Holy Spirit Rivers of Refreshing and Life in the Wilderness

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro (c) 2013

Lord, let the River of Your Spirit flow through us, transforming us into Your image and revealing to us the True Wealth which You are for every aspect of life now through eternity. Living Water flow into the wilderness of our society one by one and bring forth Your life!
Lord, let the River of Your Spirit flow through us, transforming us into Your image and revealing to us the True Wealth which You are for every aspect of life now through eternity. Living Water flow into the wilderness of our society one by one and bring forth Your life!

Sometimes we forget, we are in exile. God created us to be with Him forever–citizens of His eternal, all-good Kingdom and His own beloved children for whom He would always care perfectly and completely.  Yet our ancestors chose a different path: their own. Instead of honoring the command of the King, they decided they knew better and followed the advice of another….one who wanted to be God, but never will be and one who is supernatural and yet our Lord’s anti-thesis and thus evil and self-seeking in every regard.  And so God honored our ancestors’ choice and exiled us from His kingdom to be under the dominion of this evil adversary.  But like the father of the prodigal son, His heart was always, always to be ready to welcome us back to His Kingdom if we would but choose it–if we would but turn and look for Him again.

Thus Jesus….Jesus makes the path back to the Father and uses those of us who have chosen to follow Him to help make the path and illuminate it (by shining His Light) for others seeking to follow as well.

In this place of exile, where until we find His way we wander seemingly aimlessly and unable to find true purpose, joy and peace, it is as if we are stumbling around in a dark, unlit place unable to find our way.  We night LIGHT in this world. We need the Light of the world.

In this place of exile, we thirst continually as in the desert, unable to find that which quenches our insatiable spiritual thirst for value, meaning and loving relationship (which are our greatest needs).  Life seems as barren, hard, discouraging and disappointing as any wilderness.  We live with an ongoing sense of futility, scarcity, fear for survival, scavenging in the face of evil and death all around.

In this day and age of city-provided water where many of us no longer have to worry about digging and maintaining our own wells, we forget that without access to water, people were unable to live and sustain life.  Water was always the first necessity sought before life could be lived in any place.

It is the same in our spiritual lives (for we are spiritual beings first, dwelling in temporary physical tents.)  In order for this spiritual wilderness in which we find ourselves to become a fruitful plain and in order for there to be abundant harvest and a quenching of the incessant thirst of our souls, we need the Holy Spirit.  He is the Living Water who flows forth from the throne of God (Rev. 22:1,17; John 4:10)  and ushers in God’s restoration plan into each of our lives and the lives of others.  His promise give us hope. His power and direction straight from the Father because of Jesus give us life.

We are not only refreshed, but born anew into the spiritual life (John 3:3-6) from here to eternity reinstated into the Kingdom of God for which we are created.  Instead of scavenger’s in a place of death, we become vessels through which the Living Water flows to usher in more life (John 7:38-39). We are no longer in exile, yet remain for the rest of our physical lives in this foreign land (still in the world, but no longer of it) in order to serve as His ambassadors (2  Cor. 5:20) : lamps through whom He shines His Light to illuminate His way (the only Way) to true life and purpose now and forever (Matt. 5:14-15). We become like the moon to the sun, reflecting the Son during the remaining time of prevalent darkness before the full dawn of the Son has come.

God’s promises for us in this regard are found throughout Scripture.  Here are but a few which remind us of who He is and what He does to read and in which to revel. Do not rush through the reading like an assignment but drink them in little by little.  This is His Water of refreshing, which is the Truth of the Word of God. If you take your time, He will overwhelm you with His goodness and fill you up with His joy through His Word (inspired and written by His Spirit) today and everyday until you are overflowing with it!  (If English is not your native language, please look up these Scripture in your own Bible translation and let His Words go deep.)

May God continue to fill you up daily with His Truth and richly bless you! ~ Elizabeth

Isa. 40:10-11,18-31; Isa. 41:4b-3,10-14, 17-20; Isa. 43:1-3a,10-11,18-21; Isa. 44:2-8,21-25 (ESV)

