Keep Climbing

by Elizabeth Burgard Fulgaro (c) 2011

The victory of  the cross was at the top of the hill.  Jesus could have been crucified on flat land (it would have made it a lot easier to carry the cross).  But God ordained Him to carry His cross – broken as He was – to the mountaintop.

In the Old Testament before the temple in Jerusalem was built, it was to the mountaintop
God called His people to come to worship Him.  It is where His Presence rested.

Was this because the top of the mountain was somehow a better place to worship or because God couldn’t manifest intimately anywhere else?

Certainly not, for we know God is omni-present in all places at the same time.  Then why did He call them to climb up to worship?  Why did He ordain Jesus to climb up to die for His victory over death.

We may never know definitively until we can ask God face to face in heaven.   Certainly His ways are far beyond our understanding precisely because He is God.

But could it be specifically because of the climb?  God loves all of us, but comes most intimately with favor, protection and provision, strategy to those who seek Him, who pursue relationship with Him and do not let any obstacle stop them from seeking more.  Is it because He knows in the climb we will develop the spiritual muscle needed to stand for Him in the battles to come for our battles at their root are not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual powers of darkness in the heavenly realms?

‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’  Jer. 33:3 (NIV)

‘For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.’  Eph. 6:12 (NIV)

So don’t stop climbing.  Persevere.  Know whatever your present difficulties He is with you and if you don’t quit you will be blessed beyond measure at the increased overview and closeness to Him you will receive at each new outlook point along the journey  on your way to the summit.     Wherever the path takes you, no matter how many monotonous,  seemingly meaningless, unexpected switch-backs , remember He does everything with purpose; He is with you; He leads. He will never leave you or forsake you and promises to use all things for good when you look back and consider them in light of eternity (and His plans of restoration of the world).   Our God is Truth.  He cannot lie.  Keep going!

I am a God-seeker--a Jesus-worshipper--a Holy Spirit follower. I create songs, devotions, prayers, books and Bible studies to give words with which to get to know God more. For you. Its for one-on-One encounter unto transformed, transcendent living. This is not my vocation. I am not professional. I am a real, ordinary person just looking to do what God put me here to do. (You have a unique purpose too.) So I am called to the work. It is not my income source, but my gift to those who find it blessing. Eagles Nest Foundation sponsors all projects for you. The result: pure, clean spiritual nutrition to feed that deep insatiable spiritual hunger which eventually overtakes each of us and galvanizes you to the life God has for you. This life is purposeful. Exceptional. You--yes, you--are called to something greater and more satisfying in His service. So it is hoped you'll try this spiritually dense nutrition and find it to be a personal blessing. However, the goodness of God-following doesn't stop there. He uses those who seek Him to be His love and care (justice, mercy, advocate, kindness) very tangibly in the lives of those around you. Not by your power but by His. His ideas. God ideas. Not just good ideas. To be part of changing the world, if you will let Him. You learn to just follow where He leads. That if you listen, He will teach you to hear His voice and then when you obey His inner promptings you will become His incredible hands and feet in this hard world. These materials will help! They will help you aim your life towards God in a way you never look back. You will not be the same. He will become the River in your desert spaces and you will become a conduit of this same River of refreshing, replenishing Water of Life to others. Find a prayer. Pick a blog post. Read a book. Be led deeper into the Bible. Select a song which resonates and use it and use it again to go close and ever closer to the God who longs to draw you near. Oh, and don't be tempted to think I'm a crazy over-spiritualized loony...My background is financial planning and counseling. Almost 40 years of it. To choose to believe in God is not to leave practicality and reason behind, but to learn that there is that which goes beyond it and includes it, unto true life fulfillment beyond all your dreams for the one who keeps seeking Him. I am a third generation Californian. I am a person to whom family means everything. The only priority higher is God. The foothills of the Sierra Nevada are my home. It is here the 1849-1856 Gold Rush is still glorified. Easy money? Actually only for the few. Even though I was raised in the Church, it took me ten years of doubting God even existed to realize that without Him, no matter how much of this life's "stuff" is accumulated, I actually have nothing. To come to know that all those who chased after gold are dead and all those who still chase stuff will be dead. That's when I became a God-seeker. Looking for that more. And Eureka! (This is California's state slogan and means I found it.) I found God...or rather, I discovered He was there and had been there waiting for me to look for Him the whole time. May you discover more of Him for you, greater flourishing life and greater flourishing for all in the world as well. God bless you! ~Elizabeth

  1. I’m confident that my name and situation resonated in your heart as you penned this, Elizabeth. A tender and revelatory glimpse at earthly struggle and an admonition to persevere is what all of us need,, for we live in this seen world, albeit we are to call Heaven and the goodness and glory of Heaven onto the Earth whereby the seen fades in our understanding as we rejoice in what God is doing in the unseen dimensions.

I think of how Jesus allowed himself to be bound by the Roman soldiers and Pointius Pilate – the authority of the day – before he walked the way of suffering – the Via Dolorosa. Imagine it: the CREATOR of the UNIVERSE, bound! Hah! They had no clue. (WE have no clue… .)

He did not answer his accusers (Satan’s beguiled), for he himself is not an accuser – even to us who sin. Of course, it was a fulfillment of Jewish Law (sacrifice like Abraham and Isaac), but a greater lesson for us, is that he released us from bondage… and set us free from our captives (yes; even our minds held captive by lies from our enemy); and also to show us that we can be willingly “bound to him” (Paul called himself a bond-servant/slave), but that that very thing gives us freedom and liberty.

Such oxymorons and yet, such truth. We often feel “bound” to our circumstances… as you so well put it:
“Know whatever your present difficulties He is with you and if you don’t quit you will be blessed beyond measure at the increased overview and closeness to Him you will receive at each new outlook point along the journey on your way to the summit. Wherever the path takes you, no matter how many monotonous, seemingly meaningless, unexpected switch-backs , remember He does everything with purpose; He is with you; He leads. He will never leave you or forsake you and promises to use all things for good when you look back and consider them in light of eternity (and His plans of restoration of the world).”

How remarkable that Jesus died! He said no one could take his life from him. He laid it down of his own accord: “I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

If we only had greater understanding… plumbed for it… so that we would unlock some of the mysteries of this life. Walking with Christ is not a cookie-cutter life. Yes; there is MUCH we do not understand. May His grace fill my soul until I have the understanding. May I walk in surrender to Him until I have the understanding. May I be “okay” even when I don’t have the understanding, and live to the praise of His glory BECAUSE, not despite my lack of understanding.

You are a treasure, Elizabeth. Thank you for sharing these nuggets of truth.

    1. Dear Liza,
What a beautiful, true response. You have written a comment which is worthy to be printed as its own reflection or devotion. Dear sister, as you know, God is with you and I stand with you – actually bow with you before our magnificent, inscrutable King and declare in one accord: “May His grace fill our souls until we have understanding. May we walk in surrender to Him until we have the understanding. May we be ‘okay’ even when we don’t have the understanding, and live to the praise of His glory BECAUSE, not despite our lack of understanding.”
Liza, I thank God for you and that you continue to write. He will give you the right words (His words) to minister to many. GOD, PLEASE BLESS LIZA!

  2. He did, Elizabeth – just now – through your life… your heart… your compassion and empathy… the time you spent to reach out and touch me. Thank you for your faithfulness and your en-couragement to your sister in Christ, AND so many others. May God increase your anointing and your sphere of influence. May you have fresh vision & vigor as you validate the glorious message we have received. ❤
