PRAYER When Life Doesn’t Make Sense

Lord Jesus, You are our hope. In You is the Way through suffering & hardship. In You is our future now and forever. Be with us with increase and help our hearts through these difficult days.

Lord God, the path upon which You set our feet is not easy.  Grief, sorrow and suffering accompany us along the way.  In moments like these it seems unbearable and it is as if a unified cry of anguish goes up from the earth.

These are the times, where human wisdom fails us.  Life (and death) do not make sense.  In times like this where the existence of evil is not far away, but horribly, palpably near our hearts break, for You created us to love and be loved back, not for the violence which seems to have overtaken us.

Yet, if we will stop the whirlwind of in our minds for a moment and pause from our spinning never-ending webs of useless thoughts, which lead us nowhere in our efforts to explain that which is unexplainable in human terms (because that which has occurred is something supernaturally, spiritually evil, played out on the physical field of life and as such, is so contrary to that for which You created us), then we will see You are still here.  In all Your majesty and in the face of the unspeakable, You surround us, standing ready at every moment to shower us with Your supernatural, inexplicable, extreme, supreme, incomprehensible comfort and love.   Because You are God and so superior to us, often the touch of comfort, love, grace and a little bit of healing comes from unexpected places.  Yet by in Your sovereign will, it is there.  Often Your love flows softly and oh, so gently through one individual to another.  One by one by one as we reach out to one another and let You minister to us through one another: a hug, a glance, a word, a look of understanding, a touch on the arm.  And by Your great grace through the power of Your Spirit and the guidance of Your ministering angels, we can pause, notice and receive it.

And through it all You point to Your Son.   Jesus – born temporarily homeless, and into a make-shift shelter deemed fit for animals, not humans, yet this was the roof You allowed over His head.  .  Jesus – mocked, scorned, put down by leaders of His day.  Jesus – criticized and plotted against by those who exalted their human wisdom above His way (yet they died and He lives!)  Jesus – completely innocent and SON OF GOD whom they murdered – executed – in a manner which today would be considered inhumane, and yet the One who rose showing by His sacrifice eternal life through reconciliation with the Father had been made available once again to all.  Jesus – the Master Shepherd, the One who shows us the way of life and is in fact the Way and the Life because He is the Truth.

Oh Lord, You lead us home.  Father God, You know the difficulties here and yet You never leave us or forsake us, Your eyes ever on the eternity You have planned for us which will be beyond anything we can imagine.

Lord God, You do not promise life in these physical temporary tents we call “bodies” will be easy, neither do You promise no problems or hardships, but You do promise to get us through.  You ask us to rely on You.  You ask us to listen to You and simply follow where You lead as Jesus did.  You promise what the enemy meant for evil and use it for eventual, eternal good – through the pain and suffering.  You want us to know we will need You to make it through our time here.  You want us to know You speak to us and make a way where there seems to be none.

No matter what is going on around us, You offer us shelter and comfort under Your eternal, loving, incomprehensible wings in a way which is spiritual, supernatural and beyond what our humanity can grasp.  You are always there, always ready to give us what we need in every moment  – even the most desperate ones.  Your love ever-flowing and Your victory over evil (which seems to win in the short-term) is eternal.

Our inability to understand does not negate the fact that You are.  Lord, with each passing day we know more than ever that we are nothing without You.  We can make no sense out of all that is happening around us – especially that which is so evil and wrong.  And so, Lord, we are relying on You.  Choosing to believe in You and seeking to follow You because You are all that we have.  In response, we choose to receive Your gift of peace and even joy in all circumstances, because in the end….You win.  Let Your love go forth, Lord, in this devastating hour in a myriad of forms which astounds the world and ushers in Your day by day healing.  Our eyes are on You. Speak and we will obey.  You are our only Savior and Lord. Thus You are our hope…. In Jesus’ name, Amen

PRAYER in times of senseless death

Lord God, we do not understand.  It does not make sense.  You are such a good God, how can it be that these events such as the shootings of innocent and suicides of the guilty continue to happen.  Lord God, You did not give us life in order for us to kill each other and ourselves!  You ordained our lives to be lived with great purpose according to Your magnificent redeeming plan for humanity.  You sent Your Son Jesus to give us hope that our lives are planned by You, that Your plan is good and extends from here through eternity.  Yes, Lord life is not easy, but You use all, all, all things for good when considered in light of Your eternal good plan.

Lord God, we declare Your Spirit of Truth, Light, Love and LIFE go forth through this land and the world, that there be no more need (or occurence) of these horrific incidences!!!

