Recognizing the Good

There is no other One who is love. You made us–all of us–in Your image and You desire to use us as Your Body through whom You flow to touch the world from here through eternity. Here will never be the extraordinary perfect goodness of heaven. Here there will always be tears. Yet You allow us to be put in position to be present to one another as conduits of Your goodness and care in the most unfortunate circumstances. Thank You, Lord. We are awe-filled and grateful. Thank You. Use us more. In Your might, precious name, Amen

It has been a hard week for so many with the disaster of Hurricane Harvey. Much has already been written. Yet, to me not enough can be said about our true humanity, which has been witnessed in the response to the disaster.  The reality is that the majority does not hate, criticize, demean and bring harm, but reaches out with compassion, love, prayer and real tangible help.  This is what we have in common. This is what unites instead of dividing. We have no desire to sacrifice each other, but unbidden offer the sacrifice of self.

This is the America I have known since birth and of which I am blessed to be a part. But it is not just America–it is humanity at its core–it is international and universal.  Yes, we can choose to hate, but that is not what feeds us. We were made by God to find fulfillment when we offer ourselves to each other with care in that moment and in that way which it is most needed. When we give. Not when we take.

My husband always says that news is the exception not the norm.  Consider the word, “news”. It word means that which is “new” (out of the ordinary and unusual).  Compassion and caring for one another as a normal part of our co-existence–that is what 99 percent of us choose to do every day. It’s not talked about. It remains mostly unpublicized. It doesn’t have to be because it’s not the rare exception, which needs to be given notice. It’s simply who we are.

Oh, I am not exalting us as people because we each remain so imperfect! Often we hurt each other out of our own hurt without even intending it!  But I believe at our core 99% want what is good and right and best for others and that we do aim to take others into consideration. Houston’s disaster and the people’s response reminded us.

None of us can save the world.  Our culture’s concept of hero has been skewed. A hero is not someone with greater physical prowess or who happens for the moment to have attained some measure of celebrity or notoriety.  A hero is someone who in the moment wherever they are steps into the work which is before them which puts them at risk for the good of others and sometimes the world.  Heroes exist unseen doing unrecognized work more than they are visible.

If we each do our seemingly tiny, often seemingly insignificant part, God weaves together His tapestry through it of His love reaching through us His way to touch the world, usher in His compassion, begin His healing, stop injustice, come against evil and administer kindness.  In 2011 the Lord had me compose and record a song about this in honor of the 10th anniversary of the 2001 terror attacks.  I had asked Him for His message 10 years later. It was the message of our standing up each to do our part helping each other in the face of horror and terrible circumstances. Of being present to one another in the seemingly ordinary every day as well as in the seemingly large. Seen in this light, there are so many more heroes in this world than villains.

Remember, you make a difference and it’s good! May God continue to work through us all….May God bless you!

Lord, it is the not-so-welcome anniversary of the day the perspective of most of us shifted and we came to recognize the world is not as safe as we would have hoped. We had admit the sad certainty that even in this generation, there remain those who do not seek peace and do not want to let others live their way, but seek to dominate and destroy. Lord, September 11th is never an easy day. It is a somber anniversary. We remember and will never forget—both those whose lives were taken from them, those who gave all on that day and those who have served and given all since then. We are all connected and our world is less than it could have been for these brave, important, valued, cherished ones are no longer with us.

Yet, September 11th with all its hallowed remembrance has also become a celebration of a different sort. We cannot celebrate what happened on that day, but we can celebrate what people did in response and continue to do as part of their daily lives. Lord, today as we honor and remember, we choose to celebrate and give thanks for those among us who serve others. These are the patriots, the ones who make a difference. There is no measure by which we value the contribution each person makes. We simply celebrate those who serve.

Thank You for every single person. Thank You for how You have put each one in position so we can help one another as those in the crisis of 9-11-01 helped and were helped. Thank You for Your wondrous way of connecting all of us. Thank You that there is no whole in our communities and societies without all of us, for how You have ordained the specific many roles for each of us to have.

On Patriots Day we celebrate and thank You for how in Your wondrous plan, You ordained for it to take the many of us. You did not create us to live in isolation, but in community. We are thankful and we are thankful for every single person in our communities. It is by the action of each in his or her specific role that the positive difference is made in the world today.

So on this Patriots Day we ask You to bless each and every person. We ask You to help all people understand their God-given individual and corporate value. We ask You to fill all people with a sense of their worth because they were created by You and were born to good purpose. We ask You to protect our nation and all nations from those who would do harm and have intentions which are not in the best interest of society here or around the world. We ask that Your Spirit would fill us with more of Your goodness and that by this same Spirit we would know more the role You desire each of us to fulfill to spread Your Way of love, grace, mercy, purpose and true inner fulfillment around the world. We ask that we could hear from You better and that You would direct us very specifically for Your glory and for the love of every person.

We thank You for each person who embraces the call to stand up and serve others. We value all, and on this day especially remember to You first responders, medical personnel, military and veterans. We ask You to bless every single one and keep them safe as they serve to keep us safe. Protect them mind, body and spirit. Let the pressures of how they serve do no lasting harm to them. Bless their families. Encourage them. Give them strength for the journey.

We know You alone are God. We thank You for Your provision and perfect care through good times and bad, when we seem to deserve it and when we don’t. Merciful, kind One, we bow in awe to You.

