A disciple seeks to be trained by the Master—to follow in His footsteps. A follower is committed to walk and live in the way of the One who leads. Am I your leader? You call Me, “Lord”.

Do not call me, “Lord” unless you intend to actively try to follow Me. Do you not know and remember My joy is your strength? Do you not believe and remember, I have plans for you—plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. How do you expect to enjoy these—to enjoy My blessings—if you are not following in the way I am leading? Do you create your own blessings? Do you have any power to do anything without Me? If I decide, can you stop it from coming to pass? Do you decide when the seasons change or when the rain falls? Can you stop death from coming when it is My time? Why do you still think anything is yours? It is Mine and I give it to you to bless you and through you I desire to bless others My perfect way in My perfect order in My perfect timing. Open your hands. Open your mind and seek to hear Me.

Steward all that you are and all that you have as I lead.

Everyday Gifts

Lord God, how magnificent You are. In You and with You there is nothing ordinary, for by Your nature, You fill our lives with the extraordinary. Give us eyes to see You more. By Your Spirit help us to come to rest in You more. You are the Magnificent, All-Knowing One Who we adore. Today and always we choose to take up our rest in You. Use us in whatever way You please for our lives belong to You because we have dedicated ourselves to follow Jesus. In Your wonderful, benevolent Name, Amen

Let’s begin by getting one thing straight. By “Everyday Gifts” I am not referring to gifts which are everyday as in mundane, but magnificent, often surprising gifts the Lord provides to us during our everyday lives. Sometimes these are more apparent and sometimes they are not.

This week, there were several which were so spectacular to me, they beg to be shared! The foundation of all of it simply was the desire to obey Him every moment, like Jesus did Father. Amazingly, the more I have sought to do His will and only His will over the years, the more His amazing, miraculous-seeming gifts seem to accompany me along the way. Goodness, what an encouragement to keep going!

Every day I am asking Him constantly about everything. I don’t always hear accurately. In our humanity, none of us do. However, I seek to hear with the faith of a child, so that as My Father, He will rescue me from whatever may not be His will. I ask Him which route to take when I am out walking or driving the car, which tasks to do and in which order, and even what He would have me wear. One morning this week, when I asked Him this, He gave me a picture in my mind as usual of what He wanted. I began to gather the pieces for that particular work outfit from the closet. Suddenly I realized it didn’t seem right to wear what I thought He was showing me yet. I had grey shoes and deep maroon shoes. These would class with this outfit. It seemed to need black shoes, but the ones the Lord had had me order as soon as I accepted the unexpected new job had not yet arrived.

My husband called to me that he was ready to leave for work. I was lost in thought. Hmm…Had I heard the Holy Spirit correctly? This was the outfit, I had seen in my mind when I asked Him what to wear. Did He have something different He was trying to show me?

I walked with my husband to the front door as usual for our small prayer together and good-byes for the day. He opened the door to head to his car. Low and behold there was a box on our front porch which had not been there after work the night before. It must have been delivered later than usual. No. Couldn’t be…could it? It was. I was stunned. I started to giggle. I pulled the box inside, opened it and pulled out the black shoes. Filled with delight and wonder at the magnificence of our Lord, I went and got dressed for the day in the outfit He had provided.

Through the new job there are many old contacts to be renewed and new contacts to be made. He is making it exceedingly obvious regarding people with whom I have had prior good, productive relationship that we were also put in each other’s lives for such a time as this. One of these friends who works with wounded warriors and their families just last week had let me know there was a woman assigned to work with families of the fallen in nearby Sacramento. I was headed to a regional collaborative meeting in Sacramento one morning this week for those involved especially in veteran/military and military family support. Looking at the day’s schedule I noticed I had a few hours open following the meeting in the early afternoon. I asked the Lord if He perhaps could make it possible for me to get the contact information for this woman in the hopes she might have time for us to meet briefly. It would be good if I could find out more about her role supporting these family members and see if this new financial coaching program of which I am part, might be a blessing.

Before beginning the hour-plus drive to the meeting, I listened and obeyed the Lord for each task I was to do and when and how I was supposed to do it. Such “listening” for His will is the only way I can survive. Like so many of us, there is always more to do than time to do it and He alone knows the perfect order in which to accomplish what He alone knows must be done.

I looked at the clock. It had gotten late—much later than I had wanted to leave. It would be my first time attending a regional veteran support collaborative meeting in a number of years and my very first time at this Sacramento Valley meeting. I so wanted to be there on time—maybe even before it started! This would no longer be possible. Once again, the Lord was orchestrating my timing in a humbling way. Ugh. Yes, Lord. Definitely not my will, but Yours.

The freeway was clear with no slow-downs to mention. Blessing! Astoundingly, I arrived in the location where the map had shown the building should be just ten minutes late. Blessing! (Though I have learned, even when there are unwanted traffic delays, sometimes these are setting up the Lord’s exquisite timing.) A bit disconcerting, however was that the building where the meeting was to be held did not seem to be where it had been indicated on the map. I stared at the building before me, which was did not have the right address. “Lord, where do I go?” I cried out to Him in my thoughts. Not 5 seconds later, a car raced into the parking lot from another entrance on my right, cutting me off, oblivious that I was even there and that I had the right of way. The near miss took me by surprise.  However, the Lord used it to cause me to look in the direction to which it sped on my left. Oh my goodness, there obscured by a line of trees was another section of parking lot, which I had not noticed before. I turned left and went in the direction where the little speeding car had disappeared. Indeed, there it was: my destination. The car which almost hit me in this case had not been a threat, but a gift to point me where I needed to go. I parked and wasted no time going in.

I tried to open the door as unobtrusively as possible. Yes, the meeting had started. The tables where participants were seated were in a U-shape to the facilitator. “Lord, where do I sit?” Immediately, almost before I finished asking the question, my eye fell on a particular chair. Wanting to disrupt as little as possible, I did not question, but took that seat. Just like God, I was just in time to introduce myself. The meeting continued.

The woman next to me had very pointed questions for one of the speakers. Her questions were related to service availability for families of the fallen. Well, that’s interesting, I thought. Wouldn’t it be funny if… Unsuccessfully I tried to sneak a peek at her name tag. The meeting ended. We all stood up, shook hands an introduced ourselves once again to one another. Indeed, incredibly, stunningly in the way only our Lord could do, the woman sitting next to me WAS the woman for whose contact information I had prayed so that I might be able to visit her. I had not had to try to get an appointment. I had not had to get instructions to drive where she was. Instead, the Lord had brought her to me and vice-versa. Had I arrived before the meeting the way I had planned, it is likely I would have taken another seat and missed out on the gift the Lord had for me that morning, which was in direct answer to my prayer, above and beyond that for which I had asked. We had a productive conversation and agreed to stay in contact.

Everyday gifts from our Lord—exactly what I need and when I need it (no earlier and no later). These are His gifts in the management of everyday existence, which do not eliminate all negatives from life, but assist in the work I am to do for Him wherever I am at that moment. Through these gifts and the God-stories which they create, those who hear the stories receive a taste of encouragement and hope that our Lord really is real and infinitely good.

