Lord God, the path upon which You set our feet is not easy. Grief, sorrow and suffering accompany us along the way. In moments like these it seems unbearable and it is as if a unified cry of anguish goes up from the earth.
These are the times, where human wisdom fails us. Life (and death) do not make sense. In times like this where the existence of evil is not far away, but horribly, palpably near our hearts break, for You created us to love and be loved back, not for the violence which seems to have overtaken us.
Yet, if we will stop the whirlwind of in our minds for a moment and pause from our spinning never-ending webs of useless thoughts, which lead us nowhere in our efforts to explain that which is unexplainable in human terms (because that which has occurred is something supernaturally, spiritually evil, played out on the physical field of life and as such, is so contrary to that for which You created us), then we will see You are still here. In all Your majesty and in the face of the unspeakable, You surround us, standing ready at every moment to shower us with Your supernatural, inexplicable, extreme, supreme, incomprehensible comfort and love. Because You are God and so superior to us, often the touch of comfort, love, grace and a little bit of healing comes from unexpected places. Yet by in Your sovereign will, it is there. Often Your love flows softly and oh, so gently through one individual to another. One by one by one as we reach out to one another and let You minister to us through one another: a hug, a glance, a word, a look of understanding, a touch on the arm. And by Your great grace through the power of Your Spirit and the guidance of Your ministering angels, we can pause, notice and receive it.
And through it all You point to Your Son. Jesus – born temporarily homeless, and into a make-shift shelter deemed fit for animals, not humans, yet this was the roof You allowed over His head. . Jesus – mocked, scorned, put down by leaders of His day. Jesus – criticized and plotted against by those who exalted their human wisdom above His way (yet they died and He lives!) Jesus – completely innocent and SON OF GOD whom they murdered – executed – in a manner which today would be considered inhumane, and yet the One who rose showing by His sacrifice eternal life through reconciliation with the Father had been made available once again to all. Jesus – the Master Shepherd, the One who shows us the way of life and is in fact the Way and the Life because He is the Truth.
Oh Lord, You lead us home. Father God, You know the difficulties here and yet You never leave us or forsake us, Your eyes ever on the eternity You have planned for us which will be beyond anything we can imagine.
Lord God, You do not promise life in these physical temporary tents we call “bodies” will be easy, neither do You promise no problems or hardships, but You do promise to get us through. You ask us to rely on You. You ask us to listen to You and simply follow where You lead as Jesus did. You promise what the enemy meant for evil and use it for eventual, eternal good – through the pain and suffering. You want us to know we will need You to make it through our time here. You want us to know You speak to us and make a way where there seems to be none.
No matter what is going on around us, You offer us shelter and comfort under Your eternal, loving, incomprehensible wings in a way which is spiritual, supernatural and beyond what our humanity can grasp. You are always there, always ready to give us what we need in every moment – even the most desperate ones. Your love ever-flowing and Your victory over evil (which seems to win in the short-term) is eternal.
Our inability to understand does not negate the fact that You are. Lord, with each passing day we know more than ever that we are nothing without You. We can make no sense out of all that is happening around us – especially that which is so evil and wrong. And so, Lord, we are relying on You. Choosing to believe in You and seeking to follow You because You are all that we have. In response, we choose to receive Your gift of peace and even joy in all circumstances, because in the end….You win. Let Your love go forth, Lord, in this devastating hour in a myriad of forms which astounds the world and ushers in Your day by day healing. Our eyes are on You. Speak and we will obey. You are our only Savior and Lord. Thus You are our hope…. In Jesus’ name, Amen