Lord, please continue to care, lead and guide us. Please continue to show us all how to live in Your Way of peace and understanding more. Help us to be instruments of Your love and beacons of Your Light through the specific jobs You have for us. Do not forget to be merciful, for we do love You and want to honor You in all things. Be our God and let us be a nation known for being under Your banner, living in Your light of truth in Your magnificent, inscrutable Way. Our trust is in You. You are the only One upon whom we can rely. In You is life—now and everlasting. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD. ~ Ps. 33:12a

September 2014

9-11-2001.  We must never forget the attacks upon the USA on that horrific day.  We must not hate, but we must be aware.  They hate. The terrorists; our attackers.  The evil which came against the United States that day, continues to spread in the world today.  We dare not be sleeping, distracted or apathetic. We must stand up and fight where necessary to protect our right to our own way of life and protect those who are suffering severe injustice, persecution and even death by the jihadists whose goal is to control, destroy and kill, not to negotiate peace.  But first and foremost, like those in generations before us, we must go to God, worship, repent (express regret for the ways we have ignored and offended Him and sincerely work to change our ways) and we must pray.  The eternal God is greater than any other force. If we turn and look to Him, bow to Him and honor Him as Lord, He will hear and answer and our world will be saved from the grip of darkness which threatens us now.  Let’s pray. ~ Elizabeth

Heavenly Father, Compassionate Jesus and Most Holy Spirit, You are. You have always been and You always will be. There is none like You and nothing and no one can thwart Your never-ending purpose to draw all people to Yourself, so that You can provide for us perfectly, bless us as Your beloved children and bring us home to You at Your perfect moment.

You are the only One with the plan and power to complete it. No matter what earthly powers decide to do, no matter how great the strength of attacking armies and enemies, You reign.  You protect those who love You.

Lord, evil is growing in our midst. Evil is expanding all around us. Hate, murder, persecution and rampaging death are being pushed ever-forward by an inner rage in the jihadists which seems unstoppable. This is the same type of evil which came against us during the attacks of 9-11-2001.

Lord, this is not Your way.  Lord, You have always honored and heard the prayers of Your faithful remnant.  Lord, You have said that if Your people who are called by Your name, would humble themselves and pray and seek your face, while turning from our wicked ways, that You would hear from heaven, forgive our sins and heal our land. You, oh unchanging God, in times past, have come in response to the authentic worship in Spirit and truth by Your people and vanquished seemingly impossible adversaries which appeared much stronger than could be conquered. Lord God, this is one of the ways You reveal Yourself to the people. This is one of the ways, more people find their way back into Your waiting arms of love, protection and perfect provision for You are waiting to be our God, if we will pledge allegiance to You in order to be Your people.

Lord God, we do not pretend that we have honored You. As a nation we have not. And yet, as Your faithful remnant we come before You now and ask You to be the merciful God who You are and reveal Yourself in a way that demonstrates that evil can never win in the long run for You are Creator and Ruler of the Universe and no one and nothing can thwart Your purposes.

Lord God, we are ready. Come to us by the power of Your Holy Spirit and in addition to worshiping You and praying for Your swift answer to the evil the world faces, we have enlisted in Your army. We desire to follow only You. Forgive us our sins and give us our marching orders. Help each one of us grasp our unique role to fight that which seeks to destroy and usher in Your way of love, acceptance and encouragement which nurtures the life You give. Give us Your power to complete the work You lay before us and by Your Spirit keep us ever mindful that all is by Your power and not our own. We are Your servants. We desire only Your will. Speak to us, Lord. We are listening!

In the midst of this great dark storm in which the world finds itself, we call upon You as Master and King to still the wind and the waves. We will each do whatever part You give us! However, it will take Your power to halt the assault of the enemy which has been steadily taking ground.

We continue to grieve for those who lost their lives on September 11th. We ask that You continue to comfort and bless their families. We pray for each person in the path of the jihadists. We pray for our leaders to discern Your strategy to make inroads against that which comes against all of us. We pray for all military serving to thwart the enemy’s schemes and as that You would bless their families. We grieve anew with each life taken unjustly by jihadists around the world today. Like the heroes of 9-11-01 we will do whatever work to which You assign us, knowing You have the supreme strategy and plan. However, we beseech You, O Lord, come with Your power and save all the people as only You can from this encroaching evil. You alone are Lord. You alone are God. You alone reign supreme. We look to You for You are all that we have and all that we need. You reign. Show Yourself faithful and push back the evil. You are our only hope. Merciful, loving God, we trust in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

13 “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locust to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:13-14 NIV)

10 The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.  11 But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. 12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance. 13 From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind; 14 from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth—15 he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do. 16 No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. 17 A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. 18 But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, 19 to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. 20 We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. 21 In him our hearts rejoice for we trust in his holy name. 22 May your unfailing love be with us, LORD, even as we put our hope in you. (Psalm 33:10-22 NIV)

Prayer and a Song for Patriot’s Day 2013

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro (c) 2013

LORD, we need You - Your direction, Your Spirit, Your Living Water to refresh us and Your Truth to sustain us. So much makes no sense, because we are mere humans (the created, while You are the Creator) and so we cling to You trusting as You ask us to. We know You will not fail to guide us through these times as in every time before. And so we praise Your name in all circumstances and ask for Your blessing. Thank You, that You are God. In Jesus' name, Amen

Now is a time to remember….to remember what was….to remember what is….to remember God is not done….to honor those who have gone before and to ask God to give us our work for today….and to never ever forget…..Below are the lyrics to the song, “One Nation Under God” in honor of Patriot’s Day, 9-11 2013, a link to the song on youtube (please feel free to post a comment as we honor and remember) and a prayer as united we continue to stand.  GOD, please bless America….