What are some of the gifts the Lord has given you in your everyday? Assuredly they are already there whether you can recognize them yet or not. As you continue to seek His will and take the courage to try to walk it out, these gifts will multiply and so will your joy in the Lord. May you enjoy many blessed days in His service, delighting in His many, ongoing, amazing gifts!

Prophetic Word: Come Spend Time With Me

Lord, we are so grateful that You call us to come away with You. Majesty, Ruler of the Universe and Creator of all, how we are in need of Your love, power and guidance. So often things here do not make sense, how we desire to lean on You more. Teacher, You alone are the Way, Truth and Life, we look to You alone and trust in Your promise to lead us, especially through the rough and dark places which otherwise seem to overwhelm us. You are our Anchor and our Rock and we are so grateful that You invite us to be in You, our Refuge where even in the worst situations You lavish upon us Your love and care, as You accompany us on our journey back home to You forever. Truly, truly in You we find life. In Jesus' name, Amen

Christmas is the season when we contemplate the love of God and stand, kneel, celebrate and bow in awe that GOD Most High would come to us so we can return to Him.  He is calling for us to spend time with Him. He has always been calling. This can be one of the most difficult times of year to set aside time to be with Him and yet, it is the most essential. This morning as I sat quietly with Him reading the Bible, He downloaded the following “word”. It does not condemn but is pure love.  May it bless those for whom He intends it.

Please also remember as you read, that when the Holy Spirit “downloads” a word, it either will resonate with you or it will not.  No one prophetic word is for every person. But there are some for whom God had intended this.  I am human and imperfect.  Please always pray before you read and as you read. And this is my prayer for you: ”LORD, please lead each reader perfectly and cause them to receive and remember, only that which is from You for them.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.” ~ Elizabeth

I call you Martha. I have called you to be Mary. Stop. Breathe. Breathe Me in and breathe Me out. Spend time one-on-one with Me. You run and keep on running, but that is not My pace for you. That is not the pace for which you were created. There are seasons like the farmers’ season of harvest when the days must be so full. But this is to be a season, not a lifestyle.

I see you under the burdens you carry. I see you. How I long to remove these from you. But My way is first to remove them from the inside out. There is a mental battle which must be fought—a choosing to press in and learn My way so that you can wield the sword of My Spirit which is the Word of God, which I gave you as your offensive weapon in My spiritual armor so you can stand before the enemy’s schemes.

But you cannot wield for you inner and outer protection and fight back with that which you have not learned how to use. You must spend time with Me. It is a choice.

How I long to teach you My way and share with you the hidden greater things for these are the true jewels. How I long to help you if you will but come to Me for My yoke is easy and My burden is light. How I long to care for you My way, but you must choose enough to trust and to listen and to spend time with Me when I call you.

Closeness with Me where you experience the contentment, peace and joy I have for you even now, is found as you seek Me and seek Me more for you will find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.   You will find Me and in the deeper revelation of My Truth and My way in My love your joy will finally be complete for in My joy is your strength.

My joy is always pouring forth as an aspect of My infinite incomprehensible love. My joy is the knowing that victory is Mine. It has always been Mine. What the enemy intends for evil (and the evil which pours forth is more than an intention. It is real.) I have already overcome. And I Myself, sovereignly take all these horrid things and in due time I use them to strengthen you, to draw you close to focus you on the truth of eternity even now and to focus you on the very real battle here in our midst where I win but desire to work through you to help usher in My victory. (It is the victory which Jesus already won.)

Remember, My Son. Remember Jesus. The enemy had no true power over Jesus for He is Lord! Yet for love of Me, evil happened to Him and it was allowed so I could bring My greater good. I saw. I wept. It was allowed. It was heinous. The greater victory has come forth for all to see.

Be prepared. Understand. The enemy will appear to win but he is a liar. Deceit is his middle name. There is no truth in him and he has no lasting victory for I turn all ashes into eventual beauty because I alone reign in eternity.

Yet this adversary will seek to discourage you, distract you and steal from you all the goodness I have for you even now. Call to Me and I will show you great and hidden things you do not know. When you seek Me, you will find Me when you seek Me with all your heart. Come to Me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon your shoulders for My yoke is easy and My burden is light. Do not worry as the pagans do about what you will eat or drink or what you will wear, but seek My kingdom first and all these things will be given unto you. For I know the plans I have for You—plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. For My love and thus My kingdom are everlasting. Remember My kingdom is not of this world. Once you join My kingdom because you have seen Me, you are no longer exiled to the adversary’s kingdom of the air here. And your destiny is no longer eternal death, but you too become as I, Jesus, was—in the world, but no longer of it. You become My adopted children. You become citizens of My kingdom with all the rights of citizens. This does not remove the evil from this world, but it does allow you to move through it. There will still be pain, sorrow and great injustice. It does not mean I am not there. Listen and I will bring you through. I am Emmanuel “God With Us” and I am there with you now through all of it, guiding and directing. It is why Jesus asked the Father and the Father sent Me, His Spirit. I AM the Master Shepherd. I ensure you have green pastures in which to rest and still waters from which to drink as I lead you day by day, moment by moment on this journey home which will travel through valleys where the shadow is death, sadness and mourning. But you are journeying home and in My perfect timing, which will suddenly seem like a twinkling of an eye, I will draw you fully to Myself.

Until then, if you do not make time for Me, if you do not listen to Me so you can seek to hear Me and follow, you will not emotionally survive the onslaught which is coming. Only in Me are answers. Only in Me.   There is no understanding without Me and since at its root this is a supernatural spiritual battle, you cannot manage this on your own. You need Me because I am God and you are not. The spirits of this world are also supernatural (so greater than your natural capabilities), but I am greatest. I reign supreme. Thus you cannot survive without Me.

Yet if you will simply look for Me, I will bring you through it. Ask to hear and I will teach you to hear My voice for I desire to lead you and use you for My purposes even in what seem like the tiniest things.

Choose to listen and create spaces in your day for Me. I will teach you how to do it. I speak with My peace. I do not contradict who I am. I do not shame. I do not make afraid. I neither condemn nor hate you. But I do speak with truth and you will know it is I if you seek to learn.

I have so much for you. I know the responsibilities you have to get through this life. They are not a surprise to Me, but learn to listen interiorly for My voice for I love you and will guide you through it and will tell you what to do, when to do it and when (and this is more often than you think) to be still with Me.

I am your strength. I am your refuge. I am your source. I am your shield. I am the One who loves you and who created you for My good purpose. I am the One who restores, refreshes and heals. There is hope in no other. Listen and I will teach you how to come and be still with Me and receive all I have for you even now. It will be for you a delight beyond all you can imagine. I love you.

Ordinary Day

Lord God, how magnificent You are. You are in every detail of our lives, caring, loving, accompanying, carrying, if we will but quiet ourselves to see and listen. Thank You for the gift of this day. Thank You for the gift of every prior day, like the day You had me take photos of autumn leaves and surprised me later that You had enabled illuminated hearts on each one. May we never take a single day for granted. Please give us eyes to see and ears to hear that we may tell Your story--so that others would know. In Jesus' name, Amen

PART ONE

God-stories often take awhile to tell because in order to see His hand in the details, we need to have the background. It is because we know the history that when God moves in our lives we can see His story unfolding before us and we are mesmerized by His magnificence.

