Silencing What-If’s and Resting in God

Magnificent Lord, Your Way is beyond understanding and yet beautiful beyond description. Give us Your eyes to view each step in our lives with Your perspective from here to eternity. We rejoice in You. We rejoice in who You are. We rejoice in what You are doing that we neither see nor understand because we know it is good!
Magnificent Lord, Your Way is beyond understanding and yet beautiful beyond description. Give us Your eyes to view each step in our lives with Your perspective from here to eternity. We choose to be Your children who will not always comprehend and yet rejoice in You for we trust completely in Your faithfulness and love. We rejoice in who You are. We rejoice in what You are doing even when we can neither see nor understand it because we know ultimate plan is good!

[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One), (2 Cor. 10:5 NIV)

Will they get all the cancer during surgery? I don’t know. Will I lose my ability to speak and sing?  I don’t know.  Will I even make it to the surgery given the dangerous, congested freeways around us? I don’t know. Will I wake up tomorrow? I don’t know.

Questions like these if we allow them to become our preoccupation can be crippling. We do not and won’t ever have answers to questions such as these, for the future is not ours to know ahead of time.

I also don’t need to know. God has given me this moment, this “now”, and I am thankful.

Not knowing what’s ahead and choosing not to worry does not mean being unaware of negative as well as positive possibilities. But worry does not change anything the future might hold. It simply steals the joy and peace God wants to give me in this moment, if I will choose to trust Him, even to rest in Him and His promises. I choose that place of rest (instead of worry). It is a conscious choice. It is a choice walked out in the action of constantly taking my thoughts captive to Christ. This entails trying to catch the little glimmers of what-if’s which stoke the fires of fear within each of us and then choosing to change where my mind is focused to the promises and attributes of God, such as: Lord, You are the sovereign, Holy One. You are in control. All things are in Your hands. You have the plan to use all things for good and not for evil. Nothing can snatch me out of your hand. You provide all my needs…And endlessly on it goes.

This does not mean His ensuing answer as the future unfolds into the present will match what I want. Ultimately He does not promise to always physically heal us. In due time on His appointed day we are each destined to proceed to Him in heaven with all the angels and saints who have gone before! Even the ones Jesus miraculously healed or raised from the dead, eventually died. All of us are continuing to journey through. God has put us here for such a time as this to represent Him even (in fact especially) during times when we must we lean on Him in order to be able to handle that which was not desired.

This moment is what we have. God is with us. He sees every joy, every sorrow and catches our tears in a bottle. He waits to wipe away every tear when we are finally with Him in eternity. In the meantime, He never lets us go. He has engraved us on the palm of His hands and will carry us when we are too weak to walk ourselves if we will but keep our eyes (concentration and focus) on Him. He has purpose for us in this moment in our “now”, for as Master He has designed the Master Plan and as Master Shepherd He leads us into it.

How shall this moment be best put to use? How does God want me to put it to use? His plans are better than mine. I am listening and He will lead me in them.

But now, this is what the Lord says—he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel:  “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.  When you pass through the waters,  I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.  For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;… (Isa. 43:1-3a NIV)

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  (Jer. 29:11 NIV)

PRAYER:  Lord God, Ruler of the heavens and the earth You are. Mightier than all, existent and unchanging forever, in Your infinite wisdom wrought from the unfathomable depths of Your love, You created us in this love to be with You forever. It saddens You to see us here where difficulties are our lot and wrong perceptions masquerading as truth oppress us, and yet despite what our choices deserve, You have not forgotten and will not forget us. You sent Jesus so we could be rescued, reconciled in our relationship with You and restored to the place You ordained for us before we were even created. Lord, You are the perfect and Holy One. You are the One with the plan and strategy. You are the One who will eventually call us home. Lord God, give us Your strength for today, regardless of what we are each facing. Manifest Your presence in response to our worship and adoration, encourage us with the Truth contained in Your Word, fill us with joy at knowing You more and give us Your strategy for this moment. Your will is all we want. We choose to be followers of Jesus. We choose to follow Your Way home. We choose to let Your joy be our strength and to rejoice in all that we know You are doing especially when we cannot see.  Holy Spirit, sent from the Father at the request of Jesus, we are looking to You to lead us. You say if we will seek You, You will be found and You speak to us and guide us. We are listening. We desire every day for You to use us to be Your representatives to others along the way. Holy One that we love, our trust is in You. Our eyes are on You. We choose even when life’s storms arise to look to You alone for Your eternally good answers. For You are God and there is no other. You control all and all things are in Your perfect hands. Indeed, we gratefully accept Your invitation to lay our burdens down and take our place at rest in You even in this moment. Thank You for Your provision and boundless love. We are in awe. In Jesus’ name, Amen

God bless you!