ONE NATION UNDER GOD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d593RguxQI8)

One clear September morning, we will never forget,
The attacks upon our nation which left so many dead.
Planes crashing, buildings falling, the Pentagon on fire
We united one nation under God.

One by one the news of heroes from that day
Emerged to tell the story of Americans’ so brave
People helping people, living life beyond themselves
We united one nation under God.

CHORUS
We pledge allegiance to the red, white and blue
One nation under God, united, standing true
Now’s our time to do something, to live beyond ourselves
United one nation under God.

Now the years have passed, the call falls to us
Will we do for our neighbor, give of ourselves.
Will we hear the call to do something before it’s too late
Will we choose to stay one nation under God.

PRAYER written in 2013 remembrance of 9-11-10

Lord, 9-11-01…we remember and never forget how it was that morning, that day, the days that followed and all the days which have been since. We remember to You each of the families and friends of those who lost and gave their lives that day. Continue to be their Comforter and Guide for grief does not stop.

Lord in the midst of such evil, we were amazed at the groundswell of goodness and love from so many for those they knew and selfless sacrifice for those they did not know, but who were their fellow men and women.

Lord, we ask You to bless each and every military member and military family of those who are serving and those who have served–every veteran and every Gold Star family (the families of those warriors who have protected us since 9-11 and gave the ultimate sacrifice in the process).

Lord, war is not good. War is not desired. Sometimes it must be fought and sometimes the temptation to fight must be resisted. Only You know in every circumstance how it must be. At its root though behind every war is someone or a group of someones who want more than is theirs and have put their needs and wants above the welfare of the people.

Lord, give world leaders Your wisdom. Give world leaders your strategy and to those who are willing to accept it—give them Your heart.

Teach us to love with Your love, while standing up for what is right. To see others through Your eyes and know what You would have us do to serve. Help us turn our grief into activism which is inspired by You. Use us to rescue those in harm’s way and deliver the comfort You desire delivered. Teach us to understand that when we are in Your will, there is no small act.

Help us to find our purpose in serving You every moment of every day–not with a critical spirit, because that is not You, but with a heart to listen and obey Your Holy Spirit no matter what with a song of praise in our hearts.

Thank You that You are God and never give up on us. That You sent Jesus, then Your Spirit and You are not done with us, but do not give us what our sins deserve and are working to restore every victim. God of justice. God of grace. God of love. Sustain us. Our trust is in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Standing For GOD is The Priority

LORD, we pledge allegiance to You. We need You as King and Commander in Chief over this nation. Pout out Your Spirit; cause us to see You and bow, seeking Your will ever-after. In Jesus' name, Amen

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro   www.holyspiritpress.org   www.eaglesnestfoundation.org

Note: at the conclusion of this devotion is one chapter from the biblical Book of Deuteronomy.  It is lengthy.  I urge you not to skip it.  If you can’t spare the time now, please save it to read later.  It expresses God’s cycle of restoration as it applied to the Israelites.  God is unchanging.  What applied to them applies to us.  We must understand this cycle to understand the times we are in and what God is looking for from us. ~ Elizabeth

It may sound extreme to some, but the possibility is great that the reason we were more vulnerable to the September 11th attacks was because we were no longer under God’s covering to the extent we had been in the past.  We had walked away from Him, un-inviting Him as Lord over our nation and with this choice, we lost a good degree of His supernatural protection against evil because we had turned away.  (It is not possible to receive the benefits of His protection if we are not with Him.)

Much of the country had reached the point where we had exalted ourselves, believing we knew better than any god and that those who said they relied on God and sought His will were weaklings, who needed an imaginary crutch to help them get through life.  Many no longer felt a need for God.  We had become strong enough not to require Him anymore (or so we thought).

We had science to explain the world around us.  And even a large percentage of those of us who chose to continue to recognize the need for God as Savior and Lord cowed down and cowered to the demands of the minority that our faith was offensive – even though this is the faith upon which America in large part was founded!

In generations past those who came here arrived knowing that they were entering into a society dominated by Judeo-Christian views.  If they chose to live here, they came to terms with this and found a way to live according to their faith within a society dominated by Christianity.  We did not take away their freedom of religion and they did not take away ours.  By acquiescing to the demands that there be no Christian faith visible or audible, we have in essence given up our freedom of religion and now must hide who we are in order to be acceptable.

This is UNacceptable!  Have we forgotten who we are and why we are here?

Over and over in the Bible God describes what happens when we decide we don’t need God, and He allows us to experience life without Him.  If the physical reality were all that existed (which would mean God does not exist), we probably would be fine, but there is a supernatural spiritual reality which is far greater than the natural physical of which we are most cognizant.  The fact we even dare think we do not need God as God when virtually everything (except our ability to choose our will or God’s) is beyond our control is difficult to fathom.  How can we think we don’t need God to be real, when we cannot control the essence or outcome of life?  For instance, we can neither create life from nothing, halt aging, stop death nor control the weather!

