His Food and The Hungry

31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.”  32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about….34 My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.  (John 4:31-32, 34 NIV)

Food plays a large role in our lives, because it is a necessary element for our survival.  To celebrate special events, often we focus on preparing and enjoying special food, literally putting together feasts.  However, though Jesus participated in daily meals and many feasts just as we do, His focus was never His next meal.  His focus was the will of God.

By speaking in this way to his disciples, Jesus is making a point.  He isn’t saying never eat food to sustain the physical body. If we don’t, we ultimately will pass away. He is saying, don’t let distractions on lesser things cause you to miss the greater things.

Jesus like our Father and Spirit are concerned first, foremost and always with every person having the opportunity to be reconciled back into His destiny for him or her with God forever. This is the greater thing. Nothing is more important.

Our physical bodies will pass away eventually whether we feed ourselves well or not, but that which our Lord offers will not. It is never-ending and that for which we were created AND that which we do not receive unless we choose to be accept it. It is faith in God and in Jesus as Savior, Lord and the Way to Life which is the only Truth in the universe then, now and forever.

Food, entertainment, pleasures of this world can be easy distraction from the greater gifts He has for us and others, as we learn to be at rest in Him and serve Him as He desires us to serve.  How could anything bring us more satisfaction and true inner fulfillment than that for which He created us?

Joining the Lord in His work for us as part of His Body here to accomplish His purposes (the will of Father) does not mean increased and sometimes even aggravated preaching at people, but attentiveness to His will at all times with bowed-down readiness to obey in all things at all times.

This is His call. Will we hear Him?  Stop worrying and trying to make your own plans. Quiet yourself inside. Still the anxious, spinning thoughts. Ask the Lord to teach you to hear His voice, so you can listen to His plans (which will be a delight to your heart), take courage to step out in faith as He leads and receive His power for that which is His will to be accomplished with His Spirit flowing through you, His way, In the place where you are to touch those who He knows hunger and thirst for Him and sometimes do not even know it.

31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.  (Matt. 6:31-34 NIV)

Contemplating His Majesty

Radiant One, You give us purpose even in the hard places. You are always at work in us and we beckon You to do more. Holy Spirit we know this is not our home and rely on You to work through us now that more might receive Your hope and healing and so that Your glory is revealed. Our eyes are on You. No matter what our eyes are on You. We are seeking and You will be found. Our delight will increase and our joy will be complete for You are. In Jesus' name, Amen

One cannot gaze at Jesus, truly reflecting on and contemplating Him—Who He is, what He has done and His faithfulness to every promise without being changed. He is Majesty, Most High and exquisite, infinite, incomprehensible Love. This love manifests in unending mercy for those who seek it and restoration of person to all the riches of relationship with Him from here through eternity with Him.

The needs of the one with eyes constantly fixed on Jesus do not change. There is still need for food and water to sustain the physical body during this lifetime, clothing to protect the physical body from the ravages of climate and circumstances and shelter to give the body a safe dwelling in which to live and rest. But when our eyes are focused on the Magnificent One and our preoccupation is contemplating His glory, our wants change because moment-by-moment, day-by-day we are being transformed by His Truth from the inside out and therewith our lives.

Knowing He is all-powerful and promises to protect and provide for us perfectly like a Shepherd for His flock, the buzzing, swirling preoccupation with worry, fear and figuring everything out can cease. In the quiet which begins to form within, we can begin to listen better. Then hearing His voice, trusting in who He promises to be, we can listen and consequently, purposefully take up the courage to obey.

This is our role: not to hurry after human plans to get “it all” done, but to gaze upon the only Holy One, revel in His superiority and bow to His plans which are always greater than ours. This is an aspect of the freedom to which He calls us and which He is offering ongoing to those who will turn from other mental pre-occupation, look to Him and follow.

Our gaze through contemplation of Him is shifted. Our gaze through considering Him is lifted. We no longer see our lives from a temporal point of view. We see the true path, which no longer leads to physical death, but through it. We understand here is not our ultimate home, thus it can never be perfect and never will be. Here is the valley of our decision.

There are supernatural powers at work. This means their power is greater than ours. There is the supernatural spiritual enemy of God and humanity and there is the Lord God. The spiritual adversary has many wicked henchmen who strive to work evil through human hearts, which then flows through lives to harm one another in every regard. This evil is the anti-thesis of our Lord, bringing with it hate, anger, pride, self-seeking, exaltation of sexual pleasure, greed, self-reliance, self-focus and the like.

But this evil will always remain less than the Victorious One who gave all for us so that we can receive the fullness of our true destiny—life with Him forever.

There is nothing which can snatch us out of His hand, stealing this destiny from us. Nothing.

No matter how much pain, injustice, illness and sorrow we suffer here, our destiny is with Him. Even now in this imperfect place where we currently live, He will work by His Spirit through us to be vessels carrying the desperately needed Living Water of His Truth, Love, Mercy (manifesting in forgiveness), healing and ongoing restoration to others in His Way, by His power, straight from His eternal, all-good, heavenly throne.

Death is not the end. It is a door. Made to love, we miss those who precede us into eternity with a pain which is not merely feeling, but is also tangible physical. Yet we journey on for there is the promise we will meet again in His Presence where finally we will see the One we now seek and contemplate face to face and where we will finally be at bliss-filled, joyous, eternal rest—living right where we have always belonged.

The journey begins and continues by seeking and then contemplating Him. Through these even now we receive many blessed gifts—portions of our full inheritance from Him which is yet to come.

8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you…16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Cor. 4:8-12,16-18 NIV)

New Year’s Prayer

Lord, we rejoice that You came and are coming again. We rejoice in Your reign. We are so grateful that You lead us from here to eternity if we will but seek to follow. Oh, Lord God, this is indeed our intent. Holy Spirit, come with increase and be our Helper. Our eyes are for You alone. In Jesus' name, Amen

Light of the world, You came into our darkness to show the way back home. Here in this time and place where we seasonally come forth from the celebration of Your birth and move through the shortened winter days into the seemingly ordinary of what our culture calls the New Year, we look to You to light our way. There in the place of eternal rest to which You call us, we will have no need for sun or moon for You will be our eternal Light, illuminating all of heaven at all times for all of us. But for now, we are still on our individual journeys together back to You and we need You to lead for You are Shepherd and You alone know the way (for You are the Way). We can do nothing on our own without You. In You all things live, move and have their being and all things belong to You. No amount of well-intended resolutions to try to improve ourselves amount to anything if You are not with us, guiding us and enabling us to accomplish that which You set us on earth to do. As festive decorations once again begin to be placed in boxes to lie in wait for the next annual Christmas celebration (should it be Your plan for us to still be gathered this side of heaven), we continue to celebrate You, the Light of the world, the Source of all life and our reason for living. We look with the excited anticipation and expectation of children for how You will expand Your kingdom more this year in this often forlorn and hurting place. We consciously pledge allegiance to You once again and defer our will (what we think best) to Yours. You alone are God. There is no other. Thus we know Your plan and Your will to actualize it are better than our own. Have Your way with us again this year, Lord. Use us more. Help us to value how You can use us where we are, not just where we think we should be. By Your Spirit, work in our hearts to increase our trust in You so that we can be more at rest in You, and thereby receive the great, unending outpouring of Your peace and love which is there waiting if we will just seek to grab hold of it. We are like children and need You to guide us. Thank You, that You are and for all the blessings which are to come—both in good circumstances and bad—as we continue to journey through this lesser place (in this temporal life) to Your eternal, infinite, unfathomable more. We welcome You into our New Year!!! In Jesus’ name, Amen
