Prayer for PATRIOTS DAY ~ September 11, 2012

LORD, we need You – Your direction, Your Spirit, Your Living Water to refresh us and Your Truth to sustain us. So often there is so much which makes no sense, because we are mere humans (the created, while You are the Creator) and so we cling to You trusting as You ask us to. We know You will not fail to guide us through these times as in every time before. And so we praise Your name in all circumstances and ask for Your blessing. Thank You, that You are God. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Holy God, we praise Your name.  To You alone do we turn. We will never forget those who gave their lives on September 11, 2001 and since.  We will never forget their loved ones.  We will never forget the heinous, murdering attacks on the USA, which woke us up to realize that we could no longer live ignorant to the threat of radical Islam.  They wanted to kill us and the rules of engagement were not honorable.  They would stop at nothing to hurt, kill and destroy.  To some extent we grew up a little that day eleven years ago….and Lord, it has changed us.  Our active participation seeking to prevent further attacks through an offensive strategy in the War on Terror is part of this.

So many young men and women have given their lives to protect us since.  Lord, today, please continue to wrap Your arms around all the families who continue to suffer because of the attacks on 09/11/2001 (both from the actual attacks and the battles since).  Continue to be Comforter to all those who loved and lost and Healer to those who have been injured. Lord, there is no timeframe on processing a loss. The loss remains and therefore, there will be a hole which can never be filled left by the one who passed.  Grief will remain more or less for the rest of a lifetime for the one who is grieving.

Yet in all this we cling to Your promises.   You cannot lie, therefore Your promises must go into fulfillment. They must.  You are Truth.  You can neither lie, nor fail to fulfill a promise.  You waste nothing and what the enemy means for evil You promise to use for good in light of eternity – always….eventually….always.  Lord, continue to direct these loved ones.  Give them Your courage and comfort on hard days and may Your strength and peace be their ongoing companion.  Continue to encourage these survivors to look for Your plan.  Lord God, in time, we wait on You to supply good purpose to their lives (and we thank You already for the good purpose You have given some of the survivors) and in time eventually by Your grace there might even be a new joy along with the grief which finds its source of strength in You.  Help each survivor to gain Your perspective to help them through each day, making their way step by step until at Your appointed time You call us home to be reunited with You and those who have gone before.

Lord, we ask You to protect our troops and their families – those still fighting, those who have returned home and are now veterans, recovering wounded and those between deployments.  Lord God, they need Your strength, wisdom, courage, love, mercy and knowledge of forgiveness.   They give so much for us. Sustain and cover them under the shelter of Your wings as only You can.  (Only You are stronger than every adversary!)

Lord God, we also ask for You to send forth an increase of Your Spirit into the hardened Islamic atmosphere and touch hearts as only You can do.  Reveal Yourself to those who hate and help them to see the beauty and freedom in Your Way of love.  There would be no war, if hate would cease.  Hate is not from You.  We know there is peace in heaven and we come before You bowed in reverential awe with a desire to see the ways of heaven invade earth.  Idealistic, yes.  But, oh God how we can hope and pray and rejoice in each small bit of progress. For we know who You are, we know how You love all and died for all, and so we join You in prayer – not for just the few, but for every single person.

Lord God, we also remember how all the heroes of September 11th and all the military heroes since have shown us Your path.  Lord God, these were ordinary people like us, who suddenly found themselves in position to need to do the extraordinary.  And they have done it – with Your angels by their side.

In turn, help us to embrace the work You set before us this day with the same zeal.  May we honor You by the heart with which we do the work of our hands.  May we honor their memory by remembering every person, and every effort matters. All are contributors to Your whole, who seek to do Your will.

Lord God, help the USA to stay awake and vigilant – not just to the dangers abroad, but to the dangers at home.  We need You in our midst, and over us as Lord (and King)!  Help Christians understand that we are protected and provided for according to the promises of God, when we give up our right to self and bow to You as the authority in our lives, actively seeking to discern Your will.  Your promise if we will seek and listen, You will teach us to hear Your voice. Speak Lord, Your servants are listening. Remembering the heroes of 9/11 and the incomprehensible sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus, we re-commit and offer our lives once again to You for Your purposes – as family members, neighbors, and citizens, etc.

Lord God, our will is nothing.  Yours is all we want.  Lord God, You laid down Your life for us.  Like the heroes from 9/11 and the War on Terror battles since, we are ready to lay our lives down for the sake of others as well.  We are ready to do Your will! We have no life outside of You.  We have no goals which are better than Yours.  We have learned our plans are not as good as Yours. And so Lord, with the memory of what these heroes have given, we re-commit our lives to Your service, for You to use as You deem fit, that as many as possible might have opportunity to get to know You and choose You as Savior and Lord for eternity, that death might not be the end, but eternity in Your presence be in our grasp (and therewith Your Great Commission fulfilled).  Lord, bless all the families and loved ones.  Lord, bless us in our work for You until You call us home.  Lord, guide and direct us. We seek only You.  In Jesus’ name, Amen
