Oct 22 to Jan 6 reflections from an upcoming book for tending hurting hearts at Christmas
Just as God called the Holy Family, in the midst of the hardship, uncertainty, wrongness and suffering He is calling you. He is calling you to do your God-given part in the world in this time. Just do your part. What you can. As He leads. As He enables. In the midst. In the now. For in this moment—even now—God wants to work in you and in those around you, working through you when you feel as though you cannot, and when you may not even be aware.
Thus, the essential need to keep looking at Him.
Who does He say that He is? How does He say to expect life to be? What have you learned? What have you come to know so far? Where will He be in it? What is your role?
This is not a condemned role where He says you are “bad” if you don’t do this or that. It is not a failed role if you do not produce the perfectly, societally-dictated holiday. It is the God-given role of being an ordinary person subject to natural limitations because He made you to love and you have loved or looked for love or thought you had human love and now at the moment everything seems broken and in pieces. No, it is a role He knows you can do, and it begins with simply gazing at Him so you can grasp what He is trying to say and gain His strength for the moment.
Begin once again (and always) by turning your thoughts to Him. Ponder and consider and ruminate on what He has said about Himself and what this means to you and to this life of all of us together in this world. What does it mean to you today? How does it ignite hope—not in what is not promised but in what is.
To consider what God has said and how He made life to be and where He sees your role in it right now according to Jesus, is to find your heart and mind being re-formed like ready clay to have different expectations that before. For Christmas and beyond.
In these new expectations, which are based on the God-designed, God-created reality, there is not only hope for the outcomes He actually promised (and enabled), but peace in the process.
You can rest in the journey. Rest. Like lying own in a very safe place. Here you are realizing who God is more and understanding at an even deeper level what He actually said, what Jesus really came to do, who Trinity is and how Spirit is here with us now. You comprehend how things will be and thus, no longer hurt as much in what is. At least for now.
And you rest in knowing, He is using you. Here. In this place. Like the Holy Family. Today. In what was unexpected and perhaps more challenging than you ever could have imagined. You are an instrument for God’s personal use in your today. And for tomorrow. This is blessed! Do you feel it? Press in for His will for you in this moment. Your part. You can do it because Spirit is right there to help you.
Lord God, both when I am aware and when I am not, You are working through all things to form my heart to be more like Yours.. I admit, too often I cry out in unwanted pain and ask You to stop as lovingly through that which I wanted and that which I did not, You continue to form me. But how could I not want to be more like You? It’s just that I am so attached to what I have become. It is the way I have coped and survived. Yet, You invite me to more. To leave my lesser goals and hopes and aspirations behind in order to embrace Yours. This is hard. You help. Consistently and persistently. In Your kindness. There is freedom for me in this. Great freedom. The hunger in me for what You brought and are bringing grows. I long to hear Your call more clearly and with You more in view, for You to reflect Yourself through me for the turning and healing of more hearts. Have Your way, Beautiful One.
1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord:
2 Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear My words.
3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and behold, he was working at the wheel.
4 And the vessel that he was making from clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he made it over, reworking it into another vessel as it seemed good to the potter to make it.
