When our time in these physical bodies is done, the earth will go on as it is until Jesus comes again. The mountains in the distance, the streams which flow through the valleys, the sky with clouds moving across it, the rising sun, the waning moon and all the stars in the heavens, which we experience today are in large part the same as those experienced by the generations who lived 100, 200, 500 or even 5,000 years ago.
And…no matter what men and women exalt as their own personal “truth” during their brief lifetimes, it will die with them, unless it matches the only actual Truth: God’s. For we have never had the power to change what God has ordained to be.
What are we to make of this? Of what relevance to us is this truth – this nugget of God’s way? It reminds us that it is Lord who is God, not us. In fact, we are passing away. It reminds us that we are here for but a moment, echoing the Scriptures that we are as grass – seemingly newly sprouted in the morning, but burnt and wasted away when the hot sun shines down on it. Now what are we going to do with the time that we have?
We are faced with the choice of trying to make our short lives worthwhile on our own using our own ideas or becoming an active part of God’s plan for eternity. If He is real (and if we call ourselves Christian then obviously we believe He is), then why would we want anything besides God’s will? (It has to be better than ours…)
What an amazing, incomprehensible honor and privilege that the God of the universe, the Creator of all things, the all-powerful, everlastin Living One, asks us to partner with Him for His purposes. We should be in awe. We should be clammering to be near Him every moment of every day. We should be obsessed with Him beyond any human hero. We should dote on every word He has written and speaks, doing everything possible to be near Him at all times in order to perhaps touch the hem of His garment or perhaps be touched by Him.
When we search for meaning He is the answer. He wants to use each of us wherever we are through whom to shine His love and make His presence real to the world. What a mighty God we serve!
PSALM 103:13-18 (NIV)
13 As a father has compassion on his children,
so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;
14 for he knows how we are formed,
he remembers that we are dust.
15 The life of mortals is like grass,
they flourish like a flower of the field;
16 the wind blows over it and it is gone,
and its place remembers it no more.
17 But from everlasting to everlasting
the LORD’s love is with those who fear him,
and his righteousness with their children’s children—
18 with those who keep his covenant
and remember to obey his precepts.
EPH. 1:11-12 (NIV)
11 In him we were also chosen,having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.
JER. 33:2-3 (NIV)
2 “This is what the LORD says, he who made the earth, the LORD who formed it and established it—the LORD is his name: 3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’
Selah! [Pause, and calmly think of that!]