And God is in the details every day.  When we seek to be followers of Jesus, listening to the Holy Spirit with our childlike hearing so we can obey what He is telling us to do (because this is what Jesus did: He listened to and obeyed Father, setting aside His own will), then our ordinary days become quite extra-ordinary. In the midst of the normal, God shows up in delightful, comforting and encouraging ways. When we share these God-stories, these tales of how God has been undeniably at work in our lives, it is one of the key ways we give our Lord the honor and credit (glory!) He is due and it helps others “see” Him so they can believe in Him, too. Simultaneously, our personal faith is strengthened by the God-stories others share with us, especially on days when we are weak. Sharing the God-stories reminds us to look beyond discouragement and despair or even the fear and anxiety we too frequently experience in our everyday to see He indeed is with us through all things now. Such is the beautiful, loving way of our God, writing stories of His Presence and care through every day of our lives which can be not be explained away without acknowledging Him. These are stories which delight our hearts and build faith in us and others.

Here is an example. It is a story told in two parts of what would appear to others as an ordinary day with a little rain storm, meeting a friend for tea, a friendly phone call and a long drive home, where to me through it all, our Lord showed me intimately and personally once again how He is at work through all things. In Him with Him and through Him, what others consider ordinary is always extraordinary.

The morning of October 15th, I was at our El Dorado County home later in the week than usually has been the case. There had been possible rain in the forecast for the morning of the 15th. A storm was indeed on its way through, but human prognosticators were unsure whether rain would fall as far south as we live.

Oh, how I wanted it to rain. California remains in desperate need of rain. We have had drought conditions for far too long. Discouragingly, these seem to mirror much of the spiritual condition in the state, especially within the government. God is missing, ignored and not consulted. Thus it is as though our state has become a spiritual wilderness. There is a pervading dryness where we are dying for lack of His Water. We need more of the Holy Spirit—the Living Water, who flows down from the throne of God when He is welcome.

For many years when it has rained, especially into our intermittent drought conditions, to me it has symbolized a manifestation in the physical realm (and atmosphere) of what we need in the spiritual. Eight years ago, I also prayed that when it rains here it would be a two-fold sign from our Lord. First, that I am in His will. And secondly, that He has heard our many prayers and is indeed restoring us to Himself spiritually even though we may not see many tangible results of it yet.

Seen from this perspective I love rain! I love it for its natural good consequences in our physical drought and for what it means from Him for us spiritually. Indeed in this season of California drought how I long for it and revel in the sound of it when it comes.

How super it would be to be in El Dorado County, the place where the 1849 gold rush started, if it were to rain. Oh Lord, the pursuit of earthly gold is not the answer. The pursuit of You is. When we seek You and seek to dwell in You during the life You promise to those who follow Jesus, from here through eternity, as our all-powerful Lord, who is Creator of all, including the entire universe, You promise to provide perfectly for us. Oh, rain in California. Rain in El Dorado County and let it be as a sign that by Your Spirit You are slowly breaking the spiritual drought and ushering in a God-rush, where one by one people will seek You instead of gold and You will protect and provide perfectly in response.  Lord, could You please cause it to rain on October 15th, when I am in the county of the 1848 gold discovery site?

All week so many had looked forward to this potential forecast of rain. Even the night before, I had asked the Lord for it please to be enough rain so the season of hand watering our young oak trees planted this past spring would be ended. How I longed to just sit with my Lord more instead of traipsing around the property with the long watering hose. (Certainly, He also spoke to me mightily when I was out and about the yard-work and especially on long walks, but how much more I loved to just sit with an open Bible, worship music in the background and pen ready to journal whatever He wanted to share with me.)

All night whenever I briefly became awake I had listened for the beautiful sound of His rain on the roof which would mean He was refreshing the drought-parched ground. But despite promising clouds there was no rain.

I awoke shortly before 7am and felt His nudge to arise and go to the open window and pray. As He led I began to speak audibly out into the atmosphere which was pregnant with the scent of rain, but as yet none had fallen. This was travailing prayer. To travail means to labor. Thus it is that birthing type of prayer which presses from the inside and must out like the laboring in order to give birth to a child.

Like physical labor, travailing prayer is involuntary. It comes upon one sometimes when least expected and one simply has to pray. These were prayers of His Spirit in me back to Him. It was deep calling to deep. The Lord was working through one of His lesser human vessels in prayer to birth that which He desired into our physical world. “Lord, send Your rain. Holy Spirit, how we need You in this place. Holy Spirit, send Your Living Water. Oh Lord, the physical rain is to be a sign that You have heard our many prayers and are answering according to Your promise. Oh, Lord, in the desperateness of this physical drought which so perfectly mirrors the spiritual drought in this land, You would not send impotent clouds in response to all our prayers! Oh Lord, let none of Your clouds be impotent. We need Your rain. Holy Spirit, we need You. Living Water, flow down from the throne of God. Rain in our hearts. Rain on our land and bring forth Your life!”

I sucked in my breath. At exactly the moment He had had me begin to pray, a breeze began to flow through the branches of the previously still trees. It reminded me of how the movement of the Holy Spirit, our Breath of Life, is described. Within minutes mist began to fall from the sky.

“Lord, more! Thank You, thank You! But this is not enough! We need Your sign that You are sending enough of Your Spirit to awaken hearts and the physical ground needs more water! More, Lord, please!”

The mist turned into sheets of rain moving across the little valley. It was “just-right” rain—not too much too fast, but just enough to give the earth the drink it so desperately needed.

Peace filled me to overflowing. What a glorious morning! I was soo thankful, so amazed, so content, so in awe of our Lord’s graciousness and how He partners with us to birth His will. The One who asks us to pray, hears and answers. My joy on this morning was complete! He even dropped the beginning melody and lyrics to a new worship song into my mind as the rain poured down, “Holy Spirit, fall like rain…bring Your water from above. Quench the thirst within our hearts. Holy Spirit, Holy Love”.

The rain continued for several hours. It was so soothing to watch! So much for the 25% possibility of precipitation, predicted by human prognosticators! Oh, Lord, how I love it when You show You rule!

There was a fairly new friend with whom I was supposed to meet around 10am. Usually I try to preserve the entire morning when in El Dorado County for time with my Lord, in study of the Word of God, worship, journaling and writing, often with worship music playing in the background, but with minimized distractions so I am still within, ready for whatever He wants to share with me. However, this friend and I wanted to meet. She, her husband and daughters were very new to El Dorado County, however now the Lord was calling them to quickly move to another foothill gold rush community in an adjacent county. We wanted to meet one more time before she left to share with one another what God had been doing in response to prayers.

We chose to meet at a little café in Coloma, a place less than a mile from where James Marshall first had found the gold in the American River in January 1848. This had led to the historic 1849 gold rush, where tens of thousands from all over the world had trekked to California in the hopes of becoming materially wealthy.

