Source of Christ-mas JOY

Holy One, You are the Source of our joy. Magnificent and wonderful, all the hard things pale in the Light of Your eternal plan. All I want to see this Christmas is You. By focusing on You and what You have done and how You did it and reflecting on what You promise to come, I sense Your joy in Your giving and You give me Your strength. Lord, thank You for Your love. Thank You for Your care. Thank You for Christmas and the reason You came. I have hope and can look forward only because of You. Thank You for holding me close when human means of celebration hurt. You are all that I want and all that I need. In Jesus' name, Amen

Most of us who call ourselves followers of Jesus already know Christmas is not about presents, or gathering with people we love, decorations, lights or Christmas trees. Ultimately it is not about kindness to others or even a baby in a manger. Christmas celebrates and commemorates God come down to earth as one of us while remaining fully God and living with us, then dying and rising again to life everlasting in order to reveal the true nature of our Creator, Father God, open up the Way (His Way) and show us the Way home.

This is a way of restoration. We all need to be restored. We are born without the ability to live out our destiny with and through God, Who created us. We were not created to “get” from Him (though He provides all things to us), but to rely on Him and give to Him.

This is the feast of Christ (“Christ-mas”): that the Lord God, knowing we could never achieve it for ourselves, demonstrated His incomprehensibly infinite and unconditional love for us by being born, living and suffering unjustly until His death in order to ransom us from captivity in a temporal, fallen world. We celebrate freedom from this life being all there is. We celebrate the gift that death at His appointed time has become the door for each of us into ultimate fulfillment of all His promises instead of a bitter end and defeat of all for which we had hoped.

This is what we celebrate. The rest is mere trappings we have chosen to add to it.

So what, if we don’t want to set up a Christmas tree?! So what, if we don’t feel like parties, decorations, baking or celebrating our current life? While these can be very special additions to Christmas, they are not the core. Christmas is a celebration and commemoration of the birth of hope into our world. Jesus’ birth was the beginning of the Lord visibly fulfilling His greatest promise to us: never to leave us or forget us here, but to provide for us the way to the eternal home which He always intended for us.   Christmas reminds us that because He was born, He showed us the Father. He demonstrated His unfathomable love by going to the cross before we ever knew Him or pledged allegiance to Him. Selfless. Giving. Forever. Love. From Him. For us. Christmas is the hope of the Resurrection for our future and the promise of Pentecost where He remains with us through the Holy Spirit leading us today.

Candles and lights remind us of the Light of hope, truth and love which He is, shining into our darkness. Evergreen trees brought inside in winter remind us of never-ending life, which is His promise because of Jesus. Red reminds of the blood Jesus selflessly, sacrificially shed to give us this eternal life and green represents the combination of His restoration and the LIFE to which He invites. The gifts we give and the kindness we pursue are supposed to represent the overflowing outpourings of love we have for Him because He loved us, which we shower on others because we have deep inner need to pour out for others because of how He has done for us.

And yet, kindness as an expression of our love for Him in light of His love for us has no season. And none of the trappings we associate with Christmas are essential.

The core of Christmas is simply Christ. Christ celebrated. Christ adored. Thanksgiving for what He has done and will do with a focus on eternal more than temporal.

If you enjoy all the trappings we associate with Christmas then enjoy! If you find yourself in a place in life where this does not fit, then do not feel obliged and do not allow anyone to cause you to feel obliged. Be kind and just say “no”.

The essential is Christ.

Sit at His feet. Ask Him whatever you want. Tell Him you wish it weren’t so. Cry your tears and remain with Him.

May it be the most beautiful, significant season of celebrating His coming ever. Here is not our home. Let us truly celebrate the One who is our hope because He is the One Who came and is coming again. LIFE!

The Deer on the Hill (and Carols At The Capitol)

Lord, we come to adore You
Lord, we come to adore You, Victor Savior and King.  Heavenly host declared Your coming.  We gather today to sing.  We declare who You are. Every promise is true. We rejoice in what You have said, in who You have been and will always be. Heavenly King, we adore You. Yes, forever.