But now, oh God, in this moment our hearts hurt!!!!  So much senseless death!  Again…..and again…. Help us know how to help this stop!  Lord, it is You we need, for You are the Source of all hope, peace, purpose and life.  Lord God, again we declare, let Your Spirit of Truth, Light, Love and LIFE go forth.  Lord God in this moment we need more of You!

If there is anything each of us could do personally to reach out and help, show us individually what this is.  We are listening and waiting for Your Holy Spirit’s instructions.  And Lord, now, now, now send an increase of Your angels to the families impacted by this – the families of the victims and the family of the one who has inflicted injury on the others.  Lord, You are the Comforter.  In response to our prayers, pour out Your supernatural comfort in ways You know will reach and touch each individual impacted by this in the manner they each need.

For those who have been witness to the evil, in Jesus’ name, we come against a spirit of fear and ask Lord God that You help them not go down into the pit of anxiety, recurring flashbacks, and their own internal destruction, but that You somehow help them to feel safe!

We know safety is in You alone.  We know You are with us from here to eternity.  We know though You allow evil to continue to exist in this world, You send Your angels to gently, lovingly usher those whose lives are ended here by such evil into Your heavenly presence.

Oh Healer of hearts, be about Your work.  Come alongside the grieving, comfort the anxious with an ongoing gush of Your peace which surpasses all understanding.  Help each of us to trust in You with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding.

Lord, our comprehension is so limited…..in all these things we acknowledge You alone are God and we do not understand…we are counting on You to lead us and every person touched by this through it….in a way which has eventual healing….in a way which leads to Your promised eventual good….though there is no way in our humanness we can find anything good in this now.  We are broken before You in our shock and grief!

Lord God, thank You for making us with tender hearts made after Your own image to feel and care.  Now heal these hearts and restore Your peace as only You can for we cry out in anguish!  You promise You will restore….we are relying on You. Lord God, we know that You are all that we have and how glorious to know even in this horrible event You are with all of us and when we look back, though the grief will remain, we will see You got each person through.  You are all we want and all we need.  Defeat the spirit of death, Lord.  Usher in Your Spirit of LIFE to this world.  Be Comforter and supernaturally help all in need…..We will continue to pray…..our trust is in You….. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Contemplating Christmas

Lord, You are the gift and the Giver of all good gifts. There is no greater gift - no greater love. We look to You, bow to You and adore You with all the angels in heaven and those who have gone before.
Lord, You are the gift and the Giver of all good gifts. There is no greater gift – no greater love. We look to You, bow to You and adore You with all the angels in heaven and those who have gone before.

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro (c) 2012

Why do we embrace the season and idea of Christmas like we do, decorating, hosting gathering, wrapping gifts and seeking to pour out love on others?  What is it our spirits yearn for as this time of year approaches?  The surface story prompting the celebration is simple and not especially beautiful.  A husband and wife are mandated by an unfriendly and oppressive government forcibly occupying their land, to make a journey to be counted. This meant the man – a carpenter by trade and by no means wealthy (probably living on income generated project by project) – will not be able to work and earn for the duration of the mandated journey.  And the woman is heavy with child in the thick of the discomfort and weariness of the final trimester of pregnancy.

They arrive after days of travel at their prescribed destination, but all the places where travelers could stay are full.  His wife is now in labor. The birth of the child is imminent.  With no clean place to stay or midwife to assist, she gives birth to her son among the filth of a completely unsanitary environment within a stable or cave (dependent upon the account).  Without anything with her to provide for Him, but swaddling clothes, she lays Him in an animal feed trough as a make-shift crib. There is nothing romantic about the Savior of the world being born according to God’s perfect plan into poverty and lack, unnoticed by the majority of those for whom He left His heavenly throne.

No, the beauty of Christmas is not the surface story.  The magnificence and appeal of Christmas is the hope which this story represents.  This baby is Jesus, whose name means God saves. This baby is Jesus, prophesied as the coming Messiah to deliver and save His people.

Few even knew He was born, yet He was this One, whom God sent.  And as became apparent after His heinous death (which in the moment seemed to wipe out any hope of Him fulfilling what He came to do), we learned His destiny was different than we thought and more wonderful than anyone could have imagined.  Jesus did not leave his eternal throne in heaven to be born, live and die as a criminal though innocent to free one nation on earth from oppression of another, leaving us condemned to a difficult existence here which would end in eternal death and continued separation from God.  Jesus humbled Himself, left His throne, gave up His will for the will of the Father, obeyed letting the people less than He execute Him, so that all those from every nation who so chose could be free from the curse of eternal separation from God and be reunited into His heavenly presence forever.