And yet, here in the United States, exactly what Moses warned the Israelites against in Deuteronomy has taken place.  It is the same danger against which  Isaiah, Jeremiah and so many other Old Testament prophets warned.  We have become complacent, self-congratulatory and fully taking credit for all good in our lives, without any acknowledgement that none of our blessings have been brought into existence by our own power.

In reality, we have no power and our lifespan is only for a brief moment when considered in light of the history of creation.  God is clear: we are like grass; here today and gone with the next season.  We only have this one short time period in which to make a difference and fulfill our purpose.

What He declared as the purpose for the people who lived during the time the Bible was written is the same purpose for us today.  According to the Bible we have two main purposes:

1) God delights when we are in Him as He is in us, adoring Him and manifesting our love for Him through obedience just as Jesus obeyed the Father, while He simultaneously pours His love out on us through the gifts of eternal salvation through Jesus, and perfect protection and provision so long as we live in the body.

2) We were created for God’s glory (that all would recognize Him through us and give Him the credit He is due) as we function as His ambassadors.  This is done when by His Spirit, His unconditional, unlimited love flows through us to others while we simultaneously stand firmly for the righteousness of His singular way of living.

If we are not living in a way which screams our faith, we have missed our purpose.  This is best done, not by beating others over the head with Scripture quotations and threats of condemnation, but by living lives which look different because of the peace and joy we have regardless of circumstances, and the inexplicable love flowing through us (from Him) as a result of our abiding in Him.

We spend so much time worrying about from here until our natural death.  Yet, God has already promised He has all that handled if we will just fear Him above all ealse.  In other words, if we will believe He is who He says He is, trust Him and focus on discerning and doing His will (only worrying about displeasing Him), He will worry about the rest.

But if we are so concerned about offending others that we are afraid of mentioning Him as a normal matter of course in discussions, then  no one will see Him!  They even might be tempted to think that how we are is by our own power!

Certainly there are times it is better to show through actions than to talk.  Words cannot prove He is, but the other extreme when we keep Him hidden won’t reveal Him either!  We should not be afraid to say we believe, or to offer gently to pray, or to ask permission to say a blessing over others. We should not fear explaining our position on issues is because we pledge allegiance first to our Lord and the way of His Kingdom, putting our loyalty to our King and citizenship in heaven first.

We need to invite God to be palpably present in everything in which we are involved.  Let others decide to leave us behind because they prefer not to be around God’s more intimate presence, rather than us choose to leave God behind because we are afraid someone might be offended.  Jesus spoke of His relationship with the Father in normal conversation as the most natural thing in the world and nothing stopped Him from living as the Father instructed – nothing. We should do the same.

Of course, as with all things, we mustn’t make our own decisions regarding how to proceed, but should do as Jesus did – asking the Father (by the power of the Holy Spirit) to reveal what He wants us to do and say in all circumstances.

If we are to fulfill our life’s purpose, then others must see God through us.  If we keep Him hidden because we are afraid of offending or being rejected, then we will have missed out completely and others will not find their way to life in eternity with Him because they will have never seen the evidence He is real, which God intends to show through us.

DEUTERONOMY 32 (NIV)

1 Listen, you heavens, and I will speak;
hear, you earth, the words of my mouth.

2 Let my teaching fall like rain

and my words descend like dew,

like showers on new grass,

like abundant rain on tender plants.

3 I will proclaim the name of the LORD.

Oh, praise the greatness of our God!

4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect,

and all his ways are just.

A faithful God who does no wrong,

upright and just is he.

5 They are corrupt and not his children;

to their shame they are a warped and crooked generation.

6 Is this the way you repay the LORD,

you foolish and unwise people?

Is he not your Father, your Creator,

who made you and formed you?

7 Remember the days of old;

consider the generations long past.

Ask your father and he will tell you,

your elders, and they will explain to you.

8 When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance,

when he divided all mankind,

he set up boundaries for the peoples

according to the number of the sons of Israel.

9 For the LORD’s portion is his people,

Jacob his allotted inheritance.

10 In a desert land he found him,

in a barren and howling waste.

He shielded him and cared for him;

he guarded him as the apple of his eye,

11 like an eagle that stirs up its nest

and hovers over its young,

that spreads its wings to catch them

and carries them aloft.

12 The LORD alone led him;

no foreign god was with him.

13 He made him ride on the heights of the land

and fed him with the fruit of the fields.

He nourished him with honey from the rock,

and with oil from the flinty crag,

14 with curds and milk from herd and flock

and with fattened lambs and goats,

with choice rams of Bashan

and the finest kernels of wheat.

You drank the foaming blood of the grape.

15 Jeshurun grew fat
and kicked;

filled with food, they became heavy and sleek.

They abandoned the God who made them

and rejected the Rock their Savior.

16 They made him jealous with their foreign gods

and angered him with their detestable idols.

17 They sacrificed to false gods, which are not God—

gods they had not known,

gods that recently appeared,

gods your ancestors did not fear.

18 You deserted the Rock, who fathered you;

you forgot the God who gave you birth.

19 The LORD saw this and rejected them

because he was angered by his sons and daughters.