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro © 2015

The date was Saturday, December 14, 2013: the first Carols At The Capitol gathering. I had spent the night at our Placerville home to be closer to the state capitol, Sacramento. The Lord called me out on a walk shortly after dawn. The air was cold, frost covered the little valley like a light blanket of snow. It was spectacular. The path crunched under my feet. Ice decorated the leaves on nearby blackberry vines like lace. I watched as the flock of swans rose from the reservoir on their daily flight around the area, the newly risen sun tinging their wings with cream-colored gold. At the conclusion of the walk just before I went back inside, the Lord prompted me to turn around one last time at the back garden gate. He nudged me to point my camera up the adjacent hill. I thought it was to be positioned to take a photo of the still rising sun through the trees. However, at the moment my camera was in place, a doe came forward on the slope above and into view. Her warm breath condensed into puffs like steam as it came forth from her nostrils. We stood staring at each other.

In that moment I realized that though December 14, 2013 was Carols At The Capitol to me, to the Lord’s creation it was just another day—and this was a good thing, it was a God-thing. We place varying degrees of importance and value on different days. To the Lord they are all of equal important—of great importance. Each is to be savored and simply lived trusting Him and thus in His peace.

There was some nervousness which accompanied the first Carols At The Capitol. All we wanted was the Lord’s will and we had worked so hard to create what we hoped He wanted. Would anyone come? Would it be what He had wanted? Had we heard Him correctly?

The deer on the hill. The swans in morning flight. Blackberry leaves frosted with frozen lace. An inner sigh.

There was no pressure in this day. There was to be no pressure in any day. It didn’t matter if anyone else came. It was His will for us to be there. And so we would be. Period. We would make our imperfect, childlike offering of Christmas worship on the steps of the state capitol. To our Lord this would be like any other day. He was simply looking if we would obey.

He had asked for us to simply come and offer Christmas carols as worship—to come seeking Him like the Wise Men. No more. No less. Simply….Simply that. Simply worship. Simply joy. Simply peace. All from Him as we did it for Him.

There was no concern or pressure necessary. It was simply our task for the day.  His task. It was to be bliss, not worry in every regard.

If we just came and offered the Christmas carols as worship, as He had seemed to be asking, He would bless it according to His promises. As He had promised my friend (and Founder of Carols At The Capitol), Andrea, if we would worship Him with Christmas carols at the seat of human government, entering the gate into the courts of the highest place in the state, then He would bring us a righteous leader. Was it righteous leader or was it the Righteous One as our Leader?

Recently, in discussion with Andrea’s daughter, Alanna, it has seemed clear He meant if we would simply go seeking Him like the Wise Men and make our offering of Christmas worship, then He would inhabit our land with more of Himself because by our worship we would be welcoming Him (inviting Him to have His way with us no matter who was in government).

Today, we gather again at state capitols to sing Christmas carols as worship to Him with one voice–not only in California, but in other states as well. Andrea worships from heaven, already in the presence of our King. We come seeking this true King, whose Kingdom is not of this world. We come to adore Him, to acknowledge Him as our true Leader, to give Him our hearts and our lives, pledging allegiance to Him by acknowledging what He has done and will do. Christmas carols. Christmas worship. Simply. Our hearts full and overflowing with joy because He came, lived, died, rose and is coming again.

Christmas was the beginning of the fulfillment of all His promises. We begin with Christmas worship to invite Him to be the Righteous Leader over all of us again, and to sovereignly influence the minds of those who govern to rule His way in love, fairness and justice.

All creation is constantly declaring His glory. All the time. Every day.  No matter what.

We join creation and sing. Christmas worship. We declare Him with hearts filled with joy. And we thank Him for another day to declare Him and live in His perfect provision and care until our days here are done and He takes us home.

Contemplating Christmas

Lord, You are the gift and the Giver of all good gifts. There is no greater gift - no greater love. We look to You, bow to You and adore You with all the angels in heaven and those who have gone before.
Lord, You are the gift and the Giver of all good gifts. There is no greater gift – no greater love. We look to You, bow to You and adore You with all the angels in heaven and those who have gone before.

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro (c) 2012

Why do we embrace the season and idea of Christmas like we do, decorating, hosting gathering, wrapping gifts and seeking to pour out love on others?  What is it our spirits yearn for as this time of year approaches?  The surface story prompting the celebration is simple and not especially beautiful.  A husband and wife are mandated by an unfriendly and oppressive government forcibly occupying their land, to make a journey to be counted. This meant the man – a carpenter by trade and by no means wealthy (probably living on income generated project by project) – will not be able to work and earn for the duration of the mandated journey.  And the woman is heavy with child in the thick of the discomfort and weariness of the final trimester of pregnancy.