We need to pause, contemplate and grasp this for a moment. The God who created the universe, who decided how all should be, loves us so much He created us to be with Him.  Even after our ancestors set the tone by rejecting Him and choosing their own way, His love prevails. Through Jesus He made a way for us to be reunited into His goodness.  Forever.

Each of us was born with a need to be valued and loved. God values us and loves us perfectly, completely, infinitely and unconditionally.  The question is whether we will choose to love Him back.  Because Jesus humbled himself and walked out the not-easy life the Father laid out before Him (which did not lead to earthly riches, power or fame, but led to the cross, humiliation, rejection, condemnation, mocking and scorning by the world’s people and leaders, we have the hope of an eternity in His presence so good and fulfilling it defies description utilizing mere human forms of expression.

This is the joy of Christmas – the prostrate thanksgiving to God in the increasing awareness that He loves us this much. The spirit of Christmas attempts to re-create this sacrificial giving of self for the sake of others through gifts, hospitality and festive celebrations. Yet, we cannot out-give the Giver.

Oh, come!  Let us adore Him!

NOTE from Elizabeth: Please consider acquiring CHRISTMAS WORSHIP for your own music collection. Jesus wants to be worshipped at all times. Will you consider worshipping with me?  A few years ago, the Lord whispered to my heart that He wanted to be worshipped at Christmas and He showed me how many of the songs we sing beautifully tell the story of His birth and why He came, but very few actually worship Him during this festive season.  As a result, CHRISTMAS WORSHIP was created.  It is a unique worship CD which includes includes 7 new, original Christmas worship songs, which the Lord had me compose specifically for this project. It can be purchased at www.holyspiritpress.org or amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Worship-Elizabeth-Fulgaro/dp/B004D9931G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1320069144&sr=8-2 or itunes or CDbaby.com http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/elizabethfulgaro3.   The entire songs, “Not My Will But Yours”, “Heaven’s King” and “We Seek You” can be listened to on my FaceBook Musicians page in the MusicStore at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Elizabeth-Fulgaro/14919192923?ref=ts&sk=app_155326481208883 “You Came to Set Us Free” is on Youtube at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJemQQSTcyk  (Music clips for all songs are available at CD Baby or amazon.com links). May God receive the honor and worship He is due this Christmas season and throughout the coming year!

Prayer Welcoming God’s Plan for the Moment

Holy God, we praise Your name.  Your names each write bits of who You are on our hearts, that we might stand strong and attached to You, our Rock, for the Truth of who You are builds our “house” on solid ground which cannot be rocked by anything this world dishes out.  Lord God, despite all secular wisdom says needs to be done today, You alone truly have the plan for our lives.  Lord God, we are quieting our minds, pushing out all the cobwebs of lists, anxieties and confusion because Your will is what we want.  We consciously lay down our agendas and seek Yours.  How blessed we are to not have to come up with our own good ideas, but to be able to be at simply follow You!  How blessed we are that if we ask and seek it, You will teach us to hear Your voice, so we can follow where Your Spirit leads.

Oh Lord, we know You do not promise to only lead us along easy paths. This remains earth, not heaven and we are honored to serve as Your ambassadors – lamps to shine Your light of truth, mercy, grace and abounding, everlasting love – wherever You decide to send us.  Lord, it is during these more difficult times, that we rely on You alone, which makes what could be ugly times, some of the most beautiful of all.  Lord, You are trustworthy.  We can lean on You and You will never fail us.

Lord God, we bring You all our burdens today and lay them at Your feet, choosing to neither fear, be anxious or worry because You promise to take care of all our needs – knowing our needs even better than we know them ourselves.  Lord God, in the midst of life’s storms, we choose to rest in You and pause this moment, not only to listen for Your next step, but to rejoice than You are.

Thank You again that we do not have to worry or fear because You are all-powerful, sovereign, faithful, all-knowing and use all things for good in light of eternity. Thank You that You love the ones we love and the ones we struggle to love more than we can every imagine. Thank You, that You forgive each one of our indiscretions which have been offensive to You and would put a wedge between us (because You cannot be near anything which is not as perfect as You are) through the blood Jesus shed on the cross.  Thank You that we do not have to know the future and do not have to know even what tomorrow will bring because of who You are.  And so, Lord, give us the work of our hands for the moment – just for today and we will rejoice in it because of You, delight ourselves in You and Your promises and live resting in the shadow of Your ever-loving wings. In Jesus’ name, Amen
