Oct 22 to Jan 6 reflections from an upcoming book for tending hurting hearts at Christmas
Like every other relationship, to know God more, you spend time with Him. With Christmas-different you have this time, if you will choose to spend it His way. Yes, spend it. Invest it.
Time like every other resource during this temporary life is precious because it is limited. There is only so much of it and only God knows the amount allocated to you until you see Him face-to-face on the eternal side of the veil. All you can be sure of is this moment. God does have a plan for this moment. You choose whether you will try to listen for what Spirit is saying about it. If you will look to spend this time as He is leading. It is time He has given you. Will you choose to invest it His way or continue to muscle forward on your own?
Of course, there are some ways life will seem to require of you to spend time fulfilling your obligations. As you do, these times can also be offered as prayer. There is a definite, important, ongoing God-connection to be found in it when you consecrate your daily work to Him.
However, relationship with God must be cultivated by investment of one-on-one time as well. Just like any other relationship. You cannot expect Him to speak so you can hear, direct you, progressively heal and grow you in your understanding, if you are not spending quality time with Him.
That said, the whole idea of beginning to spend focused time on God can be intimidating. He is invisible. He is God! And there are so many ideas out there on how to do it. It can be overwhelming! Yet, you can keep it simple. Holy Spirit knows. He knows you because God made you a certain way and this plus your circumstances causes you to have specific needs. Spirit also knows how much time you have and the detail of God’s will regarding how that time is best invested.
Dare to try. Stop for a moment and consider. Truly stop even though life seems to want to keep whirling around you, pulling you with it (focused on lesser priorities). Pause. Where in your day does God want more time with Him to be set? A regular meeting time. What might He be calling you away from that might seem nice or even important but actually distracts? What might He be drawing you towards?
This is the investment which is true richness and leads to more. Here is where the true treasures of this life (which then leads to the next) are buried.
Only this pursuit of God leads to true wisdom, peace and joy beyond every Nativity scene deep into the heart of God! To balm for your inner hurts. To awe! And eventually to rejoicing!
Let Spirit lead you in knowing the Reason for this season more than you ever have before. The journey begins with one step in this moment and continues with each subsequent one. This journey is the worthy investment of your time and heart for the refreshing and God-activation of your soul. You have already begun.
You are beyond knowing fully and yet You ask me to seek to know You. So many mysteries bound up in how You must be, that there are times just the thought of seeking to know You more can be intimidating. You but promise, if I seek You, You will reveal more of the hidden secrets of meaning of life to me. I want this. I want You. Thank You for drawing me closer. I am relying on this! Show me the spaces of time in each day where my focus is to be You alone. My life belongs to You. Lead me in Your perfect will.
29 For You, O Lord, are my Lamp; the Lord lightens my darkness.
30 For by You I run through a troop; by my God I leap over a wall.
2 Samuel 22:29-30
103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through Your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
107 I am sorely afflicted; renew and quicken me [give me life], O Lord, according to Your word!
Psalm 119:103-105, 107
