We all are subject to interior battles, which are emotional and spiritual in nature. Sometimes they are influenced by physical factors which must be addressed as well. Where there is a spiritual root, we need to be aware that the power of the negativity we face is supernatural and beyond what we can beat on our own (because we are natural, not supernatural). But we have a secret weapon, which when wielded always brings eventual victory: The Word of God. And we have the Almighty One True God always by our side. Truly the enemy has no power and can only threaten, lie and accuse, but not conquer when we invite God to be with us as LORD.
But the focus on this post is on the secret weapon which God has made always available to us, because He is aware of all battles we face. In the selection of verses which follow, God describes the enemy we face and how He equips us for victory. This is the first in a series of posts, which will periodically present verses from the Word of God which can be wielded effectively as a sword to cut off the negative lies which can and will come against our minds from the adversary and his henchmen. Today with the following Scripture passage we lay the foundation of why we need to constantly refresh our minds with these verses and come to know them so well that they are so-to-speak, as if engraved on our palms and written on our hearts.
ARMOR OF GOD – “10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” EPHESIANS 6:10-18
Either God as described in the Bible is real or He is not. If we believe He is real (which is a pre-requisite to faith), then He is Truth because this is how He describes Himself to be. If God is not Truth (as He describes), then He is a liar and nothing about Him can be trusted. Since our faith requires us to believe He is who He says, then He is Truth and therefore we can fully rely on what He says.
God is also unchanging. He does not grow and mature as we do. He is. (I AM!) He has always been and will always be the same. Therefore how He was in the Bible is how we can expect Him to be. What He promised then is His promise to us now. We can count on it.
In Eph 6:17 (above) God describes the Word of God as the SWORD of the Spirit of God. Take a look at the rest of the wonderful armor described in these verses with which He equips us to stand firm against the enemy’s schemes. The Word of God is the ONLY offensive weapon in the armor. All the rest help protect us, but the Word of God pushes back the enemy and defeats. Remember, even Jesus used the Word of God to defeat the enemies mental schemes. During His 40 days in the desert following His baptism and preceding His public ministry, the devil came to Jesus and misquoted/misrepresented the true meaning of the Word of God. As he is expert at doing, the adversary just tweeked and twisted the meaning a little, but that little bit changed everything! But because Jesus KNEW the Word of God (as a good Jewish boy, He had been schooled in it and as the Son of God, He WAS the Word made flesh), He was able to recognize the enemy’s schemes and fight back, defeating him in that battle.
He invites us to do the same. Moving forward, watch for Spiritual Ammo posts. These will be select powerful passages for you to consider using when you need to wield His sword! These are not the ONLY powerful passages of Scripture. Dig in and find your own favorites. The Word of God is of infinite depth! You will never be done finding new treasures within it!
Remember: 3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Cor. 10:3-5 NIV)