They arrive after days of travel at their prescribed destination, but all the places where travelers could stay are full.  His wife is now in labor. The birth of the child is imminent.  With no clean place to stay or midwife to assist, she gives birth to her son among the filth of a completely unsanitary environment within a stable or cave (dependent upon the account).  Without anything with her to provide for Him, but swaddling clothes, she lays Him in an animal feed trough as a make-shift crib. There is nothing romantic about the Savior of the world being born according to God’s perfect plan into poverty and lack, unnoticed by the majority of those for whom He left His heavenly throne.

No, the beauty of Christmas is not the surface story.  The magnificence and appeal of Christmas is the hope which this story represents.  This baby is Jesus, whose name means God saves. This baby is Jesus, prophesied as the coming Messiah to deliver and save His people.

Few even knew He was born, yet He was this One, whom God sent.  And as became apparent after His heinous death (which in the moment seemed to wipe out any hope of Him fulfilling what He came to do), we learned His destiny was different than we thought and more wonderful than anyone could have imagined.  Jesus did not leave his eternal throne in heaven to be born, live and die as a criminal though innocent to free one nation on earth from oppression of another, leaving us condemned to a difficult existence here which would end in eternal death and continued separation from God.  Jesus humbled Himself, left His throne, gave up His will for the will of the Father, obeyed letting the people less than He execute Him, so that all those from every nation who so chose could be free from the curse of eternal separation from God and be reunited into His heavenly presence forever.

We need to pause, contemplate and grasp this for a moment. The God who created the universe, who decided how all should be, loves us so much He created us to be with Him.  Even after our ancestors set the tone by rejecting Him and choosing their own way, His love prevails. Through Jesus He made a way for us to be reunited into His goodness.  Forever.

Each of us was born with a need to be valued and loved. God values us and loves us perfectly, completely, infinitely and unconditionally.  The question is whether we will choose to love Him back.  Because Jesus humbled himself and walked out the not-easy life the Father laid out before Him (which did not lead to earthly riches, power or fame, but led to the cross, humiliation, rejection, condemnation, mocking and scorning by the world’s people and leaders, we have the hope of an eternity in His presence so good and fulfilling it defies description utilizing mere human forms of expression.

This is the joy of Christmas – the prostrate thanksgiving to God in the increasing awareness that He loves us this much. The spirit of Christmas attempts to re-create this sacrificial giving of self for the sake of others through gifts, hospitality and festive celebrations. Yet, we cannot out-give the Giver.

Oh, come!  Let us adore Him!

Christmas is Coming! Before Spending, Pray

We remember the profound, miraculous gift of Your birth.

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro (c) 2011    www.holyspiritpress.org      www.eaglesnestfoundation.org

Christmas is coming.  Before we spend, we need to pray.

In our culture there is a beautiful tradition of giving each other gifts at Christmas as an expression of love and caring.  But too often if not handled correctly, this can put undo financial pressure on households which potentially causes ongoing discord and unrest long after the annual “holy”-day festivities are past.   To stay in the peace God intends for us, we must avoid the cultural landmines of too many commitments and too much spending.  Our focus today is “holy”-day finances.

It is still November, yet already permeating the airwaves, cyberspace and written media is a plethora of messages encouraging you to focus on spending.  Either you will be “merry” if you give the right gifts or you will be “merry” if you finally get what you want.

When did a gift ever bring lasting inner peace and happiness?  It is not possible, because that is not what God ordains as the source of true inner peace and joy – He is.

Now you may say – let’s be practical. I have to give gifts.  It’s expected!

Perhaps it is expected, but this is where our faith should give us strength and courage.  The Bible is clear that we are not to worry about what others think of us, but only about what God thinks.  So before you shop, PRAY!  God knows your financial circumstances.  He knows where you are now, where you’ve been and what’s coming up.  He is the One who enables us to have all that we have.  He is the One to whom everything we have belongs.  We are mere stewards, which means it is our job to put the money He provides to work the way He ordains.  To whom we give what is part of this.  God knows how He wants money spent.  We are obliged to seek His will even in this and not succumb to any social pressure or pressure within families.

Sound hard?  Might be.  On the other hand you might find it quite freeing!  That’s the way God intended it to be.

Cultural pressure is to spend lavishly on others so they know they are loved and yet, no gift should be a prerequisite to love.  If there is a threat you will lose someone’s love or friendship if the gift isn’t “good” enough, then perhaps this friend’s love or friendship was never authentic.  Love can never be measured by how much money is thrown at it.  Love is separate from money.