I loved doing God-oriented things in the Coloma area, as a way of sort of letting the Lord know even now, that He was first, not gold—that more and more of us were turning our focus to trusting, looking for and listening to Him, in an effort to live out what Jesus had spoken as recorded in Matthew 6 and Luke 11. If we sought to grow closer to our Lord, He would make sure we had what we needed, just as He provided for the birds of the air and the flowers of the field.

In order for our nation and world to come into right alignment with God, He needed to be acknowledged as such by how we chose to live. And He was and is my God, not money of any sort.

Now, this does not mean I am ignorant of the need for money in order to live and the need to work in order to earn. Our family is very cognizant of these things. Golly, I am a Certified Financial Planner with over 30 years’ experience in the financial planning arena! However, everything was created by and belongs to God and He is the only One with power to enable all things—including all that we have. Thus, my reliance is on God to lead us in how to make sure we have what we need, not in our own ideas, abilities or those of any other human being. The gold was not the goal, getting to know God further was. If I tried to follow Him like Jesus did—only doing as I felt His Spirit was leading—He promised we would have enough.

The air was still damp with the smell of first autumn rain as we sat at an outside table, our cups of green tea steaming into the crisp temperatures. It had stopped raining and though I would have loved for it to rain all day, there were others like my friend who had things to do, which would simply be easier to execute if it was under dry skies instead of a downpour.

We shared back and forth excitedly about the evidence of God’s continued leading, care and provision in our lives. She was on a tight timeline. The hour passed quickly. Before we each went to our respective cars to depart and get on with our day, the Lord led me to ask her to quickly take a look at an item in the back of my car which I had been planning to donate to the local thrift store. It was a little arm chair which had been in our daughter’s room, but since she had moved out-of-state to her own place, we had no more use for it.

It was the strangest thing (and so like our God). The day before I had been on my way to make the donation and the Lord had whispered not to do so until I had had my time with this friend and offered the chair to her. I felt like it was for one of their girls. It was as if I could see one of them in my mind’s eye snuggled up and finding great comfort in it.

Though I am one who likes to get “to-do’s” checked off the list, being in the will of God is more important to me than anything else. So the day before, I had asked the Lord what He wanted me to do instead of going to the thrift store. I had an hour before it was time to head over to meet with Hilda for a haircut. I had promised to bring her a coffee from a local coffee shop and wanted to take it to her hot. However, instead of heading to the hospice thrift shop, the Lord nudged me to head to the coffee shop now. Well, that was just odd. I double checked. Yes, when I listened interiorly this is what came with the greatest sense of inner peace; this was the way the Lord was leading. I decided to order my own drink, use the restroom and ask the Lord what He wanted me to do with this suddenly free hour.

When I came out of the rest room and retrieved my drink, I saw the back of a person near the door who I thought was one of my dearest friends, but it would be highly rare to encounter her here, since she lived about 30 minutes away in an adjacent community. However, what blessing! When I took the risk to tap her on the shoulder, she turned and great hugs ensued! It was Maryal and we had not seen each other in person or really spoken by phone (because post-surgery telephone remains difficult for me right now) since I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in mid-July. As it turns out she was meeting someone there and asked me to join them. It was a discussion relevant to the prayer movement in our state and nation and the desire in so many of our hearts for us as a population to turn back to God and seek to live His way with lives consecrated to and devoted to Him.

Oh, Lord, You are so amazing! So THIS is how You want me to spend the suddenly open hour. Oh, Lord, thank You for directing me to the coffee shop and away from the thrift store at an illogical time! How magnificently You cleared my schedule of the task I thought was for now, and brought me here an hour before I thought was the right timing. What a wonderful time with the two of them!

During our meeting, I had also noticed a woman coming in and out of the coffee shop several times with her service dog. The second time, I also noticed that her dog was wearing a little Army jacket. I wondered…was she a veteran? So often women veteran were not acknowledged the way male veterans were. Lord, what do you want me to do? I felt as if I was supposed to give her a copy of the song “Stand Up” in a little gift bag and thank her for her service then and now. She was seated at a table outside. The urge in me to do this for her kept growing! However, I did not feel called to disrupt the meeting I was in so that I could check in with her. Lord, if she is a veteran and I am supposed to reach out to her, please, please don’t let her leave before I can!

Our meeting was over. I was able to give the man with whom Maryal and I met a copy of the RESTORE worship CD in order to provide some worship songs to accompany his mission as well as to affirm his efforts within the prayer movement to lead exactly toward this type of societal restoration—with a special emphasis on youth. I got in my car, remembered Hilda’s coffee and felt the illogical urge to get it by entering the coffee shop drive-through. This meant I had to drive around the front of the building again.  As I did, with Hilda’s coffee in hand, I was pleased. It looked like I would arrive right on time for my appointment. However, because I was driving around the front, suddenly I saw her again—the woman with her service dog. Oh my goodness, Lord! Thank you! She was still there!

Oblivious now to the clock, I found a place to park my car, got out and went into the Eagles Nest Foundation box in the back to put together the little gift with the copy of the song “Stand Up” and write her a note, in case she was indeed a veteran.

She was! She introduced me to her service dog, Marshall, and accepted the gift. It was such a special moment! Oh, Lord, how You do continue to amaze me! Jubilant at the marvelous, caring nature of our God, I proceeded to meet with Hilda, where alone in her shop we enjoyed each other’s company reveling in sharing and encouraging one another with our God stories (testimonies of how He had been there for us in our lives).

Only after leaving Hilda’s shop did I realize that now even if I wanted to, I could not make the donation to the thrift shop because it had closed for the night hours before. Well then, Lord, I guess I am offering the item to my friend in Coloma tomorrow morning. I guess that was you.

And now here we were. The next morning: October 15th. My friend agreed to take a look at this item in my car slated for donation. When she saw the chair, immediately she told me she would take it. One of her daughters actually could really use it. She was in need of a chair of her very own. This one seemed perfect size and style to affirm to this little girl how special she was.

Wow, Lord, really?!? Wow. Once again, God had known and He had allowed me to hear. I remembered discussing it with Him a bit on the way to Coloma for tea. It didn’t seem very considerate to me, to offer this family a chair, when they were scrambling to get packed and moved three days later. Why would I offer them one more thing to have to move, quite literally adding to my friend’s load? But our Lord had seen a little girl He loved who needed her very own chair. It was as if He specifically had wanted her to know, that He loved her so much, He had told someone who had never met her to bring her a chair. That is the exquisite majesty of the all-good, indescribably kind God we serve. Oh, magnificent Lord, indeed exactly as You describe, Your love knows no bounds!

My friend did not have space in her vehicle to transport the chair from Coloma to the nearby home they were vacating. I had time. I drove the chair for her.

She opened the garage door to receive it and immediately and for no particular reason, my eyes fell on a piece of artwork in the stack of things to go. It was a large image of wheat. Oh, how cognizant I am that one of my roles for the Lord in this life is to produce spiritual food (like grain) in the form of writing and music to encourage others and help them on their own journey drawing closer to God. I said nothing to my friend that I had noticed the artwork in the corner.