Isa. 40  10  Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.  11 He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young…18 To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him?  19 An idol! A craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and casts for it silver chains. 20 He who is too impoverished for an offering chooses wood that will not rot; he seeks out a skillful craftsman to set up an idol that will not move. 21 Do you not know? Do you not hear? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?  22 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in; 23 who brings princes to nothing, and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness.  24 Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he bows on them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. 25 To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One.  26 Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these?  He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing.  27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God”?  28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.  29 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.  30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; 31 but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Isa. 41 4…I, the LORD, the first and the with the last; I am he. 5 The coastlands have seen and are afraid; the ends of the earth tremble; they have drawn near and come…10 “fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.  11 Behold, all who are incensed against you shall be put to shame and confounded; those who strive against you shall be as nothing and shall perish.  12 You shall seek those who contend with you, but you shall not find them; those who war against you shall be as nothing at all. For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”  14 Fear not…I am the one who helps you, declares the LORD; your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel…17 When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst, I the LORD will answer them; I the God of Israel will not forsake them.  18 I will open rivers on the bare heights, and fountains in the midst of the valleys, I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.  19 I will put in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the olice.  I will set in the desert the cypress, the plane and the pine together, 20 that they may see and know, may consider and understand together that the hand of the LORD has done this, the Holy One of Israel has created it.

Isa 43  1 But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. 2 when you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 3 For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, Your Savior…”  10 “You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.  11 I, I am the LORD, and besides me there is no savior…18 Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old.  19 Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?  I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.  20 The wild beasts will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches, for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.”

Isa 44  2 “Thus says the LORD who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you: Fear not…. 3 For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.  4 They shall spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams. 5 This one will say, ‘I am the LORD’s,’ another will call on the name of Jacob, and another will write on his hand, ‘The Lord’s,’ and name himself by the name of Israel.”  6 Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. 7 Who is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before me, since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen. 8 Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me?  There is no Rock; I know not any.”…21 Remember these things…for you are my servant; I formed you; you are my servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me. 22 I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you. 23 Sing, O heavens, for the LORD has done it; shout, O depths of the earth; break forth into singing, O mountains, O forest, and every tree in it! For the LORD has redeemed Jacob, and will be glorified in Israel.  24 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the LORD, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself, 25 who frustrates the signs of liars and makes fools of diviners, who turns wise men back and makes their knowledge foolish

I am a God-seeker--a Jesus-worshipper--a Holy Spirit follower. I create songs, devotions, prayers, books and Bible studies to give words with which to get to know God more. For you. Its for one-on-One encounter unto transformed, transcendent living. This is not my vocation. I am not professional. I am a real, ordinary person just looking to do what God put me here to do. (You have a unique purpose too.) So I am called to the work. It is not my income source, but my gift to those who find it blessing. Eagles Nest Foundation sponsors all projects for you. The result: pure, clean spiritual nutrition to feed that deep insatiable spiritual hunger which eventually overtakes each of us and galvanizes you to the life God has for you. This life is purposeful. Exceptional. You--yes, you--are called to something greater and more satisfying in His service. So it is hoped you'll try this spiritually dense nutrition and find it to be a personal blessing. However, the goodness of God-following doesn't stop there. He uses those who seek Him to be His love and care (justice, mercy, advocate, kindness) very tangibly in the lives of those around you. Not by your power but by His. His ideas. God ideas. Not just good ideas. To be part of changing the world, if you will let Him. You learn to just follow where He leads. That if you listen, He will teach you to hear His voice and then when you obey His inner promptings you will become His incredible hands and feet in this hard world. These materials will help! They will help you aim your life towards God in a way you never look back. You will not be the same. He will become the River in your desert spaces and you will become a conduit of this same River of refreshing, replenishing Water of Life to others. Find a prayer. Pick a blog post. Read a book. Be led deeper into the Bible. Select a song which resonates and use it and use it again to go close and ever closer to the God who longs to draw you near. Oh, and don't be tempted to think I'm a crazy over-spiritualized loony...My background is financial planning and counseling. Almost 40 years of it. To choose to believe in God is not to leave practicality and reason behind, but to learn that there is that which goes beyond it and includes it, unto true life fulfillment beyond all your dreams for the one who keeps seeking Him. I am a third generation Californian. I am a person to whom family means everything. The only priority higher is God. The foothills of the Sierra Nevada are my home. It is here the 1849-1856 Gold Rush is still glorified. Easy money? Actually only for the few. Even though I was raised in the Church, it took me ten years of doubting God even existed to realize that without Him, no matter how much of this life's "stuff" is accumulated, I actually have nothing. To come to know that all those who chased after gold are dead and all those who still chase stuff will be dead. That's when I became a God-seeker. Looking for that more. And Eureka! (This is California's state slogan and means I found it.) I found God...or rather, I discovered He was there and had been there waiting for me to look for Him the whole time. May you discover more of Him for you, greater flourishing life and greater flourishing for all in the world as well. God bless you! ~Elizabeth