20 “I will hide my face from them,” he said,

“and see what their end will be;

for they are a perverse generation,

children who are unfaithful.

21 They made me jealous by what is no god

and angered me with their worthless idols.

I will make them envious by those who are not a people;

I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.

22 For a fire will be kindled by my wrath,

one that burns down to the realm of the dead below.

It will devour the earth and its harvests

and set afire the foundations of the mountains.

23 “I will heap calamities on them

and spend my arrows against them.

24 I will send wasting famine against them,

consuming pestilence and deadly plague;

I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts,

the venom of vipers that glide in the dust.

25 In the street the sword will make them childless;

in their homes terror will reign.

The young men and young women will perish,

the infants and those with gray hair.

26 I said I would scatter them

and erase their name from human memory,

27 but I dreaded the taunt of the enemy,

lest the adversary misunderstand

and say, ‘Our hand has triumphed;

the LORD has not done all this.’”

28 They are a nation without sense,

there is no discernment in them.

29 If only they were wise and would understand this

and discern what their end will be!

30 How could one man chase a thousand,

or two put ten thousand to flight,

unless their Rock had sold them,

unless the LORD had given them up?

31 For their rock is not like our Rock,

as even our enemies concede.

32 Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom

and from the fields of Gomorrah.

Their grapes are filled with poison,

and their clusters with bitterness.

33 Their wine is the venom of serpents,

the deadly poison of cobras.

34 “Have I not kept this in reserve

and sealed it in my vaults?

35 It is mine to avenge; I will repay.

In due time their foot will slip;

their day of disaster is near

and their doom rushes upon them.”

36 The LORD will vindicate his people

and relent concerning his servants

when he sees their strength is gone

and no one is left, slave or free.[d]

37 He will say: “Now where are their gods,

the rock they took refuge in,

38 the gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices

and drank the wine of their drink offerings?

Let them rise up to help you!

Let them give you shelter!

39 “See now that I myself am he!

There is no god besides me.

I put to death and I bring to life,

I have wounded and I will heal,

and no one can deliver out of my hand.

40 I lift my hand to heaven and solemnly swear:

As surely as I live forever,

41 when I sharpen my flashing sword

and my hand grasps it in judgment,

I will take vengeance on my adversaries

and repay those who hate me.

42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood,

while my sword devours flesh:

the blood of the slain and the captives,

the heads of the enemy leaders.”

43 Rejoice, you nations, with his people,

for he will avenge the blood of his servants;

he will take vengeance on his enemies

and make atonement for his land and people.

44 Moses came with Joshua son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people. 45 When Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, 46 he said to them, “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. 47 They are not just idle words for you—they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

Selah! [Pause, and calmly think of that!]

Prayer for PATRIOT DAY ~ September 11, 2011

LORD, on September 11th we will pray! To You alone we pledge our allegiance. Our hope is in You. Comfort all who mourn, protect those who fight for us, give us the work of our hands and restore our land. We desire to be one nation under God. In Jesus' name, Amen

from Elizabeth~

We approach the date delicately and perhaps with some trepidation and yet, there is no avoiding the memories and the passage of yet one more year since the 2001 terrorist attacks on the USA.  God has always been the refuge and strength of those who sought Him.  And so, we remember, honor, pay tribute – NEVER FORGET – and we pray:

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, how majestic is Your name in all the earth.  You are sovereign and superior and Your ways are beyond our understanding.  We can grasp the concept of heaven and the beautiful future You have for us there united with the angels and all those who have gone before in Your intimate presence, but we grapple with why there must be evil here while we live in the body.

You are the Creator.  You could have caused it to be differently than it is, but You did not.  Perhaps it is less that we don’t understand (because logically it is to be understood that You wanted us to have a clear choice between You as Lord and an anti-thesis), but on the other hand, why does evil have to seemingly win so many times? Even Your Son was murdered on the cross.  Why did You make it so this was the way it had to be?

Our hearts ache for all the murders, killings, evil thoughts and evil words which are uttered one human being against another.  Yet for all our good intentions, each of us is imperfect both in our understanding of Your mysterious, superior Way and our inability to love.  You are perfect love.  How much more must the evil which continues to rear its head cause You sorrow?

Because You are God, we lay down our inability to have it the way we want, and choose to trust that as God, You do have a plan, especially during times like now when we consciously choose to remember the atrocities which were perpetrated against people in our country on September 11, 2001.

God, we need Your love.  God, we need Your strength.  God, we need You hovering over us that we might never be attacked in such a way again.  God, we need Your plan for our nation.  We understand we can do nothing without You.  Lead us; guide us; comfort us.  Visit each person in our government and help them to udnerstand You reign and that dependence upon You is blessing.

Be with every person in our military – those who serve and have served – and their families.  Give them supernatural strategy, strength, wisdom and ability to execute Your plans on the battlefields.  Protect their minds as well as their bodies with Your supernatural strength and healing power.  Where therealready has been injury – we ask for healing.  They sacrifice and pay the price daily that we might live in freedom.  We appreciate them so much, yet we cannot protect them – only You can. So we are asking You to fulfill Your promises and do the work.  You are also Comforter. Continue to wrap Your loving arms around and sustain all the families and friends of those who were murdered on September 11th, those who died trying to save others, and those who have given their lives in the War on Terror since.

