11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. (Eph. 1:11-12 NIV)
In the meadows, on hilltops, under the cover of trees, beside streams – few see the wildflowers growing, flourishing and unfurling their budded petals into blossoms declaring the glory of God. Often their exquisite beauty goes completely unnoticed, yet they have great God-purpose.
The wildflowers may be here for but a season, yet in that season – however brief – through their very existence they faithfully proclaim, “All is well; the Creator is with us! He reigns and His eternal plans and good purposes will not be thwarted! (They cannot be thwarted, for He is Lord.)”
It does not matter who sees. It is done because it is right, good and God’s purpose for these wildflowers to be simply as they are and declare “He is!” for whatever season He ordains.
The flowers rise up from the soil in which they were planted by the Creator’s grand design. They bloom; too soon it seems they wilt; they dry into whisps as they are emptied of their seeds. Their season is done.
The Lord, in turn, prepares the soil with storms in winter for the next spring and the next generation of wildflowers, which in turn will do their part to declare Him (whether any person sees or not). Thus through the seasons there is a perpetual display of the glory of our God, which is done purely for God in order to honor Him, His power, sovereignty and majesty. It is part of the ongoing relationship between the Creator and created: life continues displaying the wonder of His creation, which simultaneously honors Him for the Truth of who He is.
Too often we are tempted to measure success by visibility within our communities or accolades from others. Yet our purpose is simply to declare His glory where we are. We were made for the praise of His glory. So simple. So good. So right. Because He is worthy….and His unending, infinite love and care reverbrates ongoing back to us in return.
23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. (Col. 3:22-23 NIV)
Selah! [Pause and calmly think of that!]
