Once we have come face to face with God, understanding His place in our lives, we find our hearts exploding with love and gratitude for who He is and what He does. We want to go out and tell everyone we know about Jesus, about His secret to life, about the Ultimate Treasure we have found. We want to live for Him. We want to do for Him. We want to serve Him with all our heart, mind and body. And all this is good.
Yet, we cannot serve Christ if we do not love and we cannot love unless we are putting ourselves in a position where Christ can teach about Himself and change our hearts, flowing His Spirit and love through us His Way.
In our fervor to share Jesus we must not forget Jesus Himself. The focus of faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord isn’t the acts of service, but love and worship. It is about the personal relationship where we continue to seek to know Him better because in Him is all that we want and all that we need. His heart grows deeper into ours and ours into His.
This is the beauty of abiding to which He beckons us. It is in fact one of His deepest desires for us. God is inviting us to be with Him in a manner which reflects the same relationship He has in the Father and the Father has in Him. He is inviting us to intimacy.
Imagine what it would be like for a moment to be listening for God’s every whisper as He listens for ours. Imagine becoming more and more like Christ who is our example, and dwells in the Father as the Father in Him and who is so closely partnered with the Father that He only does as the Father is doing. The Son does not proceed with any of His own ideas, but only executes those which are the heart of God exactly as Father God leads Him. This is Jesus!
At initial glance this may look stifling to us. Where is the room for our own ideas?
Consider this another way. The one, true and only God who created the universe, who has no beginning or end and has always been, who is completely supernatural and beyond comprehension wants to partner with us to accomplish His purposes. When we truly believe He is who He says, we willingly let His ideas become our ideas. We want His!
He is perfect; we are not. He is powerful; we are not. He is love; we are not. He has vision & strategy which is above all; we do not. Why would we want anything besides His plan when His is the only one which will work and consistently produces good results with eternal consequences.?
We should drop to our knees, bow our heads in reverence as we recognize God as Supreme, Almighty God. Hands over our hearts, desiring to be knights in His army under Him, we should pledge our allegiance and lives to the Most High, always-Victor, Sovereign, General and declare, “My Lord and my God!”
And yet, abiding – living in His heart with Him in ours, so we can hear the whispers of His heart and be able to follow, partnering with the Father like Jesus – has the pre-requisite of spending time with Him. This is alone time and not necessarily time worshipping Him with others (though God is well pleased when we worship together).
God created us as individuals. As individuals we are born; as individuals we will die and as individuals we will face the realities (and choices) of relationship with Him.
No one can develop our relationship with Him for us and we can not effectively serve the One whom we now love if the foundation is not worship. Authentic worship recounts to Him all that He is and all that He does. We cannot worship Him if we do not know Him, or if we are not still enough to listen to His voice and let Him lead us in what He would like to reveal to us about Himself through His word to those around us.
It is not just faith He is God (even the demons believe He is God), but a relationship where we constantly seek to know Him better. And as we spend private time with Him (choosing to invest time it would seem we would need for so many other things), He softens our hearts. And as we gaze undistracted at Him further, He changes our heart, causing us day by day to become more and more like Him. As we grow into His heart and He into ours, He sends us on assignments as His ambassador. In these we find great fulfillment, for we are serving our beloved King.
But we must not forget, the assignments are never more important than our individual relationship with God Himself and the ongoing seeking of Him which of necessity accompanies this relationship. For in Him is Life.
JOHN 15:4-11 (Amplified)
4Dwell in Me, and I will dwell in you. [Live in Me, and I will live in you.] Just as no branch can bear fruit of itself without abiding in (being vitally united to) the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in Me.
5I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.
6If a person does not dwell in Me, he is thrown out like a [broken-off] branch, and withers; such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and they are burned.
7If you live in Me [abide vitally united to Me] and My words remain in you and continue to live in your hearts, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you.
8When you bear (produce) much fruit, My Father is honored and glorified, and you show and prove yourselves to be true followers of Mine.
9I have loved you, [just] as the Father has loved Me; abide in My love [[a]continue in His love with Me].
10If you keep My commandments [if you continue to obey My instructions], you will abide in My love and live on in it, just as I have obeyed My Father’s commandments and live on in His love.
11I have told you these things, that My joy and delight may be in you, and that your joy and gladness may be of full measure and complete and overflowing.
Selah! [Pause, and calmly think of that!]