Give us Your strategy, healing and love moving forward.  We are nothing without You, but with You all things are possible.  In the pain of our memories, we also remember and rely on Your promises – that in light of eternity, You will use ALL things for good.  And what the enemy meant for evil in Your supreme way You will ultimately use for good.

We are so thankful that You are.  We are so thankful that in all things You will show Yourself victorious.  We are so thankful for Your love, concern and care in all our circumstances.    We can be at rest in our souls because we know You are!

God, please bless America again.  We know who You are and we bow to You!

In Jesus’ name, Amen

On September 11th, We Will Pray!

LORD, on September 11th we will pray! To You alone we pledge our allegiance. We need You & Your Way. Fill us with Your Spirit and use us as You will; we are nothing without You. In You we have life and purpose.

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro (c) 2011   www.holyspiritpress.org    www.eaglesnestfoundation.org

Public prayer may have been forbidden at Ground Zero ceremonies on 9-11-11, but no person has the power to stop prayer.  Prayer is private.  It goes on in the human heart.  It is the conversation between individuals and God.  It is our individual cry out to God and our listening for His assured answer.  Prayer connects earth with heaven until forever we are in His presence.  Prayer cannot be controlled by one person over another.  It cannot be stopped.  And so we each can pray either alone or together, our prayers uniting like incense rising to God’s nostrils in heaven.  We pray because we must!  We understand the times we are in.

On September 11, 2001 the United States of America was attacked by murdering evil.  It was heinous atrocity perpetrated by human beings against other innocent human beings.  The actions were the embodiment of hate, violence and a complete disregard for human life.  It was completely contrary to the Christian foundational principles of unconditional love and the God-given dignity and value inherent in every human being.

God does not rejoice in evil, but He allows it to exist.  Our ancestors chose to follow a supernatural power which was not God.  What is not God and not of God is not good and cannot be good.  Thus, what is not God’s way is the anti-thesis of God’s good.  It cannot be good for all goodness is with God alone.  Goodness is His essence.  Goodness is enabled through us only by His power.  Therefore the absence of God and His way is evil for it is the opposite of what He is.

God has made it clear from the beginning that we cannot have two masters.  Either we choose God as our Master and King and follow His prescribed way of living, embodying His values or we choose another way.  If it is any way other than God’s, then we are on our own and no longer under His supernatural canopy of protection and provision.

Consider it this way:  He calls us to follow Him.  When we are with Him, He promises to protect us and provide for us perfectly, just as any good Lord does for His subjects.  When we choose a way contrary to His, we are no longer following Him and thus no longer with Him.  This means we cannot expect the supernatural protection and provision the Lord provides for the subjects of His Kingdom because we have chosen to live outside the Kingdom. This is our choice and not His.

In fact, it sorrows God.  He loves us unconditionally, infinitely and perfectly.  He desires to be loved in return, but loves us too much to force us.  And so, His perfect love manifests in mercy.  He sent Jesus as the example and to make the way for us to be reunited with Him.  Now He waits for us to realize our need.

Remember, He created us to find our fulfillment in intimate relationship with and dependency on Him.  Thus until we are aligned with Him simultaneously as His beloved children and subjects, we will sense something is missing and find neither complete contentment, nor true joy, nor inner peace.

God in His love uses every circumstance in our lives to nudge us to recognize our need for a relationship with and dependence on Him.  At every moment, despite our rejection of him, He remains faithful to us – loving us, and ready to restore us into His kingdom under His Lordship as soon as we decide to turn back to Him.

12 “Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.”  13 Rend your heart and not your garments.  Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.  14 Who knows?  He may turn and relent and leave behind a blessing… (Joel 2: 12-14a NIV)

To ultimately turn back to Him, requires us to be in communication with Him.    We do this by our prayer and worship.  Our worship (adoration of all that He is) lets Him know that we know who He is and choose Him as Lord.  Our prayer expresses that we have come to the understanding that we cannot do life on our own, but need God to guide, direct, love and protect us.  Prayer is the upward reach of our childlike hand which God will always reach down and grasp with the love of a perfect parent to lift us up out of our circumstances and into His constant, perfect, supernatural, supreme care.

As citizens of the United States of America we need to pray.  We need to worship God.  It is critical to our survival.  In many ways the United States of America has become complacent.  We have succumbed to the danger described by Moses when he spoke to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 6:4-9,13-15 and 8:6-20.

4 Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the Lord is one.  5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  7 Impress them on your children.  Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates….13 Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name.  14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you; 15 for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land. (Deut. 6:4-9.13-15 NIV)

6 Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him. 7 For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land – a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; 8 a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; 9 a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.

10 When you have eaten and are satisifed, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.  12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplies, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.  15 He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.  16 He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.  17 You may say to youself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.”  But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

19 If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. 20 Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God. (Deut. 8:6-20 NIV)

Many of us have forgotten that God is the one with the power, not us.  We have become self-reliant and proud of our self-reliance.  We take credit for all the good in our lives, when actually all that we have was enabled by God.  We make our plans and expect God to bless them instead of inquiring of God what His plans are for us.