As we unloaded the chair my friend walked over to the piece of art unprompted and asked if I would like it. She said it was one of her favorites, but she felt as if she was to give it away and was asking if I would like it. A little stunned, I accepted the gift and we placed it in the spot in the back of my car where the chair had been. Our magnificent Lord was providing for us one to the other. Stunning. (to be continued)

Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! (Ps.8:9)

God Wants to Use Us All the Time

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro (c) 2013

You are the Living Water who refreshes us, sustains us and gives us life. Living Water lead the way that You might flow through each of us to refresh one another - not by our power, but by Yours. Oh, Holy One, You reign!
You are the Living Water who refreshes us, sustains us and gives us life. Living Water lead the way that You might flow through each of us to refresh one another – not by our power, but by Yours. Oh, Holy One, You reign!

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life… (Phil 2:14-16a NIV)

“My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.  (John 17:15-18 NIV)

“…but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14 NIV)

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 NIV)

There is a facial crème I have been using for almost 30 years.  I found it in a health food store while in my twenties searching for something else. It was 80% aloe vera with some vitamin E. It sounded healing and healthy so I tried it.  Almost thirty years later it remains my favorite crème for daily use and it is no longer easy to find.  Every time I need more, it must be special ordered (so I order a one or two year supply at a time).

Usually it is a local mega health food supermarket which helps me refresh my supply.  This is not my favorite store.  It has an amazing product selection, but is large and busy, with an often-crowded, more challenging parking lot.  Though I can function well anywhere, I prefer the smaller, quieter environments, with a more small-town feel.  In addition, many of the products they carry for health and healing stem from companies with new age, Eastern religion or other alternative non-God honoring roots.  I can feel it in the atmosphere.  It is not my choice of where to be.

Almost out of the crème again, recently I tried ordering online to eliminate this errand from the never-ending to-do list and to avoid going to this store, but the online supplier was unable to procure the product.  I dropped by another newer local health food grocery which has the quieter environment I      prefer, but they were unable to order it through their distributors.   Alas, this meant a trip back to the larger chain store.

Yesterday, I knew was the day for the errand to be done.  Monday is one of the days I usually work in an office and so it would be on the way home. Following nine hours at my desk I was tempted to skip it.  After all what did waiting another day matter?  However, I felt the inner nudge I have learned to be the Holy Spirit urging me to take care of it.  Maybe He knew tomorrow I wouldn’t have time…  Whatever His reason for “now”, I have learned whenever possible not to ignore His nudges. He always knows best! (Just last week standing in a store next to shelves of coffee on my way out of town for a few days, I felt the nudge to purchase some.  I discounted the nudge because I knew I had at least a week’s supply in the cupboard at home.  Yet when I returned home after being away, I discovered it had every last bean of coffee had been used up by family members who had cooked a few more pots than usual!  Suffice to say – follow the Holy Spirit’s nudges. He DOES know better, even when we think we do!)

Traffic getting to the store was heavy. I had forgotten. It is located at the entrance to a large business park and at 5:30pm the flow of people trying to get out and home plugged the intersections.  However, I knew I was not to give up and turn around.

Inside the store, I found the shelves and place where help was usually found re-arranged.  I didn’t like having to bother someone to write up this order. How much more I would have liked to bless the store with an easy off-the-shelf purchase which didn’t cause someone to have to stop what they are doing, write up what I needed, make the call to order it and then follow-up with me when it arrived. Oh well. Onward.  There was no employee to be found in the usual spot.  “Holy Spirit, where is the person You want me to ask.”  I rounded the end of an aisle and there she was – the woman who has often helped me with exactly this order over the years.  It was likely she did not recognize me, but I recognized her.  She always had a smile and a positive attitude – she never made me feel as if I were putting her out.  She had consistently made the experience very pleasant.  (“Thank you, Lord!”)  We walked to her order desk and she began to take down the information.  The Lord caused me to notice how darling she was dressed, layered for the varying temperatures which can occur in a grocery environment.  Now the Lord nudged me to tell her how cute she looked, especially with the cropped vest, which He had pointed out to me as I followed her to the ordering area.

Her response was unexpected. She thanked me and said she was committed to never growing up, indicating she thought she was dressed more youthful than the woman of probably my age that she was.  The Lord pointed out the delicate gold cross around her neck and urged me to be bold and respond something like “We are called to always remain as children of God in order to inherit His kingdom.”  The woman looked at me with an odd expression and the muscles of her face became tight as she sought to hold back tears.  She told me this statement meant more to her than she could express. It was exactly what she needed to hear, precisely on this day and time.  She continued that though she enjoyed her job, sometimes she felt from a faith perspective as if she were drowning there.  I shared that from my perspective it was no wonder, for in her job (like many of us) she was on a God assignment – in effect a missionary on assignment in a “foreign land”. The Lord led me to continue to tell her how over the years for me she had always been His Light in that place.

There was more bubbling up inside with which to encourage her, but visibly she could not take anymore.  She was at work and had to keep composure, yet if I said more she would lose it. Already her lip was quivering and tears were visible.  It had been a hard day for her.  She had been hurt – again. God knows by whom and how many times.  God had sent me – yes, to order crème – but in that moment also to be a vessel through whom He let His balm of love and truth flow through to ease the pain and bring refreshing to one of His beloved daughters.  He knew how she had been attacked yesterday and what she had needed.  He had sent me to deliver it without knowing I was being sent.

This is who we are to be to each other – vessels always ready through whom He can flow His love and truth which will refresh the weary, usher in healing to the broken and always, always only by the power of His Spirit turn hearts toward the Father and the saving, redeeming power of Jesus.

I was on an errand for moisturizing crème, but it was not just an errand. It was a God-appointment.  This is how God desires to use each of us every day – His Spirit guiding, directing, leading and placing us where we can do His work in what could be considered the most mundane of places. But this is where we live out our physical lives – in the mundane which is neither dull, nor boring, but blessed. Each of us has an assigned place to be – a place where there will be darkness as well as His Light and we are called to shine like stars that others may come to know the freedom, joy and peace of His way.  Therefore wherever we are, we are His missionaries on assignment. Wherever He leads us, we are ambassadors representing the truth of His eternal Kingdom of love, justice and mercy in a culture which in large part does not know Him yet.  Each of us gets weary. Always being “out there” in the world, but not of it we can become spiritually dry. The Holy Spirit moves us in and out of each other’s lives, our paths crossing sometimes just momentarily so that we can bring that refreshing and encouragement to one another.  By it we each receive that extra measure of His strength needed to keep going.

May the Holy Spirit guide you today in a way you are palpably aware of His presence. May He increase your ability to hear His voice (and feel His nudges). May He show you even in the dark places where He has called you to be and go which were not your will, that He is using you even in these hard circumstances. Rejoice and be glad! Jesus has suffered, died and conquered death and every adversary!  He will get us through!  And He is using you where you least expect it (if you will let Him) to be His love, truth and refreshing to a dry and thirsty world.

Christmas is coming.  Before we spend, we need to pray.