Continuing the Journey, Following My Lord

Your Spirit breathes Your life into us and leads us in the way we should go. You adopt us as Your children and deploy us as Your ambassadors for Your glory. Your way is not easy. Your way is glorious. How we delight to follow. Thank You for Your love and good purpose in all things, especially when we cannot see.

The Lord is my Shepherd. All my life He is with me. I am journeying home and He is leading. The diagnosis of cancer almost two weeks ago does not define or change who I am. It simply is one more step in the journey.  These are valleys through the shadow of death where we need fear no evil for our Lord is with us, guiding and directing us, never leaving or forsaking us, always ensuring we have all that we need.

None of us know the various valleys through which He will lead us as we journey through this imperfect world home for it is a place of problems, obstacles, difficulties, suffering and injustice. It was the same for Jesus. Here is not heaven, nor was it meant to be. This is not our God-intended home. We are journeying through it. This new place is but one more step and He will, will, will use even this for great eternal good, whether I can fathom it or even see it or not.

Contemplating the Way of Jesus and the Way of our God with us during this physical aspect of our existence, it is clear from God’s message to us in Matthew 6 and Luke 12 that there will be troubles. And yet, we are not to worry. We are to know, understand in the truth that God Himself will provide for us all that we need wherever we are until the day He calls us home to Him in eternity. This does not mean it will be easy. Every generation has experienced hardship, drought, famine, illness, battles and ultimately death. It does mean He will be there to get us through them. The conclusion which He caused me to draw from this years ago is that even in our illness (and other difficulties), perhaps especially in these, they are not just what is being done to us, they are places where God will take what the enemy intends for evil and use it for great good.   In other words, wherever life takes us, we are on God-assignment. We are lamps carrying His Light into the dark places. We are ambassadors called to re-present Him as we allow the free-flow of His Spirit through us in foreign places where we are not necessarily comfortable. (These are places where we would not choose to be if left to ourselves.)

For years as I have prayed for others on a journey into the harder, darker places, I have prayed God would use them for great good, that they would recognize if they can chose to trust Him and so walk in His peace, they may be the only glimpse of His Light of truth, love, and beauty which others see in that place on that day. Everything that happens to us, contains an assignment from God to be a representative of His kingdom as we walk out this assignment filled with the knowledge of Him which comes from time spent in His presence in worship, prayer and study of the Word of God and in stillness, letting Him talk with us about what is important to Him, letting Him teach us about Himself as we quiet our minds and consider our surroundings with His eyes.

This is my mission as well. I embrace it. Lord, not my will but Yours. Wherever You can use me in Your perfect will, that is the place I am willing to go. It is not sacrifice. It is joy—even if it is not to a preferred place. I can say this because of the many years already spent walking where He leads.  I know there is always such beauty, majesty and surprise in what He will bring to pass. It is not always fun. It is not necessarily without pain. But when seen from His eternal, all-loving, all-rescuing perspective, it is always way beyond anything I can imagine.

And so, though this newest aspect of life’s journey was not only my list of desired life experiences, I know God has great plans through it.  I am not in a hurry to be done here and now because I love being His ambassador!  I do desire to be healed here on earth, not just for heaven.  But my focus is not and cannot be the what-if’s which can unsettle and steal this moment’s joy.  My eyes are on my Savior, listening to and waiting for His next word, so that by the gentle leading and power of the Holy Spirit, I might follow Him in this next step on this journey home, which by definition contain His blessing and continue to usher in His comfort, peace, joy and healing for others both now and for eternity.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.  Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. ~ PSALM 23

God bless you!

Rain for His Reign, Our Refreshing & the Harvest

You alone are God; You alone are Lord. We look to You; we adore only You. We trust only You. We wait expectantly for Your answer. We know You promise to hear and restore and we await Your response with great expectation. Thank You, Lord.

A Thought and a Prayer: This morning following two days of blasting high temperatures, there is the appearance of the possibility of rain. Just for the sky to be covered in these type of threatening clouds and the mid-summer air to be heavy with moisture is unusual for our climate. It is rare for us to have rain in July in Northern California. And yet all the remainder of the week following the cancer diagnosis, clouds laden with moisture moved in groups across the sky dropping showers in intermittent locations sporadically. Last Sunday following one of our daughters being Candy Moscu’s first body work and prayer client in her new Placerville location, the clouds unloaded on Placerville after our departure. My daughter and I were thrilled to encounter puddles on the freeway where rain had poured right before we drove through. Rain brings the water which enables life—plowing, planting, nurturing and growing of food which we need to survive is enabled by water. If we have nothing to drink—we die. This is true both spiritually and naturally.