On September 11, 2001 the evil which came against us was so great, we dropped to our knees, finally recognizing once again our need for God.  We recognized that we are not in control and that there are powers greater than us, but nothing and no one is greater than God.  We invited Him to please be the God of our nation again.  Ten years later, it seems we have forgotten.  There are those who would ignore God’s place in our lives and set prayer (and acknowledgment of our need for God) aside.

But as the remnant we still will pray and nothing can stop us.  We know who God is; we know who we want as Lord. We understand our critical need for Him in every aspect of our lives.  He is greater than those who would try to stop Him.  Every generation has its chance to decide if He is Lord.  Every generation whether they acknowledge Him or not passes away and there is no stopping its passing.  All the great exaltations of humanity come to nothing in the end for God remains and His power is sovereign and above all no matter what humans may try to do to ignore Him.

Those of us who know Him will unite in His Spirit regardless of how we may be separated by distance on September 11th.  United we will stand before His throne.  We will give Him the praise and honor He is due.  We will give Him thanks for His protection these past 10 years.  We will pray for His Spirit to touch hearts that the remant may become the majority and once again we may enjoy His covering as one nation under God.

SELAH! [Pause, and calmly think of that!]

Let Freedom Ring!

Lord, may freedom ring through our land; may You guide us in what we are to do to. You are able - the One with the plan & power. We look to You alone.

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro (c) 2011  www.holyspiritpress.org   www.eaglesnestfoundation.org

3 Strengthen the feeble hands,
   steady the knees that give way;
4 say to those with fearful hearts,
   “Be strong, do not fear;
your God will come,
   he will come with vengeance;
with divine retribution
   he will come to save you.”

5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened
   and the ears of the deaf unstopped.
6 Then will the lame leap like a deer,
   and the mute tongue shout for joy.
Water will gush forth in the wilderness
   and streams in the desert.
7 The burning sand will become a pool,
   the thirsty ground bubbling springs.
In the haunts where jackals once lay,
   grass and reeds and papyrus will grow.

8 And a highway will be there;
   it will be called the Way of Holiness;
   it will be for those who walk on that Way.
The unclean will not journey on it;
   wicked fools will not go about on it.
9 No lion will be there,
   nor any ravenous beast;
   they will not be found there.
But only the redeemed will walk there,
10 and those the LORD has rescued will return.
They will enter Zion with singing;
   everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy will overtake them,
   and sorrow and sighing will flee away.  (Isa. 35:3-10 NIV)

There is a rose bush in our front yard which bears full red, ruffled blooms which gently open and cast their tender, alluring scent into the air.  This rose bush was a gift from two friends for my birthday in May 2007, the day before I invited a group of people representing different branches of the military (and different seasons of military service) to join me in the recording studio to sing as a choir of troops singing for troops on the song STAND UP.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50gByW27aAE&feature=BFa&list=ULpiQYnPY1vIA&lf=mfu_in_order

My two friends, with me through thick and thin as I have endeavored to walk out God’s will, had searched long and hard for just the right rose for me, cognizant that each individual type of rose has a registered name.  The name of this beautiful rose is “Let Freedom Ring”, which is the final tag line in the song, STAND UP.  I was overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness and significance of their gift!

It has been 4 1/2 years and still the rose blooms in our yard.  Each year the bush is pruned back until it appears to be only dead sticks, then day by day, month by month the canes grow and bear vibrant blooms which captivate the senses from May through November.

If there is one thing I have learned about roses, it is that in order to receive the blessing of the blooms, one has to deal with the thorns.  And as this rosebush continues to grow and flourish in our yard, bearing fragrant, delicate, stunning blooms on thorny branches, perhaps there is a message here regarding our military and our nation.

As in most areas of our lives, when we look at the “news” being broadcast, most of it is negative.  The focus is on the exceptional bad with little report of the general good.  Perhaps we need to consider the season we are in and learn to work with and cultivate through the thorns until we see beautiful, prolific blooms again.

We must be vigilant and diligent.  We cannot stand idly by and not tend to our country, and not care for our military and their families.

There has always been a price for freedom, both on the battlefield and in terms of citizen participation in government.  If we remain complacent and apathetic or give up, the result will be wild, erratic, uncontrolled, unhealthy growth which produces nothing good (and the thorns will dominate!)

We must help our military where we can.  (For Christians this means stepping in with tangible, emotional and spiritual support as the love of Christ, bringing the restorative power of the one true faith with us).  We must be involved in our government and not just throw up our hands in exasperation at the tangle of thorns.

Thorns in every aspect of life are to be expected.  Why do we let them surprise us.

May we sound a trumpet and declare by our prayers and actions, “Let Freedom Ring” and may we never, ever give up.  God is faithful.  He will hear us, direct us and bring His victory.

SELAH! [Pause, and calmly think of that!]

It is September…May We Never Forget

LORD, to You alone we pledge our allegiance. We need You & Your Way. Fill us with Your Spirit and use us as You will; we are nothing without You. In You we have life and purpose.

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro (c) 2011   www.holyspiritpress.org   www.eaglesnestfoundation.org

And so we enter the month of September, with its scents of the passing summer and approach of autumn.   For many the sounds of the beginning of the school year fill the air and there is the breath of harvest on the breeze.  Autumn brings with it a quiet peace of completion, a comforting stillness absent in the awakening of spring and production push of summer.

And we remember – we must never forget – those who were murdered by the others who came with pre-meditation and hatred in their hearts on September 11, 2011.