As Christians we are blessed!  Our Christmas focus is the Gift of Jesus,  not the gifts.  We can stop and pray when the pressure to buy sneaks in and do a double check with God to see what He thinks.  In this way, we can avoid spending more than perhaps we can afford.

So make your list.  Check it twice.  Pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you exactly what to do to cause each person you cherish to feel valued – but within your budget.

Selah! [Pause, and calmly think of that!]

His Name Is Emmanuel

Jesus, You fill our lives with Your presence. We adore & rejoice!

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro (c)2011                                              www.holyspiritpress.org     www.eaglesnestfoundation.org

20 But as he was thinking this over, behold, an angel of the LORD appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary [as] your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of (from, out of) the Holy Spirit.  21  She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus [the Greek form of the Hebrew Joshua, which means Savior],  for He will save His people from their sins [that is, prevent them from failing and missing the true end and scope of life, which is God].  22 All this took place that it might be fulfilled which the Lord had spoken through the prophet, 23 Behold, the virgin shall become pregnant and give birth to a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel–which, when translated, means, God with us. (Matt. 1:20-23 Amplified)

Several years ago, the LORD laid on my heart that He wanted me to record a Christmas CD.  How ridiculous that seemed!  Who was I to record a Christmas CD?  Weren’t such recordings only made by successful professional artists in order to capitlize on their followings who would now make additional purchases?  That certainly was not me!  Yes, in 2006 I had begun recording new worship songs the Lord had had me compose in obedience to very specific promptings by the Holy Spirit, but the idea of recording a Christmas CD seemed ludicrous – even pompous!

But as usual, the Lord’s idea was not about me.  It was about creating a collection of mostly new songs with which people could be ushered into worship of Him during the season we celebrate His incarnation.  God showed me how at Christmas there are many wonderful songs which tell His story, evangelizing beautifully.  But God wants to be worshipped!  And there were few to none traditional Christmas songs with lyrics which worshipped Him for who He is and what He did, while contemplating His birth.

Therefore in December 2009, when He opened the door widely to begin work on the CD which would become, CHRISTMAS WORSHIP (released November 2010), I walked through.  By His design, the CD would contain 7 new Christmas worship songs, but it also includes 4 newly arranged rendition of well-known Christmas carols in order to give the CD a “Christmas” feel (until the new worship songs themselves become a sound of Christmas to our hearts).

One of these is “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”.  Over the year of going through the various stages of working to complete the CHRISTMAS WORSHIP CD, the Holy Spirit kept emblazoning one message more than any other on my mind.  His name is Emmanuel, which means “God With Us.”  And He wants us to know that He remains Emmanuel – God With Us – even today (and at all times).

He wants us to remember.  He wants us to be encouraged.  He wants this message to go deep.  He is not a God who is far off, but one who is near.  Jesus came, lived, died and rose again, but He did not thereby remove Himself from our midst.  He sent His Spirit and He remains God With Us.  But just as when He was born and almost no one was aware of His birth (and Presence), today He is here and still few are truly aware He is here.

He wants them to know.  He wants all to know.  He wants as many as possible to enjoy the gifts He has for us, such as freedom from condemnation, eternal death and the world’s lies, true inner peace which surpassses human understanding and irrepressible, undefeatable joy.

He wants us to dare to plumb the depths of the singular most valuable treasure we have (which is He), to seek after the Wisdom of His way with all our heart so that we no longer are beaten down by what the secular world wrongly deems “wise”.  He wants us to live in the freedom He always intended for us, while we fulfill our life’s purpose by re-presenting Him to all around us as His ambassadors.  He wants the world to know the kingdom of God is already here, if they will but look for it and follow where He leads.  He wants to use us to show them – not by self-righteousness, but by the righteousness we receive from Him through Jesus and the poweer of the Holy Spirit daily at work in our lives.

We cannot reveal Him and who He is to the world by our good intentions.  It will only be by His Spirit, as His supernatural invades our natural in response to the simple act of our obedience.  All we have to do is believe He hears and believe He speaks according to His promises.  All He wants is for us to seek to listen spiritually (and He will answer), ask Him to help us discern what we hear and have the courage to follow.  Sometimes (often) it won’t seem to make sense, but it won’t contradict His Word and He is setting up circumstances through which His Presence will be recognized.

He is and always will be Emmanuel: God With Us.  He wants to be found by all. He uses us.

Selah.  (Pause and calmly think of that.)