In our culture there is a beautiful tradition of giving each other gifts at Christmas as an expression of love and caring.  But too often if not handled correctly, this can put undo financial pressure on households which potentially causes ongoing discord and unrest long after the annual “holy”-day festivities are past.   To stay in the peace God intends for us, we must avoid the cultural landmines of too many commitments and too much spending.  Our focus today is “holy”-day finances.

It is still November, yet already permeating the airwaves, cyberspace and written media is a plethora of messages encouraging you to focus on spending.  Either you will be “merry” if you give the right gifts or you will be “merry” if you finally get what you want.

When did a gift ever bring lasting inner peace and happiness?  It is not possible, because that is not what God ordains as the source of true inner peace and joy – He is.

Now you may say – let’s be practical. I have to give gifts.  It’s expected!

Perhaps it is expected, but this is where our faith should give us strength and courage.  The Bible is clear that we are not to worry about what others think of us, but only about what God thinks.  So before you shop, PRAY!  God knows your financial circumstances.  He knows where you are now, where you’ve been and what’s coming up.  He is the One who enables us to have all that we have.  He is the One to whom everything we have belongs.  We are mere stewards, which means it is our job to put the money He provides to work the way He ordains.  To whom we give what is part of this.  God knows how He wants money spent.  We are obliged to seek His will even in this and not succumb to any social pressure or pressure within families.

Sound hard?  Might be.  On the other hand you might find it quite freeing!  That’s the way God intended it to be.

Cultural pressure is to spend lavishly on others so they know they are loved and yet, no gift should be a prerequisite to love.  If there is a threat you will lose someone’s love or friendship if the gift isn’t “good” enough, then perhaps this friend’s love or friendship was never authentic.  Love can never be measured by how much money is thrown at it.  Love is separate from money.

As Christians we are blessed!  Our Christmas focus is the Gift of Jesus,  not the gifts.  We can stop and pray when the pressure to buy sneaks in and do a double check with God to see what He thinks.  In this way, we can avoid spending more than perhaps we can afford.

So make your list.  Check it twice.  Pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you exactly what to do to cause each person you cherish to feel valued – but within your budget.

Selah! [Pause, and calmly think of that!]

Mindset of Listening for God’s Voice

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro (c) 2011   www.holyspiritpress.org   www.eaglesnestfoundation.org

The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it.  (Ps. 24:1)

We have heard it before and re-visit the theme again to help us re-gain and/or retain our focus: the world is the Lord’s and everything in it.  Everything we have is His.  It comes from Him and is going back to Him.  Our finances are not ours.  They are merely provided for us to steward  – not in the way we decide is best, but according to what He says is His will.  Not even our time is our own.  It also belongs to God.  It is He who numbers our days and has known the fullness of them before we were ever born.

When we became Christians we received the gift of adoption by the Father and citizenship in His Kingdom for eternity. We gave up our right to our own life, our way and realized that we never were really in control at all, choosing instead to embrace God’s plan.  We committed our lives to following Jesus in exchange for His gift.

Sometimes we forget that we were bought at a price and are no longer our own!  We are God’s for Him to do with as He sees fit!  Since everything we are and have is His, our responsibility is not to come up with our own good ideas, but to discern and implement His.

How do we know what He wants us to do?  We listen for His voice.  We actively become His sheep and let the Shepherd lead.  We do what we believe He is asking regardless of any potential (feared) personal cost or sacrifice.  We do this not just by reading His Word and following the concept of His precepts, but by His Spirit who is speaking to us constantly His will for the moment in all things, which is in perfect alignment with His Word (for as Truth, He cannot contradict Himself).

Pre-requisite to the ability to follow Jesus not just in concept, but in daily, minute-by-minute, itemized detail is the belief that He speaks to us in a way that can be heard, so we can listen for and follow His instructions. The second pre-requisite is a mindset which seeks to hear what He is saying.

It sounds so easy to have the mindset of listening for God.   And it is!  Yet, in reality sometimes we aren’t sure we want to hear what He has to say.  We are afraid.  What if He asks us to do something we don’t want to do?

Therefore, the listening mindset is not always easy, but always essential.  It assumes a choice to trust in God, which is founded on a belief that He is who He says and will do as He promises.  In other words, we trust whatever He wants from us will be right and for the greater good.

Once we have committed ourselves to listen, we must train to recognize His voice.  Sometimes it comes as a whisper.  Often it comes like a seemingly random (but definitely specific) thought.  The thoughts can come when we are reading His Word or when we are worshipping, in the shower or on a walk.  Sometimes His voice is like thunder.  Less frequently His voice might be audible.  He can speak through others near us (who may or may not be aware He is speaking to us through them).  Or He may communicate with us through what He shows us in His creation.  God relates one thing to another in new and revelatory ways.  The Lord is infinite and threfore infinitely creative. We can expect His ways of communicating will not be confined to a few and may vary widely.

Common to every way we hear from God is that He will never ask us to do anything which is contrary to His Word (for He cannot contradict His character).  What He speaks to us will be accompannied by His peace, especially when that which He tells us to do doesn’t seem to make sense at that moment.  (Remember, so long as what He is asking doesn’t contradict His Word, it often will not make complete sense for His ways are not our ways.  His thoughts are not our thoughts.  As high as the heavens are above the earth, that’s how much higher and better His thoughts are above ours.  If everything He said made sense, then His thoughts would be no greater than ours.  But He is God!

Listening for God’s voice must be practiced.  The increasing ability to hear from Him corresponds with our heart-felt desire to hear more and seeking to have Him teach us how.  If we seek, He will give us the answer.  It’s His promise (and He cannot lie).

God is not angry if we “mis”-hear Him.  He knows we are children who cannot comprehend fully everything He says with perfect accuracy, just as human parents know especially their young children will not be able to fully comprehend everything we are telling them.  For God it is now and always has been about the heart.  Did we want to hear Him accurately?  Were we seeking to understand and follow? (Or were we purposely ignoring Him, willfully disobeying, or intent on rebelliousness?)

Jesus tells us only if we become as children will we inherit the Kingdom of God.  Just as the human parent of a toddler, child-proofs all doors behind which danger lurks for the child, before sending the child forth, God “child-proofs” doors which we may try to open after we think we have heard Him.  He loves us more than any human parent can love their children.  If our hearts are right and we are seeking to obey, He will not punish us for not understanding completely, but grab us by the hand and gently, firmly lead us in His proper direction.

When we choose to listen for God’s voice and follow we are blessed on a multitude of levels. First, we are in the will of God.  There is no better place to live!  Secondly, He begins to use us in ways to reveal the reality of Who He is to those around us.  In other words, suddenly we find that His supernatural is regularly invading our natural in a way others cannot help but notice.  This is not for our sake, but for His and theirs – that they might recognize Him as Savior and Lord, and choose Him for eternity.  The unexpected miraculous in large and small begins to manifest where He has asked us to be (and we have obediently followed).  There is wonder in the eyes of those aorund us and joy bursting through our hearts as we recognize He is using us when we obey His voice to be His true representatives (ambassadors) to the world.  Life is sweet.  Life is good.  Even when life is bad, we can see and sense He is good.