We do not remember in order to get stuck in the mourning, for though grief on a certain level never ends, we must go on. We remember in order to honor the victims, to pay tribute to the heroes, to bless their surviving families and to be wise.  History teachers are always good to remind us that if we do not remember our history, we are destined to repeat it.

I am neither a history, international relations, world religion nor political science expert, but it seems as if prior to 9-11-01 we were trying to live somewhat isolated, pretending all was goo and there was no risk of evil, similar to prior to our involvement in World War II.  And then as now we learned.  Brought face to face with evil intent which could not be pacified with “we don’t want to participate”, we had to stand up for ourselves and we have.

We must never forget that the world in which we live is not all good.  Our spiritual heritage as Christians is clear.  So long as we are living our lives in our physical bodies there will be the existence of evil and good.  Evil does not seek peace, but dominion and control.  Evil does not take ‘no’ for an answer and runs over and takes over whomever will not stand and be prepared to block evil’s invation with force.

We do not seek war, but we must always be prepared to stand up and fight and always be prepared to simultaneously love.  For people in and of themselves are not evil, but they have chosen the wrong way.

And so we fight, pray, honor those who have died – the victims and the heroes – and those who serve.

PRAYER

Lord God, may we never forget the lessons of 9-11-01.  May we never forget those who died.  Give us Your wisdom how to continue to defend our values and may our values be yours.  We need You, Lord.  Be with us, protect us and lead ud in the way we are to go.  God, please bless America.  It is a land we love.  Stand beside us and guide us with Your Light of Truth shining brilliantly from above.  From the mountains, to the prairies to the oceans, white with foam. God, please bless America – our home sweet home….In Jesus’ name, Amen

Every Person Matters

LORD, to You alone we pledge our allegiance. We need You & Your Way. Fill us with Your Spirit and use us as You will; we are nothing without You. In You we have life and purpose.

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro   www.holyspiritpress.org    www.eaglesnestfoundation.org

As some of you know, this spring when I was asked if I had a song for 9-11-11 (and I did not), I asked God what message He had for us now that is has been ten years since the heinous terrorist attacks on our country.  In response, He dropped the song, “One Nation Under God” into my head, and had me reserve the studio six weeks in advance to begin recording it on the morning He knew would be following the death of Osama Bin Laden (who died on the day Catholics celebrated Jesus as the Divine Mercy and Pope John Paul II was beatified).  Such polar opposites!

So again I asked God, why did you arrange for the recording of a song, which is Your message for us today in light of these attacks and takes us back to 9-11-01 and forward to today on this ominous date?  He whispered to my heart that the song has a two-fold focus.

First, as a nation we do need to declare we are one nation under God, which the song facilitates.  What we declare we become.  Even on July 4, 1776 when we declared our independence as a nation we were far from it.  We had years yet of war to fight before we finally became independent.   We need to declare we are “one nation under God” to encourage us to stand strong until what we are declaring again becomes reality.

Secondly, as we approach the 10th year since the attacks, we need to never forget the evil which came against us, but our individual focus should be more on remembering our response.  People who were unknown in the eyes of broader society (and thus not attributed any particular value by the population at large) stepped into the work put before them that day and made a huge difference.  People helped people in heroic ways – not because they were any better or worse than anyone else, but because they were faithful to what needed to be done regardless in many cases of the immense persnal cost (even unto death).  This is the essence of a true hero.

We need to remember that this is what makes a hero – nothing less.  And we need to remember that every person is of infinite worth to God (this means you!) and that He desires to use each of us if we merely are as willing as those on 9-11-01 (this means you!) for extraordinary purposes, which will have eternal impact in the lives of others.

Sometimes He does this by having us step out of our normal roles; sometimes He uses us right where we are.  Every person matters.  Every person is important.  Every person is of equal value.  No exceptions.  This is the way of our God.

The value of each individual is one of the key messages of verses two and three of the song.  (The song can be viewed at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d593RguxQI8 )  The message for us is that as we each simply do what God lays before us daily loving others being present to them, encouraging them, forgiving them, resting in God’s peace and joy no matter what is going on around us, God connects our seemingly insignificant little pieces into a quilt of His love and righteousness with which He covers the world. ~ Elizabeth

Every person matters.  You and you and you!  Every person is important and of equal value in the eyes of God.  One of the places in the Bible He explains this exquisitely is in 1 Cor. 12:12-26

12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized byone Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19 If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, 24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, 25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. 26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.   (1 Cor. 12:12-26 NIV)

Most especially read again 1 Cor. 12:21-26.  As usual, God’s way simply is not ours!  His Way is so magnificently beter! How He made our bodies is a reflection of how He values.

God made our bodies so the parts everyone admires – like our eyes, hands, arms, legs, hair, etc we can live without.  But who ever says, “my, you have beautiful kidney!” or “wow, what a pancreas!” or “your lungs are stunning!”?  And yet without these parts of the body, we die.  Thus that which is not admired and receives no recognition is actually the most critical component of all!

If you feel like you are hidden to society, if it seems your work is insignificant, if you think your external appearance doesn’t seem to match up with what society values, God – Creator of the universe, and all-powerful Master of all knows your value is critical to the whole and He delights in you!

Selah! [Pause, and calmly think of that!]