How lovely it would be if some rain did fall. (An unusual breeze is whispering through the trees as I write this.) Fires are raging throughout dry California. California once again is burning.

Rain brings the water which could help quench the fires and stop their destruction. Rain is an outward sign of God’s sovereign spiritual as well as natural restoring power that we would be revived and nurtured to become God’s harvest through which He will spiritually feed others nurturing them for their eternal health. (Your kingdom come, Your will be done, Lord—on earth as in heaven, please.)

Rain, rain, oh Holy Spirit come! Rain, rain, oh Holy Spirit put out the raging fires which bring destruction in this season of drought. Rain, rain, oh Holy Spirit bring the water, Your Living Water from the throne of God to restore. We are not worthy of Your restoration. Especially here in California, the masses have continued to follow the spirit of the world in the people who have been elected and the legislation which has been brought to pass as a result. As a population, we have not honored You or sought to put ourselves under Your sovereign care as Lord. And yet, You are sovereign and ever-faithful. Surely, You will hear the remnant and answer. It is what You have always done and You do not change. Yes, Lord, we acknowledge there are more who You desire to come out of complacency and wake up from the glaze with which the constant onslaught of worldly wisdom masquerading as truth has blurred their vision. And yes, Lord, we are working on distributing Your message where You open doors, but Lord, surely You will hear Your remnant now and answer before all have turned to You, so by the coming of the increase of Your Living Water needed to restore us, it will also bring Your increased harvest (because of the increase of Your Presence).  And so we do ask You to send some rain today, if just a few drops as a sign that You have not forgotten us and will indeed restore us, not only from this natural drought but from the larger spiritual one as well. If not, it does not change our trust in You. Your timing is perfect. Your Way beyond reproach. It is a Way in which we delight! Lord God, You are all that we want and all that we need. Lord, oh Faithful One, do hear our prayer and answer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A New Journey

You grant us Your peace as we rest in You. All things are in Your control. Whatever comes You never leave or forsake us. You lead. We follow. We rejoice! Our trust is in You!

25 Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on…26 Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?…33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.  34 Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.  (Matt. 6:25-27, 33-34 ESV)

Dearest Reader,

On July 14, 2014 I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The prognosis is good, although only hindsight will tell how accurate this initial diagnosis and prognosis actually are.

Meanwhile in all things God is working to grow us and transform us more and more into His image.  Though this diagnosis was a surprise to all of us, the further transformation He is sure to bring through it I fully embrace!

Circumstances such as this more than others are cause for pause, reflection and focused listening on what God would say to us. Does He have a message? Sometimes.  Other times He merely asks us to trust, for no explanation of what is and what is to come will make sense to our child-like minds.  We cannot grasp it! It is beyond our ability.  He is the Almighty Parent. He knows all. He has the overview. We do not.

Considering His mandate that we must become as children to inherit the Kingdom of God and recognizing the truth that His ways are so much superior to ours that we will never completely grasp them, it has struck me more than once that as His children no matter how much we learn about God, we probably never go beyond the equivalent of human children aged 3-5 in comparison to our supernatural sovereign Parent.  Thus what we experience won’t always make sense. It can’t. We are ever less than God.  We are the created. He is the Creator.  In addition, it will not be just. This is and will ever be earth, not heaven.  Injustice is part and parcel of the worldly kingdom where God’s adversary has had dominion since Adam and Eve chose to respect his leadership over God’s.

In this light, rarely does someone understand or expect a diagnosis of cancer or any other similar threat to physical well-being. Yet in all this I am also confident of His promise that He sees every bit of sorrow, pain and suffering and waits to wipe every tear away and bring us into His eternal presence where nothing can hurt us or those we love again.

To be sure, this new step in my life is certainly not along a path I would have chosen for me or the ones I love. It is not one I want.  But this is the path upon which I have been placed.  Periodically along this way as God gives me certain thoughts, they will be shared on this blog. They will be categorized under “Cancer Reflections”  (God willing the journey through this will be brief, however, we shall see.)

Since the news, our Lord and our God has oh-so-graciously blessed me with His peace from the inside out which truly surpasses human understanding. I trust Him and I can feel His incredible response to the incredible outpouring of love and prayers some of you already have been richly showering on me.   THANK YOU FOR PRAYING! Please continue to pray as God leads, for regardless of the medical community’s prognosis and confidence in a good result, my confidence is in God alone. He is the only One with the power to heal both for now and for eternity, and I know He hears and answers all prayers.

I hope and pray that wherever you are in life, you are able to receive His gift of peace in this moment as well.   God bless you!

Elizabeth