The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it!  All praise to You, Lord God, that we do not have to figure out how to properly steward all this that You have given us.  Praise be to You, Lord God, for You have always had the perfect plan.  Praise be to You, Spirit of the Living God.  You lead us in the way we should go and we, for our part, commit to follow.  Use us for Your glory!  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Selah! [Pause, and calmly think of that!]

Calling All Worshippers ~ part three

Lord, You are the only Truth & Way. Teach us to fear You alone, bowed down & worshipping You in thought word & deed with reverential awe for our lives are in You.

MINI SCRIPTURE SOAKING BIBLE STUDY ~ Part Three

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro   www.holyspiritpress.org   www.eaglesnestfoundation.org

We are re-considering the importance of an authentic attitude of worship, which reflects an understanding that God is in control and worthy of all trust by reading through one of the stories of Jehoshaphat.  We are focusing here in order to consider the importance of an attitude of worship in our own lives in response to God’s presence, remind ourselves of worship’s place in our day and how we can expect God to respond.  We are recalling, why we worship!

In Part One (https://ascendinworship.wordpress.com/2011/10/31/calling-all-worshippers), we read that when Jehoshaphat became king of Judah, he knew there was only one God.  He understood God’s sovereignty in all circumstances and  God’s promise to protect and provide for those who honored Him for His rightful position as supernatural, Supreme King over all.  Jehoshaphat immediately set about ensuring as much as he could that Judah was a “nation under God”.  Jehoshaphat knew that many others before him had declared Judah a nation under God because God had made promises to Judah.  But those promises were contingent on the people fulfilling one promise: to put God first in their lives, worshipping no other God but God.  Many of his predecessors had honored God in word only.  Jehoshaphat was different.  His reverence of God was more that words.  It was faith declared in word and manifested by action in every regard.  Jehoshaphat used his authority to have all altars to other gods torn down.  Next, understanding he could not expect the people who didn’t know God to revere Him (and knowing God did not want a forced reverence, but a turning of individual hearts toward Him whose reverence to Him was a free will offering, not because of a law), Jehoshaphat send those who knew God into every village to teach the people about Him.

In Part Two (https://ascendinworship.wordpress.com/2011/11/08/calling-all-worshippers-part-two/ ) we  learned that when faced with impossible odds, because they knew God, the people of Judah followed Jehoshaphat to worship God in their crisis.

We continue our study to see how God answered, so we can better understand how God promises to respond when we choose to worship God in all circumstances.

Remember where we stopped.  Jehoshaphat had reminded God of the circumstances where they found themselves.  They did not know what to do. They needed God, His answer and His power to fulfill it. The people waited.

 2 CHRONICLES 20 (Amplified)

14Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly.

Who delivered the message to Jahaziel to speak? (2 Chron 20:14)

It is important to recognize Jahaziel did not speak out his own ideas.  He spoke what follows only because the Spirit of the Lord came upon him and filled him with this message:

15He said, Hearken, all Judah, you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you King Jehoshaphat. The Lord says this to you: Be not afraid or dismayed at this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.

16Tomorrow go down to them. Behold, they will come up by the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the ravine before the Wilderness of Jeruel.

17You shall not need to fight in this battle; take your positions, stand still, and see the deliverance of the Lord [Who is] with you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Fear not nor be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you.

Read the message God gave all those in Judah again through the Jahaziel after the Spirit of the Lord came on him (in direct response to their worship).  What did the Lord say to King Jehoshaphat and all in Judah? (2 Chron. 20:15-17)

When God speaks, what He states is not a “maybe”, but a promise.  Everything which the Spirit of the Lord spoke through Jahaziel was God’s promise to Judah.  How impossible it all sounds!

Therefore, write it out again.  What did God instruct Judah to do and what did He promise He would do?  (2 Chronicles 20:16-17)

18And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the Lord, worshiping Him.

19And some Levites of the Kohathites and Korahites stood up to praise the Lord, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice.

What did Jehoshaphat do when Jahaziel had finished delivering God’s message to Judah?  (2 Chron 20:18)

What did the Levites do when Jahaziel had finished delivering God’s message to Judah? (2 Chron 20:19)

Consider for a moment the impossible odds Judah faced concerning these three armies coming against them. What faith the people had!  First, when news came the enemy was coming against them, they did not run and hide.   When their king called them to gather to worship the Lord they came. This was because of the preparatory work Jehoshaphat had done beforehand, making sure all the people had been taught enough about God to know He was their answer in times of trouble.   If Jehoshaphat had not taught them who God was ahead of time, the people would never have gone to worship God during such a crisis.  It is likely they would have panicked and not worshipped.  They may not even have believed God could provide them with a strategy.  Even if a small remnant had understood and worshipped and God had chosen to respond with release of His strategy as He did through Jahaziel, it is probably the people would not have believed and may even have mocked those who brought the message.   It is highly doubtful they would have had faith to follow the seemingly ridiculous strategy Jahaziel expressed, even though it came from God.  But instead they believed this seemingly ridiculous strategy that they did not have to worry or fight was from God and even thanked Him for it.

20And they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in the Lord your God and you shall be established; believe and remain steadfast to His prophets and you shall prosper.

What did Jehoshaphat tell the people as they went out into the Wilderness to encounter the armies who were coming against them?  (2 Chron 20:20)

21When he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers to sing to the Lord and praise Him in their holy [priestly] garments as they went out before the army, saying, Give thanks to the Lord, for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever!

Who did Jehoshaphat send in front of the army into the battle?  (2 Chron 20:21)

What were they to do? (2 Chron 20:21)

Not only did Jehoshaphat believe what God had spoken through Jahaziel (though the strategy sounded ridiculou when considered with human wisdom), as a sign of faith in what God had promised to do, Jehoshaphat appointed singers to praise God (to WORSHIP HIM) in their holy garments (not wearing armor or any protection against the enemy) and had them precede the army into battle. AND THOSE APPOINTED DID IT!  If God didn’t show up as He had promised, they would surely die!  But God fulfills His promises.  Read on!

     22And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir who had come against Judah, and they were [self-] slaughtered;

23For [suspecting betrayal] the men of Ammon and Moab rose against those of Mount Seir, utterly destroying them. And when they had made an end of the men of Seir, they all helped to destroy one another.

24And when Judah came to the watchtower of the wilderness, they looked at the multitude, and behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none had escaped!

25When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take the spoil, they found among them much cattle, goods, garments, and precious things which they took for themselves, more than they could carry away, so much they were three days in gathering the spoil.

What did God do when the appointed worshippers began to sing and praise leading Judah into battle? (2 Chron. 20:22)

What happened to three armies bent on destroying Judah? (2 Chron 20:22-24)

What was all that remained for Judah to do?  (2 Chron 20:25)

Recall the seemingly ludicrous strategy God had delivered in response to worship by His Spirit through Jahaziel.  What was it?  (2 Chron. 20:15-17)

Did God fulfill His promise in response to their worship (due to their understanding of who He was and His superiority over all their circumstances)?  (2 Chron. 20:22-25)

26On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah. There they blessed the Lord. So the name of the place is still called the Valley of Beracah [blessing].

27Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, Jehoshaphat leading them, to Jerusalem with joy, for the Lord had made them to rejoice over their enemies.

28They came to Jerusalem with harps, lyres, and trumpets to the house of the Lord.

29And the fear of God came upon all the kingdoms of those countries when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel.

30So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest round about.

On the way back from the battlefield Judah worshipped again.  To whom did Judah give credit for the victory?  (2 Chron 20:27-28)

What additional gift did God give Jehoshaphat and the kingdom of Judah in response to their faithfulness to fear Him alone, go to Him as their answer, and worship Him before battle, during and after as a sign of their complete trust in Him?  (2 Chron 20:29-30)

This story of Jehoshaphat shows how God responds to worship with release of His supernatural, sovereign, victorious power in ways beyond what we can imagine.  It shows He will do what He has said He will do.  It also demonstrates the principle that before people can go up and worship Him trusting He is the answer to every circumstance, they must know who He is.  Therefore the people must be taught about God if we expect for the people to put themselves and their nation under Him.

Selah! [Pause, and calmly think of that!]

God’s Agenda Conquers Tyranny of the Urgent

In You we find rest, hope, life, purpose, healing, mercy, forgiveness & love. In Your incomprehensible wisdom You use us, in turn, to be Your love to others Your way. We bow in awe. We rejoice.

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro (c) 2011   www.holyspiritpress.org   www.eaglesnestfoundation.org

It is true that the cacophony of paperwork and tasks must be managed in order to hear the voice of God (so that He is not drowned out) in order for us to love on others as He would have us.  The first step to silencing the incessant chatter of shoulds and have-to’s, however, is always to hunker down and refuse to listen to any voice beyond the voice of  God.  To listen to Him is a deliberate choice.  It happens when above all else, we lift our heads above the muck of distraction and we seek Him.

Lord, what would You have me do today?  Lord, what would You have me do this hour?  Lord, what would You have me do in this moment?  Lord, teach me to know and recognize Your voice so I can follow You.  Lord, I know You as not just Savior but as Lord, Master, Boss, Shepherd… I am not my own.  Jesus only did as He saw the Father doing.  I am a follower of You, Jesus, but cannot unless I can recognize Your voice.  I know You are speaking.  Holy Spirit, teach me to hear and give me courage and strength to follow.

Our life in God submitted to His will is our only life with purpose.  We have no real reason for being outside His will.

We are His ambassadors – His hands and feet to a broken world.  Just as Jesus was, we now are His manifest presence to those around us.  Well, not we ourselves, but His Spirit at work flowing through our God-submitted selves so the world sees His supernatural invading our natural, not by our power, but by His.  They experience His love manifesting in mercy, forgiveness and taking care of those in His righteousness who cannot take care of themselves.  He stands as their Protector, therefore so do we.

But the endless lists tend to hold us captive. The on-going, never-ending chatter of the urgent.  As we hear His voice and follow Him, the power of the list abates because the list no longer holds sway over how we run our day and where we spend our time.  He does.

But there is a second factor.  As He leads and only as He leads, piece by piece by piece, we must allow Him to show us how to unclutter our lives, persevering to bring things in order so we have a greater freedom to flow as He is calling.

Granted there will be periods of time when the call of ministry, work and family (which is all ministry) will not allow this uncluttering, but it will be only a season (albeit sometimes a long one).  He will lead us out if we will let Him.

All this said, never can the overcoming of the clutter of the mind, desk or home become the focus.  It is much too task-driven to be God.  He is always about people.  The dirty floor which begs to be swept will be dirty once again soon after the current sweeping is complete.  The cycle of dirty to clean to dirty again will continue through generations and long beyond our season of “here”.  The people God puts before us to serve cannot wait.  Only He knows when their time in this physical life is done and what each of them needs in order to have their eyes opened so that for the first time they might catch a glimpse of Him or that others for whom He is already Savior and Lord might be encouraged in their work so they do not despair and quit.

When the phone call comes, or the email, or the encounter on the street, office hallway, or in the store,  pay close attention to His assignment.  Breathe deep and listen intently for what He wants done.  Frequently, His instructions will not be to flee the encounter in order to accomplish the incessant to-do list which seemingly cannot wait, but to stay and listen, then speak only that which He knows they need, and which we can only speak because we are at rest in Him as the singular focus of our existence – not the list.

God is about people.  God is about love.  Certainly we are not called to just be out there available to everyone at all times.  God does have very specific tasks for each of us, which He does want done.

The foundation and motivation for every  moment, however, is to love Him because He first loved us and submit to Him for who He is because we recognize He alone is God with the power and plan.  We are not.  And out of a heart seeking to be transformed into His we choose to put love first  in the way He calls us as He calls us because we are seeking to be guided by His Spirit.

God will not fail us.  We have to choose to trust.  He knows which deadlines are truly urgent and when.  He knows how much is enough.  He knows; He knows; He knows all.  We do not.

And so it comes back to trust because we honor Him as God, Savior and Lord.  It comes back to listening for His Spirit’s directions and following through on each step no matter what the cost appears to be because we trust, because we fear Him alone, because we know He is God, because in Him (not ourselves) we live, move and have our being.

Embrace the peace of only doing as He tells us to do individually – as He has us serve in love and as He has us unclutter.  His Way in His perfect timing is where the freedom is and the purpose and the joy.  It is where His will is fulfilled on earth as in heaven and a fallen, blind world is touched by His love, His way and offered the opportunity to be healed forever.

ISA 58:6-12  (Amplified)

6[Rather] is not this the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every [enslaving] yoke?

7Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house–when you see the naked, that you cover him, and that you hide not yourself from [the needs of] your own flesh and blood?

8Then shall your light break forth like the morning, and your healing (your restoration and the power of a new life) shall spring forth speedily; your righteousness (your rightness, your justice, and your right relationship with God) shall go before you [conducting you to peace and prosperity], and the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.

9Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, Here I am. If you take away from your midst yokes of oppression [wherever you find them], the finger pointed in scorn [toward the oppressed or the godly], and every form of false, harsh, unjust, and wicked speaking,

10And if you pour out that with which you sustain your own life for the hungry and satisfy the need of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in darkness, and your obscurity and gloom become like the noonday.

11And the Lord shall guide you continually and satisfy you in drought and in dry places and make strong your bones. And you shall be like a watered garden and like a spring of water whose waters fail not.

12And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of [buildings that have laid waste for] many generations; and you shall be called Repairer of the Breach, Restorer of Streets to Dwell In.

Selah! [Pause & calmly think of that!]

Please consider giving the gift of CHRISTMAS WORSHIP this Christmas.   Christmas is coming.  A few years ago, the Lord whispered to my heart that He wanted to be worshipped at Christmas and He showed me how many of the songs we sing beautifully tell the story of His birth and why He came, but very few actually worship Him during this festive season.  So I asked Him what songs He wanted released.  The result is CHRISTMAS WORSHIP, which includes 7 new, original Christmas worship songs, which the Lord had me compose specifically for this project. It is available for purchase at:

May God receive the honor and worship He is due this Christmas season!
